NISA is in full damage control on their Criminal Girls 2 forum, after PQube announced Gal*Gun and Valkyrie Drive will be coming to the US uncensored. http://archive.is/qB1gL

>With all of my experience from this job and NISA, I can say with confidence that if we were releasing Senran Kagura or GalGun or Valkyrie Drive, we would not be "censoring" any of that content. Do not fall into the trap of making 1 to 1 comparisons of games, because the ESRB sure doesn't.

I don't know either games. Do they have content as racy as Criminal girls or are they just talking about out their ass?

All I know about Gal*Gun is it's a rail shooter starring schoolgirls and is lewd as fuck.

Valkyrie Drive is about girls that turn into weapons once they're turned on enough. They're paired with other girls that have the ability to arouse and wield them.

NISA couldn't handle spanking, but thinks they could bring that over unedited.
>>
>>344700878
Valkyrie Drive, the anime, was about making girls turn into weapons by fingering them and showed nipples and prompted the /a/ rule change to allow nudity if it's from the actual show, so assumingly the game has a similar concept.
>>
>>344700656
what a load of shit, they would have censored things they saw as problematic anyway. I am so glad there are still some companies out there who actually understand their customers unlike these other companies that think they are being progressive by catering to people who wouldn't buy their games whether they were censored or not.
>>
>>344701227
Uh, nudity from non-h sources has been allowed on /a/ for much longer than Valkyrie Drive.
>>
>>344701227
Sure, but since the game is available on Japanese consoles, you'll know there are no nipples in the actual game. Sony is very strict on that point. No female nipples, no vagina, no penis, but everything else is fair game. Girl hogtied upside down completely naked except for some small ropes covering her nips and cha cha? All fine and dandy.

But NISA would feel the need to censor that because they would call it "sexual abuse". Nevermind that the whole point of Criminal Girls is punishing girls that ended up in hell for their misdeeds in life. Of course they changed that, too. It's not "punish" it is "motivate".
>>
>>344701616
Well, Valk Drive threads were getting deleted and then a mod posted saying they would permitted, so something changed.
>>
>>344700656

I don't really get this trend of people applauding for getting the games censored.
>I would never play this if it wasn't for this based publisher who cut all this foul content and fixed Japan's cultural errors.
What really gets me, is why people actively look for games that have sexual content pruned from them instead of taking interest in things that were vanilla in the first place.

Spike Chunsoft directly controls the Pc releases of the games. I assume they have ownership of all translated content (audio, and text) and then publish directly since digital distribution is far easier than physical.
>>
>>344700656
You guys are looking at this wrong. They might not have needed to censor it. But It was on the table long enough that they could have gotten it if they wanted. The fact is they didn't want to even put their name on a game like this, they think it's not worth their time. Fuck NISA.

At least in this particular case they aren't holding a good game "hostage".
It really rubbed me the wrong way when I heard opinions that all the changes made during Fates localization actually boosted the sales as opposed to majority of buyers simply not knowing any better and the rest just clenching their teeth and taking the bullet because they wanted to play it regardless.
>>
>>344706615
Because every game has to appeal to them. They want games catered to them and not someone else, and finding a game that they might like but has stuff in it they dislike results in them wanting that stuff removed.

Even if they weren't lying, if they actually sent the game into ESRB uncensored and got turned down at least they'd have something legitimate to fall back on. Not just "in informal emails they told us it might be a problem so we changed it". Its claimed that submitting to ESRB multiple times is expensive, but sending the game into ESRB uncensored is the absolute minimum any company should do when bringing a game to the West. If they don't want to risk paying more than once they shouldn't bother bringing it over at all.
>>
>>344708589
ESRB says shit like "this could be an issue" in a non formal just a piece of advice. And nisa takes it as gospel. If they just sent their shit in they'd see it's M.
>>

Companies do this all the time. If you're localizing a risque game, you can ask them what kind of rating certain content might get you before you have the title done for submission, then you can adjust things based upon that feedback.

