Got a ps2 and ordered this game on amazon because the random amount I hear about this game all the sudden. is it actually any good or did i waste 16 dollars?
It's good, but try Persona 3 FES first if you can. It's easier to go from P3 to P4 than it is to go from P4 to P3.

In my honest opinion the story is ok and the characters are great, the gameplay is solid the social links and outside of battle activities are boring as fuck and take away the replay value. If you want story get persona 3 If you want a laugh and good time get persona 4 if you want all of that get persona 2 and never EVER play persona 1
It's a very slow JRPG with dating sim elements in it. If you dig it you'll get like 100 hours out of it, if you don't like it you'll hate it. Also it's english dub only and the dub fucking blows dick.

That's Persona 3. P4 has several shitty, non-random dungeons.
I prefer P3, but P4 is still really good. Problem is the game can feel very slow at times between dungeons, but other than that no real complaints.
shit sounds like I fucked up. Do I need to play P3 to understand the plot of 4, if i start playing just to give it a shot?
Be sure to follow a guide because this game is so fucking unbelievably unforgiving. The whole concept of catching/combining personas in any persona game is so fucking convoluted and difficult to understand. I spent 24 hours in the game, got to floor 8 or so in the second dungeon and ended up having to fucking restart because as it turns out, I'd been playing the game "wrong."
Any game that punishes new players for not knowing the mechanics is a garbage game. Persona 4's story is so fucking good but the game itself is so difficult on the NORMAL difficulty setting that I just dropped it out of frustration.

The stuff in the top left is a teleporter maze. The dungeon is mainly two floors and you rapidly shift between the two. It isn't linear.
This is the second floor. The black squares are holes that drop you onto the first floor. You don't know there is a hole there until you step in it for the first time.
This isn't the hardest dungeon in the game.

I'd recommend it playing it on easy. On higher difficulties it isn't more challenging, just more grindy and tedious.

P4 Golden is one of my favorite games. I'm guessing you never played an SMT before, but it's alright cause P4 is pretty easy minus the first boss or two.
It has a slow intro, so don't get thrown off by that, and remember to FUSE your Personas. You don't need to save an early one, you can get it back later.
And finally, the item Go-Ho teleports you back to the main hub, while saving the floor you were on in the dungeon. Don't be afraid to use it. Light and Dark attacks are OH KOs so always try to save.

To be fair the beginning is the hardest part of the game and Shadow Yukiko and Shadow Kanji can kick your shit in if you don't know exactly what to fuse for them.

Yes, especially if it's your first SMT. Shadow Yukiko is your first boss without weaknesses in vanilla (which OP is playing), you don't have a healer yet and Chie is weak to fire; Yukiko's attacks can also do a lot of damage unless you know how to fuse something that resists fire like Senri.
Same for Shadow Kanji, if Yosuke dies and you don't have any personas with Dekaja then if one of the minions casts Heat Riser on Shadow Kanji then you can be fucked unless you have Rakshasa, and even then that doesn't account for the rest of your team.

Yes it's good, possibly amazing depending on taste. It really depends on how much you like Animu graphics, and dating elements. Also the PS2 version is perfectly fine, arguably better, but that is of course debatable.

Shadow yukiko and shadow kanji are wake up bosses. If you can't beat them in a retry after adjusting strategy/fuse personas and change skillsets you may as well stop playing the game.
