Of course those years weren't devoid of bad games, but there was competition. Before AAA industries bought out or merged with small gaming companies games weren't just generic FPS or some edgy cinematic bullshit. The diversity of the industry is what made it interesting and the games varied.

Generally, the bad shit from the past gets forgotten. It happens with everything. Eventually, even the good stuff is forgotten and only the truly great remains. Eventually, even that fades, and at most one or two works live on in popular memory while everything else is only remembered by specialists.
For instance, 1994 is a well regarded year for video games (Super Metroid, etc). It also saw the release of Shaq Fu and a ton of other shitty games.
Still, I do think that AAA gaming has largely stagnated or declined for nearly a decade, with almost all the cool stuff happening amongst relatively niche, medium tier developers (Paradox, CDPR, From, Obsidian, etc). Indie games often have some really great ideas and/or mechanics, but rarely can execute on their great ideas. Basically, the rising cost of game development lead to design stagnation at the AAA level, pushing the cool stuff to mid-tier devs. Same thing that happens in music, movies, etc. When we complain about game quality decline, it's really just AAA devs.

Because the current gen milked the FPS genre and franchises to death. Like I said before, a few industries now have a monopoly on gaming consumption. For example 2014's top games were Watch Dogs, Inifnite Warfare and Farcry 4. I literally remember nothing from those games because it like I've already played them before
