not canon anymore!!!

Because the only hack'n'slash game after it was Force Unleashed, and it was made for consoles. Therefore, lightsabers were replaced with glowbatons.

Masketta Man?
>>
>>344560429

I've never played a Jedi Knight game, but that combat honestly looks like garbage.

Lightsabers are actually supposed to be very light, considering the only solid part of them is the handle.

There's no reason for them to be swinging the lightsabers around like steel greatswords. It looks slow and incredibly clunky.

This is coming from a huge mount and blade fan
>>
>>344562123
Well if you didn't play it you shouldn't say shit like that anon, even in star wars theres heavy light saber styles like that dumb shit savage did and then theres fast styles like good ol palp and windu
>>
>>344562123
It's a fucking stance you fucking moron, you've got 3.
Fast, Medium and Heavy.
>>
>>344561338
What does Moya have to do with Star Wars lightsaber combat?
>>
>>344562123
Jedi Knight games combat is the closest we ever got the OT, but I understand a prequel baby like you would be triggered. Also what >>344562358 said.
Fast stance is the Prequelitis you want.
>>
>>344562123
>>344562358

Fast = prequels
Medium = original trilogy
Heavy = exists for gameplay purposes
>>
>>344562639

>Prequel baby.

Holy shit that deflection. Obi wan moved faster in the original triolgy, and he was an old man.

The funy thing is, that kind of combat is completely fucking prequel-esque, with people flipping and flailing their lightsabers around everywhere
>>
>>344560429
Strong style is cancer.
>>
>>344562123
>Lightsabers are actually supposed to be very light, considering the only solid part of them is the handle.

t. prequel shitter. The original vision for lightsabers is that the beam generated a magnetic field around the blade which added real weight, lightsabers are actually supposed to be heavy as fuck, like a real weapon. The original trilogy uses this idea in its duels, KOTOR uses this idea in its duels, and Force Awakens actually made a return to this idea too.

Don't talk shit unless you know what you're talking about.
>>
>>344562850
>>344562887
I'm 100% sure heavy/strong stance is based on some of the "aggressive" stances described in the books.
>>
>>344560429
Because the masses don't want to actually put in effort to be good at a game.
Thy want to press a button and instantly kill shit and do cool stuff as if thy already have skill.

And Star wars is unfortunately not a series that caters to hardcore fans but normies only.
>>
>>344561532
>The overall hero in Star Wars is a child killer
>>
>>344563110
>hero

Luke is the hero. Vader is the hero of the past that failed in his quest and fell into darkness. How you could mistake that is beyond me
>>
>>344563012

That makes no fucking sense.

A stream of plasma contained in a magnetic field would have and infinitely small amount of mass.

Unless you can cite something about lightsabers magically getting heavier when they get turned on, that premise is completely fucking stupid

I love jedi academy....still play it. Not sure why there is not a current version of this with the graphics. The combat took tons of skill...especially in mp. One of the best twitch based games Imo for pc.
>>
>>344563059
You are correct, the stances are based on the (still) canonical Lightsaber forms.
Red (Heavy) is based on Shii-Cho (Form 1) and Juyo (Form 7).
Then the hidden Desann variant of Red is based on Makashi (Form 2) and Vapaad (different version of Form 7).
Blue (Fast) is based on Soresu (Form 3) and Ataru (Form 4).
The hidden Tavion variant of Blue is based on Shien (Form 5).
And finally Yellow (Medium) is based on Niman (Form 6).
>>
>>344563573
Do people still play on movie battles?

There was a ton of threads up for it when the newest star wars came out, but I haven't seen anybody talk about it at all since then

Prequel sabers: No feel of impact unless its saber against saber

Original trilogy: Sabers will encounter resistance when cutting trough things. It will still be like cutting trough butter with a molten rod, but you feel something
>>
Raven Software didn't get another chance to make Jedi Knight games, which was a shame. they turned Star Wars action games into a shitty Jedi May Cry

Now Raven is locked down in the Call of Duty dungeon
>>
>>344563012
That would defeat a large portion of the advantage of laser swords, where you don't need apply any force in sword swinging.
>>
>>344564732
You never noticed how their swings are completely different from yours?
>>
>>344565343
The entire fucking point of lightsabers is that A NORMAL HUMAN CAN'T USE THEM EFFECTIVELY, THAT'S THE POINT.
THEY AREN'T MEANT TO BE "EFFECTIVE" IN THE HANDS OF A REGULAR HUMAN.
They're supposed to be a symbol of status for Jedi and only usable by them since only Jedi can actually them effectively without it being a handicap.
>>
Can I still get into Movie Battles 2 as a first-timer? Is it still active?
>>
>>344565379
Not really. But then it's been a very long time since then, last playthrough I did was dark side ending in JA, and I'm pretty sure Kyle uses the standard 3-style moveset. Then again, you also fight Tavion first...so my memory could just be shit.

