Favourite concept I've come up with is Wricky, a Rocky Wrench who prefers mansonry to engineering. He fights you as a miniboss early in the game as a redo of the Lakilester concept, theyn joins you. His power is building walls in the overworld, which follow natural block physics and so fall apart if Mario runs into them or jumps at an angle. The walls fall apart over time in the overworld, but in battle they last until knocked to pieces by the enemy. Wricky can build just enough wall to cover the top or the front of the party but not both, meaning you can protect yourself against frontal or drop attacks for a few turns. Attacks with higher damage count as having a higher momentum and so knock the walls apart more easily.

Base Attack - Spannerang. Aimed manually like Yoshi's eggs; can hit enemies at any elevation, but can be blocked by intervening enemies
Starting FP Move - Mason Magic. Aforementioned move.
1st Promote Move - Tune up. Grants Mario 1 defence for three turns, and doubles the strength of successfull blocks (so by default Mario will reduce attacks by three with a block)
2nd Promote Move - Mega Mason. Can build bigger walls or multiple layers that can last more turns.

Besides that, a concept for a partner is a one-choice per save optional partner for a retired Koopatrol, Hammer Bro or Magikoopa. You can use the others in some sort of battle system like the Glitz Pit or PoHT but not regular play or story battles. Koopatrol has 2 defence, a charge attack and can summon a weak Koopatroll assistant for up to 3 turns depending on command success; using again refreshes countdown. Hammer Bro is really more of a mixed Weapon Bro, can throw hammers to shrink enemies, boomerangs to strike many or fireballs to burn. Magikoopa has a buff and debuff spell where you have to select panels quickly like the Gold Star power - so one ability covers every buff (power-up, defence-up, electrified turns, dodgy turns) and one every debuff (poison turns, soften etc.

Wouldn't too many partners be a mess to work with though? Enemy balance would be really wonky compared to other games. They'd need to have more HP/attack.
I think 2 or so partners at most is ok, but even then it can get complex for a PM RPG.

Yeah that's an important detail. The system in >>344559252 would have to have more challenging enemies, although having 6+ enemies on the pitch and seperate FP gauges for party members should also add a lot of challenge.

On a seperate note, that reminds of an idea I had for a reconciliation between SPM and the traditional games, by having Mario acquire additional Party Leads (himself being the default) in addition to party members. I just stuck to Luigi, Peach and Bowser, the same set from SPM. So you had one lead and one member active at all times. Party leads have different base and max stats, and level up seperately. You cannot switch them in battle.

Peach - 5 HP, 15 FP, 0 BP. Max HP 100, FP 250, BP 60.

Bowser - 15 HP, 5 FP, 0 BP. Comes with defense and spikes, but all moves cost FP. Max HP 250, FP 100, BP 60.

Luigi - 5 HP, 5 FP, 6 BP. Max HP 100, FP 100, BP 150.

After completing the game with Mario, you have the option of replaying with Peach as the starting Lead. Winning with her grants Bowser as a starting Lead, and Bowser grants Luigi. Finally winning with Luigi unlocks a Boss rush mode or something. There would be changes to dialog and such to give massive replay value.

It improved a lot of the combat and overral mechanics, and have better, more developed partners with lots of dialogue. But people feel that the level design is lacking as you have to backtrack a lot through chapters to pad the game.
The locations are still very interesting and different from what you'd see in a normal mario game.
