I never go into these game with a route to take. I always accept the one that my natural choices give me. That being said I landed on neutral my first go. It was a long time before I finished it cause of all the side quests I had to do. But well worth it.

I got chaos on my first playthrough, I tried to go neutral after killing King Kenji but I was too far into chaos by then for a single law choice to balance out into neutral.
Started a new playthrough a while ago, kind of stopped playing shortly after reaching Tokyo. I've been thinking of getting back into it but at this point it might be better to wait for Apocalypse
Just started Strange Journey though, that should keep me going for a while. I had tried SJ as my first SMT months ago after getting into Persona 3, but was initially turned off by the first-person dungeon crawling and had stopped before even reaching the first boss. STR only affects regular attacks which is pretty useless since you'll be wanting to use either physical or magical abilities during battles. Invest heavily in DEX or INT based on which you prefer. Stick a couple of points in other stats every so often.
You WILL die a lot early on. Don't worry. Until you build up a full team of demons early battles will be tough. Don't be discouraged.

Nocturne is actually very much an odd one out in the series, it's very different in tone and setting to most megaten games. It's a lot less sci-fi and has a much more unique feeling to it than the others. It's hard to describe but even though I hate the dungeons in Nocturne I find myself drawn to it for other reasons.

It'll still whoop your ass even on normal. Nocturne is brutal. It can be pretty frustrating, especially with mudo and hama skills. Still, if you like the setting, go for it.
Just remember that fiends (skeletons with candelabra) are completely optional (unless you're going for the True Demon Ending) and you can just avoid them by choosing "No" when the candelabrum starts flickering, and sometimes you don't even have to go to where they're encountered to advance the plot. I made the mistake of not realising this until after I had died to Daisoujou about twenty times.

You're not wrong, but that completely drains any sense of playing a character out of it. "I need to be a dick to this lady who just wants to see another human face before she dies, because I gained too many law points on that last sidequest / by following the plot" fucks any sense of immersion I could have. And once I lose that seense of being invested in the characters and the choices, there's really no point except fusing better demons to get bigger numbers.
It's the same issue Mass Effect had: there aren't really any neutral choices, just switching between Law and Chaos like a frenetic schizophrenic.
By contrast, Devil Survivor's choice system felt really good, and never had the "now you're got to make this choice that doesn't make much sense, just so you can get your alignment right".

I think the game directly addresses that by having Stephen say that your choices had to fit a bizarre pattern that the first hero made, but I see you point. When I did neutral I had already played my natural instincts and gotten law and then purposefully went chaos before making a specific plan for neutral so i didnt really care much for immersion

Yeah, prettymuch. i think there are some dialogue choices and stuff in the battles that make differences too.
It's not complicated, but I like the fact that you obvious pursue certain characters' stories, and have to try to juggle who you really want to save/see succeed once some of them start turning on each other.
It feels a lot more honest because of the simplicity. You know if you go for a Haru event that you're going to get closer to saving her, or get more of her story, that kind of thing. You don't have to deliberately alternate choices to try and hit some small middle ground - even the characters with routes that interlock at least give some hint they're related.