IFI is still slower than NISA. This year alone, NISA has released
>Disgaea PC
>htol#NiQ: The Firefly Diary
>Stranger of Sword City
And are soon to release
>Phantom Brave PC
>Criminal Girls PC
>Yomawari: Night Alone
This year, IFI has released:
>Hyperdimension Neptunia U
>Hyperdevoition Noire: Goddess Black Heart
>Megadimension Neptunia VII
with the only upcoming announced game being
>Monster Monpiece
Its also worth noting that with Yomawari: Night Alone, NISA is already releasing games at the same time as their console releases, which IFI has yet to do.
>>
What's even keeping them in business? They haven't got Disgaea games coming every day to keep them afloat and most of the titles they localize today anyway just look like bottom of the barrel titles for a very niche audience.
>>
>>344710102
What kills me is the use of Neptunia avatars, signatures, etc on NISA's official forum

>>

ESRB doesn't give an AO for anything that isn't nudity or sex

You can even maintain a M with nudity and sex aka GTA/Saints Row
>>
>>344710070
Tom from XSEED made a big post about it for some game, forgot which. Do your own research, shithead, hell, email the fucking ESRB asking them if they'll do it for a game you're making. This isn't some big secret, and I'm not making anything up.

Further, my statement has nothing to do with the rest of the shit you're bitching about. It doesn't matter what content is in other games, and it doesn't matter if someone said "power distance" or not. NISA could, indeed, have submitted some content for preliminary review. Whether they did or not, the content of that response, or if they're just fabricating the whole thing, is another issue entirely.
>>
>>344710374
I'm referring to PC ports, not strictly game localization anon. In total, the number of ports from IFI this year is 4 (assuming nothing else is announced). For NISA (assuming nothing else is announced), its 5, with the latest one being released at the same time as its console version.
>>

>gets called out immediately
>denies it while still doing it and avoiding the whole censorship thing entirely (to the point where I don't even think he remembered it was the main discussion point to start with)

>>
>>344711903
It's not over SJW. The ESRB rates stuff on how "offensive" it would be. For example, the persona games in japan are rated with the equivalent of a T rating by Cero. But here in america we have legit multiculturalism, so something like fighting Yahweh can be seen as offensive to some groups, so that is why the M rating is given. But the japanese crack down hard when violence is in games, a lot of american M rated games in Japan are rated with the equvilant of AO in japan. So the "excuse" of different culture norms is legit. It is not censorship, its them trying to stay out of legal hot water. Because in america a special interest group will sue you and in Japan the PTA will get you fired and you game removed from stores.

They don't.
From the ESRB website

a completed ESRB online questionnaire detailing the game's pertinent content, which essentially translates to anything that may factor into the game's rating. This includes not only the content itself (violence, sexual content, language, controlled substances, gambling, etc.), but other relevant factors such as context, reward systems and the degree of player control; and
a DVD that captures all pertinent content, including typical gameplay, missions, and cutscenes, along with the most extreme instances of content across all relevant categories. Pertinent content that is not playable (i.e., "locked out") but will exist in the game code on the final game disc must also be disclosed.

Small correction, it's not a question of legality in the slightest. In pretty much every country except Australia, there are no laws governing the sale of video games to minors. Nor should there be. Even the shittiest soccer mom would have absolutely no grounds for a civil suit either. The only thing at stake here is money. Retailers choose to enforce restrictions on mature content in games because they fear getting a bad reputation for corrupting the young 'uns or whatever, and having their overall sales numbers go down as a result.

But otherwise, you are completely correct.

People complaining about this are new to how japanese games used to be localized. Also people making this a cause and hill to die on for some reason. Working designs was famous for gutting whole scrips and making them up from the ground up and cutting shit out to make it more palatable for the US market. the thing is that now we have a generation of people that grew up with manga and anime that were not scrubbed for NA mass consumption. So we got these companies still working with the "we must clean this up and make this fit, so it can sell to the NA marketplace" then you have this vocal contingent of people online that want the content not scrubbed.
