The world of Rance is made of a way that there be always a fucking mess that will force the heroes to kill people and entertain the whale God, because is set in a way that the bad guys will always come back.

Sengoku is generally good starting point to see that Rance can actually be good gameplay game, rather than just silly rape story. It's self contained, and has English patch.
After that if you're interested in lore and origins of characters, check out the Digest versions for first two games, and start playing from III.
Keep in mind that VI is the first game in series that can be considered good by modern standards, but earlier ones can still be entertaining.

The translation for that is literally edited machine script. And what's more, they ran the wrong script through Google.
Rance 02 was shipped with two script files that you could use. Original, and the version that's over twice the size of original with new events and stuff updated for current canon. They went and did the old one.

If you don't mind going for old stuff and would still like to see something like Rance, I really recommend Toushin Toshi 2.
It has kinda similar deal of progressing down one huge dungeon, but gameplay is very solid oldschool RPG style. If you've played SNES era JRPGs, you should know what to expect, but I really feel that the game still holds up to this day.
Also, it was made freeware few years back, and has fantranslation.

That the game allowed small groups of elites to dominate in certain maps but get swarmed in others due to geographical advantages was both an interesting gameplay mechanic and even integrated into the game plot very well.
Sengoku Rance is amazing but the meta can get pretty stagnant once you get an A team going. Kichikuou was good at forcing some deployment variety due to such mechanics as this.

Its been a while since I played but I am pretty certain that delaying too long can fuck you over for two reasons:
1) Sif and Bandit skank will be tortured and executed
2) Demon army will inevitably invade before you are ready (which Sengoku does as well!)
"Grinding" is generally not a good idea in the Rance Empire Sims.

Realize that not all your units are good. Aside from Rance, your best units are Rick and Barres. Cordoba is a good defensive wall but don't send him out on offense. Leila starts out great but will eventually get outclassed so don't invest too heavily on her.
Go conquer Custom ASAP so you get Shizuka and Maria. After that, you don't really get that many good units anymore.
Megallas, despite looking really cool, is only useful for one thing which is holding off the demon army. His special attack(you have to wait 1 turn before using it) lets him do HP damage to demons which will make them run away.
Due to the way demons work in the story you can send Miki to defend against 4 guys in an invading town and she won't die.

I was the image editor on the projects, and while it's true that both me and SLC(the hacker) work on lots of other stuff too, after we joined Aru on TT2, we've been working as a team ever since.
He didn't have text editor on TT2, had Pi-r on Kichikuou, and has had DxS since.
Anyway, personal preference. I actually prefer Rance IV and TT2 to Kichikuou as far as gameplay goes, though plot in that is great.
