Still trying to learn Java. I think I have enough knowledge to create a short text-based Choose-Your-Own-Adventure game.

But I want to learn more of Java and other computer language so that I can work as professional application or game programmer.

I still have unfinish Visual Novel game (that was made in Ren'py) that need to get done. I already have enough resources (resources that I had bought from DLsite) but I need to write proper story script and chooses consequence.

My VN game is gonna be typical dating sim but with only one girl to date with (it is better to start small than big).

I was surprised how resource intensive GameMaker can get. Having a bunch of crap on the screen, in a freaking 2D game, made some of my friend's PCs chug a bit and even destroyed mine if I tried to use Fraps at the same time.
Anyone know if Unity or Unreal would be better for a sprite based game? I think I've seen a few use Unreal, but I don't know how much better/worse they might perform in that engine.

And no, I haven't officially started yet outside of experiments and toying with fan games. Just been goofing around in engines to see which ones I might want to use.

That's what I meant to type but lost my track. Yes its still illegal because it infringes on a companies ip. You can't just color sonic green, name him an original character, and attempt to sell him for instance. If you however create your own sprites with those as inspiration like you're planning I imagine that it wouldn't cause much of a problem

There are two stealth meters in my game. One is a normal one (did the guards see you, did you leave any incriminating evidence), one is a magical one (did you leave any evidence to suggest that the crime was committed with magic, which will get the long dick of the witch hunters on your trail). I'm trying to balance that.

I want to encourage players to actually use magic because that's what the game is based around, but I also need to encourage careful planning and engagement so there has to be consequences for reckless magic use. One big sticking point is nonlethal combat - There's of course going to be a nonlethal knockout spell but I need to balance how much it costs to prepare so it can't just be spammed; and I don't know if it should count as leaving behind magical evidence (and if so, if and what I could implement as a higher cost alternative with no magical evidence). You play as a scrawny witch girl, so there's no "nonlethal chokehold that they never wake up from :^)"

The knockout spell could be pretty short ranged but still take like a second to 'charge' and maybe have some cooldown, so you have to be careful with it. Higher cost no magic evidence, first thing I think of is doing a quick Stand-esque construct that punches from above you and knocks them out, so that the KO at least seems to have just been from physical force, idk.

Just putting too many breakable blocks on screen, like you might do in Mario Maker, starts to make it slightly sluggish. What's in this image is fine, but if I put twice as many it would become a bit slow. That's a bit unacceptable, especially if I wanted to make a whole stage out of them or something similar. It worries me that Game Maker might not be very optimised, and what this could mean if I make a much more complex game with a higher resolution.

I might not have a top of the line gaming PC, but I can run most modern games on medium/passable settings. A 2D mario game should run smooth, regardless.

That's the thing, though, the actual stealth gameplay is hitman inspired; it's not about waiting out cooldowns, it's about what tools you bring for a job (or in this case what spells you allot your daily mana to, sort of vancian-style). So when I say high cost, I mean that you'd sacrifice, say, 3 casts of sleep to attune the hypothetical knockout punch.

the main character would be, like, 16 at the youngest so no loli, but I've been toying with a disguise system; part of that might be crafting a potion/spell to turn you into a little girl for the duration of a mission. My biggest problem with that so far is that it makes creating good AI even more complex and work intensive than it was before.

You probably want to figure out a way to make the logic only occur on objects that could be broken on this frame, instead of checking all of them them on every step/frame. Or if the entire level is supposed to be breakable, come up with a completely different solution than bunches of objects.

I'm pretty sure any actual pro engine is better than game Maker for anything. For a 2D game it might be more efficient to go a level lower, though, like XNA.

ironically this is the reason it slow down when everything pops up, instantiation is costly, and so is destruction. (especially in C# of language with scripts and garbage collection)
A common trick is to allocate a max number of effects at start, and just "play" them and hide them when finished, with some possible but expected artifacts when there's too much need for what you have in memory.

GM can easily handle having a ton of breakable blocks on screen at once. The problem was entirely with your own code (which is understandable if this was your first game).

GM makes it very easy to dump a ton of stuff in the game tick (step) where it doesn't belong.
