1. Vastly, vastly less distribution costs. It also means zero issues with inventory, which is a major issue with all physical products (print too much and you're left with pure wasted money, print to little and you lose sales, have to pay to keep stuff on shelves/in warehouses, etc).
2. Eliminates rating/censor issues. At least in the US, all ratings and such are entirely voluntary, not a matter of law. But a lot of retailers require it, and some will refuse to stock anything above a certain rating (Walmart was long been famous for refusing even R/M-rated for example). Sell direct digital and full control shifts back to the dev/publisher, no bullshit. Additionally, lots of places simply don't have retailers any longer within reasonable range (30 minutes or less) of customers.
3. Fewer and fewer people are physical-only, and those who are are often LE fags. Many don't care, and many (including myself) are digital only, at least again outside of LE.
All this has made the economics for physical shift for niche games. Niche depends on release numbers, keeping overhead low and long tails, which matches digital. So digital-only with maybe a high margin LE physical release will continue to be an ever more common model.
