Is that steamshare? I don't know much about it, I figured it wasn't worth my time when I first heard about it.

Can people share with strangers two ways to basically half-cost future purchases by saying "I buy one, then you buy one"? Or is it a one way thing?

My brother and a few friends all have a few games, and I have a lot. Any risks or problems with sharing games so we can all access games one of us owns?

Steam family share works by, if you sign into a computer with your steam account (and click a checkbox), other steam users on that computer can play the games in your library.

The limit discussed above, is that only one person can access your steam library at a time. So, if you try and launch a game on Steam, it will kick off any of your friends from their computers, if they're playing a game from your library.

Unless your friend has a different schedule than you, such as different time zones or working nights, you'll hit this problem often. It's really intended more for if you want someone you live with the play your Steam games, without all sharing the same physical computer all the time.

Well I have just little over 2k friends on Steam, most of them are from my college days, some from work, some I've met through MMOs, but they're all people I've kept in contact with over the years, can never have too many friends

But sometimes I just want to play a single player game, and I forget to use offline mode.
>>
>>344597395
That probably happens because there's seperate pop-ups for if your friend signs in, and when they launch a game.

They could have the first type hidden, so they only notice friends launching games.

Get some more friends, bro, it's not hard, just follow the simple rules

>Don't be a douche
>Don't tell people how to play
>Don't be a downer if you're not winning

And you'll be fine, people like to hangout with happy people as corny as that sounds, people who treat others nicely and like bros, it's easy to find friends, you'll be fine.

This is all true, but I would also add you'll have a better chance of getting internet pals from forums and shit. I've got internet pals I've had for more than 10 years now, but I don't have any I picked up from random multiplayer games. At most I friended a few people and talked to them after a good multiplayer game, but then we never talk again and I end up removing them.

Also never add anyone from /v/. I've done that a few times and they've all been insufferable memesters and weebs. The few decent people from /v/ I've added are when I'm randomly gifting shit, and even then I boot them after I give them whatever game.

Don't have to be generic, just don't be a jerk and people will want to be your friend, doesn't mean you have to be Mr Rogers either, but 95% of people on both here and most online multiplayer games are total assholes who are just mean to everyone and then complain they have no friends

It's honestly not that hard to make friends as long as you're not a total dick to everyone you meet.

1. It won't limit me and my personal steam account, I can just kick friends off if I REALLY want to play? Basically, you can share and forget it?

2. The only real limit is "no playing at the same time?" Most of my friends will play games for an hour or two a day at most like I do, and half of the time the games I'm playing aren't even through Steam, so this doesn't seem like a massive problem.

3. Can it go both ways? Like, I can access a friend's stuff and he can access mine? Or will it only let us share one way?

4. It doesn't do stupid shit like letting your "family" access your steam wallet or purchase with your card, right?
>>
>>344598703

At the end of the day, yes. One of my pals talks shit constantly over the mic when we play Overwatch together as though he was on /v/. Niggers, jews, weebs, Gremlin, etc. But at the end of the day he's a fine dude and he just goes into shitposting overdrive when playing Overwatch. If I only knew him from Overwatch I'd never friend him. Because he was generic nice guy elsewhere we're chums and talk shit together while playing videogames.

It's not rocket science.

Go to the page where you request a refund. It's basically just "I don't want to see this anymore, but the refund period expired so just delete it".
>>
>>344599091

1. Yes. When you're in expanded library view mode (The one with the play button) it'll tell you if your library is in use elsewhere and who is using it. You can still launch a game at any time and they'll get the 5 minute warning to close their shit down because you're playing games.

2. Technically you can play at the same time for 5 minutes. The person borrowing gets booted if the host wants to play shit.

3. It can go both ways if your friend shares his library with you as well, but it doesn't go both ways just by setting a single share up. Once you're both sharing shit however you can play a game from his library and he can play a game from your library in a beautiful nohomo 69 with 0 issues because only one game is in use on each library in that situation. But games that you both own aren't shared, so that can fuck things up.

4. No, though you have to sign the Steam account in to the computer to share.

Thanks. Sorry if it's a bother, I DID read the FAQ on steam but it doesn't seem to get into these sorts of details.

>Once you're both sharing shit however you can play a game from his library and he can play a game from your library in a beautiful nohomo 69 with 0 issues because only one game is in use on each library in that situation.

THAT sounds amazing. So it isn't even really "Only one person can use steam once you share", I can still play on his games while he plays mine, unless I'm misunderstanding.

> But games that you both own aren't shared, so that can fuck things up.

I'm not sure I understand this part. If I own COD69 and he owns COD69, we can't both play at once because it considers it shared even though it isn't?

>No, though you have to sign the Steam account in to the computer to share.

That's just a one time thing though, right? Like, I can log into my Hentai69 account on his computer, authorize the share, and then he can log into his NEET1989 account and access the games I bought on my Hentai69 account, as long as I allow him to? The important thing for me is that we don't have to constantly go to each other's houses to set it up, since my NEET friend lives with his parents and I'd rather not be there too often.

>I can still play on his games while he plays mine

This is correct. If it's something you both own then it isn't shared, even if there are differences in DLC (Naturally you both preordered Fallout 4, but only your friend loves Todd enough to have preordered the season pass. You can't play his DLC-enabled FO4 since you own FO4. If you're a monster and didn't buy FO4 at all, you would be able to play his copy DLC and all) but if you're both playing games from the other person's library then you're golden.

>COD69

No, if you both own COD69 then you're playing your own copies. So player A is playing COD69-A and player B is playing COD69-B. If player B is playing Underage Panty Sniffer-A from your library because he doesn't own it and you want to play COD69, you'll be playing COD69-A because you can't play his copy of it if you own it yourself, even if he's sharing his library with you.

