You earn them by playing the game, and it costs nothing to unlock.
The kind of shit that CSGO/TF2 does is the worst. Every time you get a crate, it's basically in an game advertisement to spend $2.50 on a key to open it.
I loved rocket league, items had no value and we're purely cosmetic, people wore what they liked not what was rare. Hell you could even spam offline custom bot matches that would end in 5 seconds and you'd get a hat or paint scheme each and every time because cosmetics weren't the point of the game and there's no reason to keep them from players.
Then this recent update or so introduced trade ups, cosmetic rarity, and a cap of like 5 item drops per level.
It's super fucking disappointing and I've lost a lot of respect towards the devs for it. PC gaming could be running off rumors again but I would not be surprised in the slightest if this is true.
Even League of Legends does this.
