Holy fuck I seriously literally JUST had an argument with people who thought smash brothers is better without items. fucking hell these people couldn't comprehend the idea of fun. "muh super competitive tournament styles for a fun couch game!" /v/ take me home.
>>
>>344551535
Half the items are useless and the other half are bullshit.

back to the turnies with you. bet you think edgy fast melee is better than comfy fun brawl too.
>>
>>344551823
Yeah, that's exactly what they sounded like. I have no idea why they didn't want to play with items, it was so boring.
>>
>>344551843
No, I hate melee and tournaments.
>>
>>344552064
*and fun
>>
>>344551758
>tfw you have that one friend who thinks pokeballs only on very high frequency is a good time
>>
>>344551535
but what if, i know it's crazy, they actually like having a fair and balanced challenge without random shit going on?
what if they have fun by fighting with a similar skilled player in a fight where only the best one wins?
do you think that chess would be more fun if every 4 moves one random piece got deleted?
>>
There's two types of people in this world, people who play smash with items on and people who don't.
>>
>>344552201
>false equivalency

Dank
>>
>>344552116
>you get goldeen
>your friend gets a legendary

>>344552105
You only have fun by using items? Probably that guy that can only win by using a hammer or Gust Bellows.
>>
>>344551535
Tell them that adapting to the changing environment on the fly is part of being skilled.
>>
I prefer without items, the fighting and movement mechanics in smash are fun enough without adding a ton of random variables. For playing with groups of friends of various skill levels items are really useful to keep the mood light and anybody from totally curbstomping the rest, so it's not like I'm against them, but personally I have more fun without.
>>
>>344552416
fine.
mind addressing the other 2 points?
maybe you should stop being angry at other people for not liking what you like
>>
>>344551535
So in retaliation you cry on the internet for comfort?

Items are only fun when they are of the throwing variety. Everything else is fun killing
>>
>>344552551
exactly, this is why items are skill added. I always played with items, I went to one competitive match where they played with no items (never even heard of such a thing) and I bet everyone's ass red. dumb no itemers.
>>
Pokeballs only. Bob-ombs also acceptable.
>>
>>344552551
Autismos don't like change.
>>
>>344552873

They're fun for one round, then I want to kill myself.

>>344551843
>edgy fast melee

What did he mean by this?
>>
OP, items are perfectly fine if you enjoy a casual, more randomized gameplay.

However, removing items removes a great element of chance, meaning the game becomes far more skill based and less so "an item randomly spawned near me, thus I gain a significant advantage."

TL;DR - Items are fun for parties, non-items are fun for serious play.
>>
>>344553012
original smash is a nice friendly kiddy game
melee is an edgy teen fucking the system trying to be serious
brawl is a comfy mature adult
>>
>>344552660
Why should I argue with a person that's so mad? I think I'd rather not since he's already so set in his ways.
>>
>>344553027
anyone who plays smash for serious play needs to die.
>>
>>344553027

>>
Gas the competitive players, smash war now.
>>
>>344551535
I don't even like playing with items in a casual environment. They are the most annoying things to deal with. If I was really forced to use items I'd probably only play Melee because at least half of the items aren't complete bullshit like they are in Sm4sh.
>>
>>344553012
Never bothered learning how to SHFFL or WD.
Got mad he never won against actual humans.
Goes to play Brawl instead like a casual.
>>
>>344553181

i'm not. i'm casually discussing vidya on a vidya discussing board

>i can totally address your points

sure thing buddy
if you didn't want to discuss why did you even reply
why did you even come to /v/
>>
>>344553527
>Never bothered learning how to SHFFL or WD.
none of my friends did that shit, we played it cause it was easy for everyone to play. and that's the way it was intended.
>>
Only time items are really fun is in 64.
Items are too weak in melee and are overpowered to infuriating in brawl/4.
>>
>>344553027
You shouldn't see it as "an item randomly spawned near me" but as "I should be careful at all times", should an item randomly spawn near the enemy that gives him a great advantage.

Plus, it means you have to be skilled enough to keep the opponent from getting it or avoiding the negative consequences. It means distance management which adds to the skill.

If items were on in tournaments faster characters would be even better because they can get to items before slower ones.

It would also mean the best strategy would be to "avoid the enemy until an item spawns that can kill him fast"

items are fine for casual play because no one will play like this, but in a competitive setting it would be awful.

Mario Kart is way fucking better without bullshit items.
Jesus Christ /v/, you just keep getting more and more casual.
>>
>>344554986
then I hope they all burn to death. I'm talking about some people in a discord I met who wanted to play melee together, now I honestly can't see them the same way I did, they're like aliens to me now. no items, I just can't understand.
>>
>comfy fun

Nintenfags are the worst.
>>
>>344554685
I regularly play without items in Mario Kart.

Sometimes you just want to have fun racing, you know? Same surely goes for beating people off of the screen.
>>
>>344554685
I don't even get what you're trying to say, if you remove the items in mario kart you're going to end up with a boring racer with arcade physics...might as well play f-zero in that case
>>
>>344551535
You can like whatever you want. However, everyone I know has house rules of no items.

The game is much more fun trying to improve yourself than 'lol xd i got a hammer i win!'
>>
>>344555320
The same way you should just play a real fighting game instead of Smash without items.

because they don't want the game to be full of RNG they should die?

and when you remove items in smash you're going to end up with a fighter with arcade physics

If you actually know how to play the game, items are useless against you.
Casual shitters can 3 v 1 a good player and use items, the good player will still win.
They will comboed 0-to-death because no DI, edgeguarded for free, items catched, hammers interrupted, casuals stomped.
Items do nothing, they still lose because they know jackshit about the actual game.
>>
>>344555546
maybe if any other fighter had movement that rivaled Melee
>>
>>344555174
hello rato

thinks its spam lmao
>>
You know what's fun? Power Stone 2 on an empty stage with no items.
>>
>>344555889
I bet there are people who would actually play like that
>>
>>344551535
For a lot of people, playing the game they like competitively is more fun than playing it not competitively for fun. It's not about "If you want to play competitively you should just switch to another game". It's about COMBINING the two, and obviously, a lot of people combine the competitive nature AND smash bros together, thus wanting to play with less RNG elements and stuff like that
>>
>>344551535

I fucking love playing seriously with items.
While I understand the reasoning behind it not being a thing in tournaments, I still wish more good players actually knew how to deal with items and enjoyed playing with them like we do at home, that shit only gets cooler the better you get at the game.