>>344564969
Never seen that before, thanks anon.
>>
>>344565649
Yes and yes.
Start with either Soldier or ET (Elite Trooper) though in more recent builds ET got renamed to Commander but all veterans still call it ET.

Jedi/Sith is pretty much the hardest class to play so don't even bother at first. They're based on OT Jedi/Sith rather than the all powerful Prequelitis shit.

Tavion uses dual lightsaber movement when wielding the lightsaber and Ragnos staff. Then she switches to saber staff style when wielding only the Ragnos staff.
Kyle uses the classic 3 styles.

The Tavion and Desann styles aren't used in JK3 SP I believe outside of Alora who uses the Tavion style when you fight her on Hoth for sure. Don't remember if she or Rosh used the Desann style.

But yeah play JK2, it's a much better game when it comes to un-modded experience.
>>
>>344560429
Consoles. It wouldn't work on a controller.
>>
>>344565867

Why are they so hard? I'm a long time player of the vanilla multiplayer and did pretty well duelling on FFA servers
>>
Did you even watch the video? Lucas flip flops on how heavy their supposed to be within 2 minutes

>The were supposed to be very heavy
>You NEEDED 2 hands to wield them
>Until Lucas decided that wielding them one handed was fine too.
>>
>>344566184
Because, IF YOU READ MY FUCKING POST, you'd know that MB2 has completely different Lightsaber system. It plays NOTHING like vanilla. It's a completely different game in every sense of the word. Guns play different as well. Going into MB2 with vanilla JK2/JKA experience will give you nothing, in fact it will only fuck you over since you will try fighting as if it was JK2 or JKA.
>>
>>344566184

>Why are they so hard?

Not that guy and I haven't played much of MB2, but for one you have to actively block incoming fire, rather than have your character do it on its own by default.
>>
MB2 does Jedi/Sith right.
Hard to learn, hard to master, but once you finally do, you really feel poweful but still aren't a Prequels demigod.

Good luck though since it takes months of experience to get even remotely decent at them in MB2 and veterans will still mop the floor with you.

>>344566273
The point was (which they do explicitly state in that video) that Luke became increasingly proficient over the course of the movies, so he could try to one-hand it. It's a neat touch that him trying to one-hand it against Vader in Empire Strikes Back is pretty much what got his hand cut off, and then exactly the same thing happens in reverse in Return of the Jedi.

>JA MP
>better

It has worse maps and broken lightsaber mechanics because Raven couldn't finish the game due to license expiring. Poke/Spin is actually a bug that was supposed to be fixed, for starters. It was present in JK2 as well but got fixed in patch 1.02. JKA branched off development from 1.0 build of JK2 hence why it retained the bug.

it's called heavy style. darth vader swings his saber like that in the movies. he's swinging with more strength so it's more difficult to block the blowsand forces your opponent to tire themselves out having to dodge or block strong attacks

If you want to play Dark Forces the best way is the following:

http://xlengine.com/downloads/
The source port itself here.

And here's the fix:
http://xlengine.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1062

You still need Dark Forces itself obviously, since this is just a source port.

Oh and you can use console commands, such as r_fov to change FOV for example.

Use "cmdlist" without quotations for full command list.

Not sure if that bugfix addon fixes all bugs, but here's a guide with workarounds to the known bugs in case you run into them.
I know for sure that the fix I posted fixes Nar Shadaa crash, so you definitely won't run into that one at least.

Its the only edge case.
In the Original Trilogy, limps get chopped right off, but the Saber doesn't go straight trough, the momentum slows down because the prop do get hit.

In the Prequel, every single laser movement is super floaty. Even when decapitating Darth Maul, there is no stop in momentum.
As they progress, there is more and more of it. From guns to droids, to more.
I am not sure if the Blast Door would actually be any different if it was in Episode 4-6.

Its mostly a difference in how its filmed. In episode 4-6, sabers slows down because they hit a prop, even if the shatters as its suppose to due prop works.
In 1, there is some saber flailing against the Droids. In 2-3, the saber just flails trough, in true CGI fashion.
>>
PC only games don't sell high enough to get the rights to create a star wars game.

Has to be all platforms and accessible to play to maximize profit. Movement can't be that fast since it's hard to play with controllers and normies suck at games. Better chance at getting games with similar mechanics but not being star wars.
>>
>>344568948

Dark Forces is a good game if you like shooters of that era, but it's its own custom engine.

