Personally, I think him not being gay makes him a stronger character because it makes his personal conflict less black and white. If he's actually gay, then his personal conflict is just "oh, I am gay and actually stereotypically so so I gotta act tough and not gay to hide that". If he's actually straight, then it beings in layers of him beginning to question his sexuality because he isn't interested in typically male things and finds himself falling for Naoto, who looks and dresses ambiguously to hide her gender, so he thinks he's falling for a boy and can't understand why.
I'm all for having gay characters if you can give me an interesting story and likeable character out of it but in this situation, there isn't any interesting directions for his character arc to go aside from the most predictable outcome. It could be taken several different ways.
On one hand, one could speculate that they wanted to censor him being actually gay because having a gay character would offend people, OR it could actually be the opposite. He could have been changed to straight because him being gay would offend homosexuals in the west. The thing about Japan and homosexuality is that while Japan doesn't dislike homosexuality, they often use it as the butt of jokes and Kanji is no exception to that. Had he been left as gay in the western release, his portrayal as a joke could have been seen as offensive by homosexuals.

When I've spoken about gender in this thread I focus on the social aspect.
It's the same reason why some people get friend zoned and such. They aren't socially manly.
