Having never built a computer, what is the problem here? Is it just that there is too much thermal paste?
>>
>>344645742
the correct amount of thermal paste is about the size of a pea, or if your paranoid, you can do 5 very small dots. one in each corner and one in the center.

That was not a pea glob. that was about 3x the amount of toothpaste you put on a toothbrush, and thats not even going into how they moved it around with a credit card.

>>
>>344652309
Use a pea sized drop in the center. The heat sink will spread it out evenly. If you're really paranoid about coverage, you can rotate the heat sink back and forth a bit to spread the paste out even more.
>>
>>344652309
Smearing is unnecessary (introduces unnecessary air bubbles). It will eventually be removed by repeated heating of the cpu anyway, but unnecessary.

Applying in a line is also unnecessary. Best way is a dot in the middle. Some dude on the youtubes actually compares the temps achieved with different methods.

There's literally nothing wrong with using too much thermal paste apart from maybe wasting a few extra dollars and causing some mess. Still better than using too little which will make your CPU overheat in a month and force you to spend 500 bucks on a new one. Only autistic OCDtards will say otherwise.
>>
>>344652465
Good pastes are non conductive, so even if a bit spills out, it shouldn't be a any problem.
>>
>>344652936
Depending on the quality of the thermal compound and other factors (like heat), it can eventually dry out a bit. This reduces the effectiveness of the heat transfer between the CPU -> heat skin and raises your temps.

I wouldn't worry about replacing the compound unless you're getting much higher temps or planning on doing a rebuild for whatever reason.

MSI are okayish.

Honestly, people making fun of that video are just being obnoxious "I know better because I'm smart" retards.

The reality of that video is all they did wrong was waste some paste, when they put the heatsink on the excess is going to be squeezed out the sides. Almost all the manufacturers apply their paste like this so any talk of it "being the wrong way" is crap, it's just not an efficient use of the product but paste is cheap and even a small tube is more than enough.

The thing about AM1 CPUs is that they're SoCs, which means that the silicon takes up the entirety of the area beneath the heatspreader. So you need to cover the entire surface with TIM in order to get proper heat transfer. The best way to do this is to do the X or four-line * method using moderately thin lines about 3-5mm away from each side of the heatspreader.
The good thing about AM1 CPUs however is that they don't get very hot.

LGA115X CPUs just needs a fat line going north-south on the heatspreader (the silicon is rectangular and small), LGA1366/2011/AM3+/FM2+ needs the same X/* method as the AM1

>>
>>344655463
>have had my i5 for 5 years now
>have never reapplied thermal paste

>>
>>344645742

This a common misunderstanding what thermal paste is and what it does.
Thermal paste is NOT a super heat conductor that is needed to transfer enough heat at all, it is in fact WORSE than every metal- metal connection ever. It's just that no processor metal surface will ever be totally flat at microscopic levels, the surface is a wild area of microscopic "mountains" and "valleys". between these would make holes between the processor surface and the heatsink surface. The paste is there to fill these small gaps so no air is trapped and conduct the heat between them then at least as good as possible. That's why there should be just enough paste apllied to fill them, which is very little, more is counterproductive.
>>
>>344656118
This
Adding too much of the stuff makes the material act as a heat insulator, making temperatures (especially at load) worse. Not even the liquid metal stuff is immune to this (not to mention that putting it in an aluminum-to-copper system will cause the metals to dissolve over time)

IN contrast to the cables better paste really has a use and some kind of paste is actually needed.
Better paste mainly improves you temps which improves the noise. If you are fine with your fans working fulltime when watching youtube simple paste will work.
Also mayonnaise for the limited time until you get your hand on real paste.
>>
>>344658080
If you want to overclock or use a very high performance processor you need thermal paste and a third party cooler.

Otherwise the packaged cooler and pre-applied compound is just fine, however, when using that compound your CPU will probably only survive for an extra year or two beyond its warranty period.

A bit too much is better than a bit too little.
But too much is way worse than too little.

>not applying thermal paste to the other side of the CPU and the pins on the motherboard to ensure maximum heat conductivity

Fucking scrub

Yeah, I'm sure the extra twenty cents off your power bill is worth obsessing over.

You play your rig like a game, and like bragging about your sick temp scores. Nothing wrong with that, but don't try to put people down for not being autistic about their specs.

>pcucks going through all this hassle just to keep their MOBA/FPS machine working properly
I'm glad I didn't fall for the "le master race" meme.

Make sure you apply plenty on your graphics card too OP.

>only using PC for gaming
I have five AIB, and only one of them is a graphics card
Unlike most of /v/ or even /g/, I do use all 64GB of RAM, all 16 threads on my Xeon E5 processor, and all SATA ports on my mobo+AIBs for storing things other than anime and games

>he hasn't replaced the paste on his PS4's CPU and GPU
the pleba on this board I swear
>>

oh god someone knows what the paste is for?
literally everyone above this post is retarded and does not know what they are speaking about.

Also pea method a shit, who the fuck thought adding more material in the most critical area that is also the best well made part of the cpu is dumb. Almost as dumb as thinking tests of methods and shit will give any tangible results becouse IT LITERRALY doesnt fucking matters you paranoid shitters. plop some paste there and spread your butcheaks on it becouse if you think youre getting more than .5c difference for fucking as bad as you can vs doing most amazing microscopic job ever.
>>
>>344659151
buying separate paste would literally cost more than your electricity savings though?
