Why is this game so fucking praised? There's nothing special about it, it's just your generic 3D platformer.

At least Banjo Kazooie had some variety.

Nice try, Henry

It was the first to do 3D in a way that worked. It's mainly nostalgia and the games long since been surpassed. It's praised for setting standards in design though, and if you weren't underage or jaded you'd know that.

I'm a nintenyearold and I think this game is garbage. it's hard to go back and play but I will admit that it was a literal game changer when it came out.
>>
>>344571312

Wasn't anything like it when it came out. That and the fact that it's still playable today due to its extremely tight controls.
>>
Freedom. In Super Mario 64, you could go about acquiring the stars just about any way to wanted. Longjumping off a ledge across half the level, walljumping up to a tower and landing on the star from there or simply triplejumping over obstacles. It gives tons of re-playability.

In BK, all you've got is this tiny hop and pitiful hover, and panels that work as powerups. Generally there's only one way to go places, and it really makes backtracking the stages tedious.
>>
>>344571312
Agreed to some extent. It's one of the most boring classic N64 titles. I have difficulty bringing myself to play it again on an emulator. Even the memes weren't enough to make it interesting again.
>>
We still love this game because the 3D platform market is so scarce, and SM64 did it right.
>>
>>344571737
In banjo you can clear each stage right away though. So you shouldn't have to worry about backtracking too much.
>>
Anyone else looking forward to Star Road 2? Been waiting for an update for a long time.

Just play Super Mario Sunshine instead.

Did they fix the camera?

As much as I love Sunshine, the fuck are you going on about? Sunshine isn't much of a 64 sequel.

>>344572225
What was wrong with the camera?

Dunno but Crash shits on it :3

Ban over. I'm back! Love you, /v/.

Crash is trash and I'll never understand why people like it so much. 2D sections made out of boxes with mediocre platforming, 3D sections are all obstacle tunnels. Played my PS1 a hell of a lot more than my N64, and Crash was certainly not the highlight of that experience.

At least CTR could hold a candle to Mario Kart, but the main series is awful.

mario is just abstract garbage with no actual design.

>>344571312
>it's just your generic 3D platformer.
and why is it generic? because every game after ripped it off
>>
>>344571312
Non-linear stages filled with secrets, extremely loose and optional game route that didn't expect you to find or even know about a good chunk of the stars, and very little handholding or railroading to better emphasis the previous points.
>>
Spyro is the best 3D platformer
Try to prove me wrong
You can't.
>>
>>344571312
It nailed the controls and camera in a 3d game for the first time.
But At the end of the day it's just a glorified tech demo. It was the beginning of Nintendos arrogant laziness which has been getting worse and worse each year. In Mario 64 they give you like 4 levels and make you play them repeatedly with slightly different objectives.

i never liked banjo because the character designs were awful and the music was straight up annoying

Why is this game so fucking praised? There's nothing special about it, it's just your generic first person role-playing game.

At least Deus Ex had some variety.

I think the Nintendo 64 generation is completely over hyped, but you have to admit Mario 64 was fluid as fuck.

Someone post the webm of Wigglers red coins.

There was not a good 3D platformer before Mario 64. Try again.

Star Road 1 was amazing and superbly well done. I played it years ago and I've been waiting for SR2 just as long. I'm excited.
>>
It was a technical masterpiece of its time, but SMW and SMB3 to this day can be picked up and they are still fun, sm64 seems barebones if you play it today.

that damn triple jump on the pillars

I had to YouTube how to figure that out, and it still took me a bunch of tries.

Personally I love it because it sets seven or so goals in each stage that you can (generally) do in any order you please. You go around the map and instead of just one-and-doneing it you explore every nook and cranny to learn how it works so you can pull off all the things it asks you to do. It's very efficient in that way; there's only 15 or so worlds but because of all the unique things you can do in each it feels much larger than that.

I'm sure there's a better way to word what I mean but I hope you get the point.