>One time thing

Mostly true. It gets screwed up on occasion and has to be renewed but it's not terribly common. Changing "Computer" (Changing hardware) will break it for the borrower because you greenlight both an account to borrow your shit and an individual computer. If Player-B has two computers you would have to log in to both using your account and ok each one for Steam library sharing.

In your case, yeah, you should only need to do it once unless he upgrades his machine or it does the occasional flake out. Keep in mind you'll get the Steam Guard shit too, so you'll have to be able to access your email to get the Steam Guard code assuming you're using it (You should be).

Steam sharing isn't really limitless Gaben-friendly piracy but it's pretty great for close friends. I've got around 3,500 games and share them with a few pals, and a buddy of mine with 5,000 shares 'em with me. Could be awful if someone leeches too heavily, but again it plays in to the "Share with close friends" thing.

And it's no bother, not many people use it. Good to spread the word.

One more thing while I'm thinking about it, non-Steam games you added to Steam to play with the overlay don't count as games in your library. So that both means that adding your pirated copy of Undertale doesn't allow your borrowing friend to play it, AND it means when you play non-Steam game: Undertale through Steam it doesn't count as using your library, so your friend can be playing your shared games while you do it.

>In your case, yeah, you should only need to do it once unless he upgrades his machine or it does the occasional flake out. Keep in mind you'll get the Steam Guard shit too, so you'll have to be able to access your email to get the Steam Guard code assuming you're using it (You should be).

Sounds great, as long as it's not some constant "renew this once a week" thing it isn't a big deal. I got Steam Guard a while back to make selling cards a possibility, I'll make sure he has it too next time I see him.

I heard about this on and off a year or two ago, I'm surprised I never really see it come up. It's not unlimited, but it's pretty damn generous considering Valve could just say "You want to share games? Fuck off and buy your own or gift copies" and nobody would really care. I have maybe 230 games and the NEET I know has more than me, but a lot of bundle shit that almost nobody would ever buy normally. Sounds like a good deal either way.

It only fucks things up in the sense that if you want to play such-and-such game, you'll have to play your own copy. The gaming-69 only works if you're both playing games you don't own. It's not a major issue but it can be mildly annoying if you don't feel like dumping your pal.

They actually used to be a lot more generous with it. It used to be you could play borrowed games in offline mode, which was the glorious Gaben-sanctioned piracy wonderland since the borrower could play anything any time. Now borrowers have to be in online mode (Technically the library host can play in offline mode which would allow the borrower to keep playing, but then the host isn't getting Steam chat and shit which may or may not be an issue) but it still is really nice. The biggest issue is that since the host has to sign on to his Steam account on the borrower's computer, it's more of a pain doing that with internet pals. Usually end up doing it with Teamviewer and just taking over the borrower's PC to do all that shit, and can set yourself up with a garbage password ahead of time if you're so inclined.

I'm always afraid to just mute them when that happens because I'm afraid they might hurt themselves. I mean if they just want someone to listen they can talk.
>>
>>344602727
fucking this. Also it's not as if some of them I never want to talk to again, ever, but I sure as hell can only handle them in limited doses.

>get on steam to play a game or talk to perhaps one or two people
>said one or two people have the common courtesy not to try and start a convo when i'm in a game
>Others will ask "Sup?" when i'm playing a game. My current activity is obvious.

>Log onto steam
>go to play game and get 3 messages from same 2 or three people every time as I start game asking "Sup?"

I usually keep my shit offline for this reason.

Honestly I don't mind listening to shit like this, I do it with one of my friends on a rare occasion, but he was talking to me and shooting the shit for like 2 hours until it turned into that.

OH, now I get it. Bascially, you can't cheat the system a bit by just playing your friend's copy of a game you already own, so they can access your stuff. Not too big of a deal for me.

>It used to be you could play borrowed games in offline mode, which was the glorious Gaben-sanctioned piracy wonderland since the borrower could play anything any time. How does that work? The family-games come with some sort of DRM saying "this can't be played offline"? The files still get downloaded onto their computer and stay there, right? It doesn't sound like a deal breaker, since it's a free service and I can play by their rules, but that's pretty interesting since Steam doesn't naturally have DRM from what I understand.

Quite a long time ago the thing that convinced me to switch to PC gaming was the fact that Steam lets you have a forever-yours copy of a game with cloud saves and all that shit, WITHOUT forcing you to stay online to play it. A few years back I didn't have money for everything, so I let my internet contract end and didn't extend it, and spent about half a year on downloaded anime and steam games in offline mode. That's got to be my favorite thing about Steam, I didn't realize they came up with a way to include DRM without forcing it on everyone yet.

>OH, now I get it.

Yup, exactly.

>How does that work?

Haven't tested every version of it since they changed the offline rule, but it actually may still work with DRM-free games if you launch the executable directly outside of Steam. The majority of Steam games use light Steam-DRM (Mostly because they do shit like achievements, cloud saving, etc), and in those cases yeah. If you try to launch the borrowed game while in offline mode it'll tell you you can't play borrowed shit offline.

That's specifically borrowed shit though. Games you own won't throw a shitfit over being played in offline mode, it's just that somewhere along the line there's something that tells Steam such-and-such is a borrowed game, and if the game's executable tries to talk to Steam then it can tell you to fuck off. For games you own of course it'll talk to Steam, see you're in offline mode, and then say "Ok whatever" and launch anyway.

You do realize you can hide the game in your library right. Its under the Set Category button. You can find your hidden games under "Hidden" when you hover over "Library".