Dark Forces 2 is great, I'd recommend if you want to play as sith or jedi that you play Sith on the easier difficulty as Jedi are OP in the game thanks to Force Protection/Healing.

Mysteries of the Sith is a pain in the balls to get functioning on modern OS, but if you can get it to work its about as good as DF2. The story is weaker, and you don't have the wonderfully hammy FMV cutscenes, but the gameplay is arguably better as are some of the levels.

JK2 is great; the SP takes awhile to really build momentum and the shooting isn't all that good, but once you get the lightsaber it becomes incredibly fun.

JA is sort of like an expansion to JK2 it doesn't feel like a full sequel. The gameplay improvements are welcome but the story and is garbage and the SP feels disconnected and fairly boring at times. The customization options for your character are a nice touch, but it just feels much more mediocre overall.

Overall its a great series though, I'd just recommend the set when it goes on sale as basically every game is at or above a 7/10. Just be aware that the 3 games prior to JK2 have aged, and are difficult to get running properly (especially MoS).

Sad how we've only had one Star Wars game in the past couple years. If anything was hurt by the Disney buyout it's Star Wars games.
>>
>>344571595
No problem, I just did my first playthrough of every game in the series so my overviews aren't tainted with nostalgia. I started with the first game and went through each chronologically and its probably the best way to go unless you absolutely cannot stand 90s era shooters.

Also MoS rarely gets talked about because it is a REAL bitch to get running (I think I started and stopped it like 4 times before some new bug would crash everything). But it is a great game and deserves to be mentioned with the rest, the main protag isn't as interesting as Kyle Katarn, but some of the levels are just bursting with fan service in the best of ways and are very well designed.

>>344571741
I have no idea, I get from a story telling perspective why it would be nice to move to an older Kyle training an apprentice. But they just really fucked it up with characters that were just completely uninteresting. Really everything comes down to making Rosh Penin a fucking annoyance.

Sure make him unlikable, but don't make him irritating.

It's a good series, there isn't an outright bad game in the entire series.

JK2/JA is a great jedi simulator

DF is from the "DOOM clone" era so it plays like an early-mid 90s shooter. Its a little more "cinematic" than DOOM or any of those games, but the shooting is much slower and less frantic.

DF2/MoS; its like Quake with a lightsaber and an enjoyable plot, HUGE levels, fun fun game.

Well it came out in 97. technology was making huge leaps back then. dark forces REALLY impressed for 95's standards.

What always throws me back is the control scheme for these old games. Of course these days WASD + left mouse to shoot + space to jump is THE universally accepted best way to control 99% of shooting games. Back then, not so much
Dark forces controls:
Arrow keys: up down forwards and backwards, left right to rotate
> and < or alt + arrows to strafe
c to crouch
x to jump
shift for "speed mode" (sprint basically)
caps for "slow mode" (slow walk)
pgup and pgdn for looking up and down and keypad 5 for center view
ctrl for fire and z for alt fire
0-9 weapon select
f8 holster weapon
F9/f10 cycle weapons up/down
tab map
+/- zoom map
F1 brings up the quest menu and inventory/objectives 'n shit
f2 NVgoggles
f3 cleats (for moving on ice)
f4 gas mask
f5 head lamp
f6 head wave on/off
f7 Hud toggle
pause to pause
backspace switch between current and last weapon
alt + f8 toggle automount.

What a fucking mess by todays standarts. Or Argonauts Alien Ressurection on the PS1 which for the first time used the left analogstick to move and the right to aim. something gamespot heavily bashed them for since they were used to the old style of using the shoulder buttons to strafe. kek.

Personally, I don't feel JO got lightsabers right either. Dismemberment mod is cool and all, but it's not very satisfying to kill everything with one hit. I'm not saying sabers have to be batons, but dismemberment effectively replaces the fun with edge.
I'd be more satisfied with lightsaber combat that features blade clashes so you're actually fighting like in the OT.
A system with more intuitive damage and control, like Die by the Sword's, would be ideal.

I recall killing everything except bosses with one hit when I enabled dismember in console. You could even move your mouse idly and lop off every limb off a trooper or reborn before they hit the ground.
Shit like that just shatters immersion.

>>344581219
Some kind of momentum mechanic which allows opponents to switch between offense and defense would be ideal to allow for more dramatic duelling. Though like I said, I'd rather have fighting be more like the OT than overchoreographed bullshit like in the prequels.

Yeah, no shit. In the vanilla game that basically never happens outside of shit-tier enemies like troopers, anything with a saber requires multiple direct hits or a solid strike with Strong. The tougher dark jedi take a shit ton of damage and you can get really good fights out of them sometimes.
