Not a fan of this series, but Cavia closed down long before this game was made. They were just a work-for-hire dev who mostly made licensed games and spin-offs. It's the Drakengard series director who would probably be responsible for the things you listed.

The Drakengard series is one of my favorites I've ever experienced, bad to mediocre gameplay be damned. Everyone prepared me for such shit gameplay in Nier I'm actually having a lot of fun with it, the AoE attacks are awesome.
It would be about 5 times better if he didn't put away his sword every time you took a step forward though, makes it impossible to keep combos going.
