I think the sword + gun style is regarded as the best, but personally I just use the sword for most of the game, it feels so much better that way and more fun. Also, upgrade swords when you can.

Just know, 1's gameplay is really rough. Not in terms of difficulty, just really clunky in general. But every other game's gameplay is pretty good, and that keeps getting better as the series goes on.
Also 2-4 all have recap options for all the prior games in the series up to that point, so you can always watch those in-game to catch up on any story or characters in general.
