They're dictator simulators, a mix of city builder and a political game. Tropico 3 is great fun, Tropico 4 is more of the same and I haven't played 5 but people say it's shit so eh.
They're also very easy but man, there's nothing like getting to be El Presidente and making a golden rotating statue of yourself.

Tropico 4 is one of my favorite city builders, I got into it right during the Sim City disaster and was loads of fun. The soundtrack is good and the humor isn't too bad either. But then I tried getting into 5 and for some reason I had a much harder time running a successful island in it. Haven't tried it extensively though, I should give it a try again.

I'd say they're closer to Sierra City Builders than to Sim City. They're pretty great, although the company tends to release a lot of DLC that are kind of like paying for cheating [one of them for the fourth one, I believe, is a cement factory that can make building costs up to 20% cheaper if I'm not mistaken].

Yeah, that's one of the main problems with the game. It's actually easier to spoil your people and cater to the political parties than to be a dictator.
Mainly because the only real downside to being nice is that it costs money, and money is easy as fuck to make.
Once you've get a factory or two up and running you never have to worry about money again. You can then start pleasing everyone.
It should be much harder to please people, and it should be outright impossible to please all the various parties at the same time. The game should force some conflict upon you.

That happens to me too, doesn't help that not being an asshole is also easier. I think Prison Architect and Hard West were the only games where I felt perfectly fine being evil, aside from sandbox games like Postal 2 or GTA.

I have never played 1 or 2, so my opinions cannot cover those.
Tropico 3 or 4 are not bad places to start, since they're essentially the same game. I'd recommend 4.

I was a bad presidente when i was younger. But i was rich.
I've only played 3. It was fun at first but got boring fast because it's too easy- I felt like I was doing the same thing in every scenario.
Also it was annoying how the construction AI freaked out if you tried to build more than a couple of things at once.

What would you like to see in Tropico 6?
I'd love something that changed the time.
Perhaps shift between night and day. People work during the day and sleep/eat/get entertainment/commit crime/etc during the night.
Or perhaps some weekdays, with most people not working on saturday and sunday. Pubs and restaurants would be much more busy then and a lot of people would be going to church sunday.
Just something to shake up that endless summer noon the game is kept in.
Other than that I'd love to see some better transportation. Bicycles or scooters would be great. Public transport would be even better. Something so you could have a farm district far away from everywhere else and your lousy farmers didn't have to fucking walk for ages to get to and from work.

Other than that they really need some better overview over resources and supplies, and more ways to decide what goes where.
It's a hassle to figure out what is being used or sold where and how much time/space it takes.

I don't know, Kalypso is low-key enough a developer that I can see them putting "medicial herbs" as a resource, complete with quotation marks. The game is just satirical enough that it wouldn't phase people too much unless they explicitly called attention to it.

I really hated that they got rid of choosing your flaws. T4 was ok in that pretty much everything had a good and bad to it but it was still way to easy to just choose all the good stats.
