It doesn't matter how long since the series started, the games start incredibly slow and force you to do these terrible gathering quests that literally nobody likes.
But a few hours into the game you can start fighting against actual large monsters which is where the fun is. Go try the weapon tutorial quests and try out the weapons that look cool and their different styles (btw you can see in the menu all of the attacks and combos for each weapon+their style versions so do that).
It's about as easy to get into as 4U was, which was much more easy to get into compared to 3U.
Yeah, pretty much all the NPCs from previous games return in this game so you get all the previous cute girls in addition to the new ones.

I'll go experiment with it then, Critical Junction sounds great for the damage but I have a habit of missing it. Sakura Slash doesn't seem to useful for Aerial style that i'm going with due to how easy it is to land the spirit roundhouse with that style.
The last one might be also be rather useful for aerial however, it maxes out the spirit gauge which allows you to spam the spirit combo as much as you want, and the 12% damage buff won't go away either.

Sure, they MAY have added a new gimmick every three games, but the camera is still a piece of shit, the animations are still recycled garbage from the PS2 era and so are monster textures, hitboxes are still wonky as all fuck and now matter how "action-y" you try to make it look like, it's still as slow and as clunky as it was on PS1.
And besides, when fucking Dark Souls I has better camera work than your game, you know you fucked up, Monster Hunter games still look like they're trying to compete with 3D Sonic games when it comes to who has the shittiest camera. And still no fucking target lock function? Why? Because it's more "hardcore"? Fuck off.
Used to love the series, now I want it to die.

I did, played the shit out of them until Monster Hunter Tri, but then they kept coming out for different consoles, every time, and even though they did revamp graphics a bit in Tri, they went straight back to PS2 era for every other game.

Go with guild style for a while to get used to the weapon. Once you feel like you have a good grasp on its moves and how it works you might try other styles. Aerial SA is whats hot right now.

You have to hit the weakest spot.
Also you have to gauge the distance you are from it. Too far and you dont deal the best damage. Positioning and aiming is very important.
