so I just finished the first game, and I started playing LoG2, this game is pretty great, what do you think about it?
>>
It's shit.
>>
Uh oh, EO babbies will get mad at you now
>>
>>344532632
It's fucking amazing. Never had the energy to finish the first one but the Grimrock 2 hooked me like crack.
>>
>>344532632
Amazing game. Altho it could have used better race/class balance

Like, if you don't bring a minotaur barbarian with headhunter and an alchemist in your party, you're pretty much gimping yourself
>>
>>344532728
they definitely improved a lot from the first game

many enemies in 2 gets special attacks, leaping attacks, the skeleton warriors in the first game could be easily circle strafed, the skeleton of 2 I posted can quickly hit you even if you're on his right side
>>
Great games, wish they had a third.
>>
I've been thinking about getting the first game for a while now but the puzzles intimidate me. How difficult are they really? Because I'm fucking dumb.
>>
>>344533041
There's huge databases for two games you can google for if you get REALLY stuck in a puzzle or room, so it's not all that bad if you just wanna give up and keep progressing

Pretty much the same premise as the second game, tho. You're NOT gonna find all of the secrets in your first playthrough unless you're a walkthrough baby
>>
>>344532839
As much as I like the minotaur barbarian I have, I miss having a human warrior class type, the dexterity penalty of minotaurs can be annoying.

It's a fantastic game that heralds back to the era of uncasualized videogames that not enough people have played.

Seriously, the riddles, the puzzles, the secrets, I loved everything. Better yet, it was what a true sequel should be - an improvement in every sense from it's predecessor in both size and depth. Bought on-launch, and it didn't disappoint in the slightest. Full mod support too.

Damn shame they're doing something else instead of LoG III, there's literally nothing else in the present market like it.
>>
>>344533041
Honestly I like the first one more than the sequel, but both are great games.
I only used a guide for two parts in the first game, doesn't really ruin the game, especially if you are stuck on it.
Definitely get it if on sale.
>>
>>344533041
The puzzles aren't that cryptic, a lot of the puzzles of Grimrock games are about watching out for the walls, seeing if there's a brick with a button on it. Many things are given to you via notes, written hints on the wall and more.
>>
General reminder that if you don't use Old-School mode, you're a massive faggot.

>>344532632
> They made the crabs EVEN HARDER.

The absolute madmen. Good call.

>>344533041
The first one is flat-out not as good as the second in every sense. Still a very good game nonetheless.
>>
>>344533464
That's more in the first Grimrock. There's still some of those in the second, but there's a lot more emphasis in puzzles, riddles, and large-scale (e.g. multi-map) puzzles (e.g. the meteor).
>>
I really like the games, I think the combat needs a little work. I think it should be easier to attack, not easier combat. There are times where I feel like I'm just trying to mash through my attacks because there's no better way to do it. And it just feels really clunky to do with a mouse; but I'm not really sure how to fix it though.

If they make a 3rd game, I'd buy it.

I think if they made a game like LoG 1-2 but in a different setting (sci-fi or something) that would be awesome.
>>
>>344532632
its one playtrough game, once you know the secret its unreplayable. Even the ending suggest that.

Its kinda nice and sad when you finish it because no game will like this anymore
>>
>>344533971
True, but you can still try different parties setups. Also the dungeon editor is pretty good plus custom dungeons that might be good.
>>
How do you get into these games?
>>
>>344534204
Start playing. It will come.
>>
>>344534204

>>
I stopped at the Library in the castle with the snakemen rapists.

I thought my party was well leveled and geared at that point. I was wrong. Fuck that part.
>>
It's a really great sequel, seems to improve on LoG1 on pretty much every way. Especially the combat is a lot more interesting. I've yet to actually finish the game though because it's pretty damn tough at times. LoG is one of the best series that have come out recently and I don't really have anything bad to say about it.

I thought it was amazing, and a pretty great improvement on all fronts compared to 1. Exploration felt pretty good since it had a lot of variety. Bosses also made it a bit more interesting.

Minotaur + Bane + Berserker potion is OP as fuck, though.

Is there something like this, but with vendors? I like getting better loot with money.

>>344534693
If Almost Human doesn't have enough good ideas for a third game right now I think that it's better that they work on something else. LoG2 is so damn good because all the new ideas and gameplay changes actually work and make sense instead of just sticking to doing more of the same or watering down the previous title. This kind of approach is really rare these days, initially I couldn't even believe how everything was just so much... better in 2. But yeah I hope that they'll make a third game eventually too, or at least some other game in the same style.
>>
>>344535041

If I remember correctly I got all the gems that you need to go into the castle, I'm pretty sure I've been everywhere there is and I explored shit loads.

There was the Pyramid, the spooky graveyard, the underground mine and the poison forest swamp place.

Is there any other place to go other than the castle?
>>
>>344535058
This. Wizardry 8 is quite literally a series of dungeons with the occasional vendor or NPC.
>>
>>344535189
> Those fire elementals where the Rat King was.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.
>>
Installing it as we speak. I played it for like 20 minutes when it first came out, then I got into some other game and abandoned it.

What are some good builds/strategies, and general tips as to not get stuck and quit out of frustration?
>>
>>344532632
Not as good as 1. The open island just didn't have the same great atmosphere as the claustrophobic dungeons in the predecessor, where you were constantly climbing down deeper and deeper. Mechanically it's better, with more of pretty much everything, but there's also more bullshit. Firearms turned out to be shit, I got walled in by an air elemental with no way of killing it - as it only takes damage from 1 spell and 1 weapon in the entire game - and had to reload an earlier save, you're arbitrarily not allowed to fight underwater until you find one of the 2-3 tridents in the game, and the world map just meant a ton more backtracking.
>>
It's amazing how much better the sequel is. I hope they make a third sequel or a perhaps a completely new IP.
>>
>>344535376
create your own characters, I played the first game with the default option and I felt a bit of regret for not customizing the party for min-max effects, for example instectoid race has a lot of willpower and they make great magic users for so, Lizardman have a dexterity bonus so they make great rogues, minotaurs make great barbarians due to theior strength bonus and headhunter trait
>>
So we've got no idea what the devs are working on now? It's been a while since this came out.
>>
>>344535263
FYI, don't just get enough gems to go into the castle. Get all the power gems because that unlocks a final dungeon and a superfinal boss. Also indicates that you've explored most everything.

If memory serves, if by 'underground mine' you're referring to the area near where the Rat King is that's filled with spiders and death, and you covered the connecting areas (catacombs, zombieworld with gigantic deathmachines roaming around, sewers/hamlet, the archives/lexiconary/ruins, etc.), I think that's it. There should be a bunch of puzzles that you can still do for loot, e.g. the meteor puzzle, but really, just git gud.

I had a shitty party because I brought along a farmer in a full party who was dead weight for the entire game. Ratling rogue and alchemist made up for it though, even though the only people who did damage were my rogue and my mage. Still had zero issue in Castle Nex, and the boss fight was a pushover. Now, the supersekrit final boss is fuckimpossible and took me months of on-off trying to beat.

>>344535728

It sounds lame, but I think that melee attacks should be automatic. The player should focus on when and if using special attacks.

Wait for Cleveland Mark Blakemore to release Grimoire :^)

Of course you may also play enormous amount of blobbers from 80's and 90's - I'd suggest going through Wizardry 6-7-8 with save imports, Might and Magic(I like 3, 4 and 5 the most but majority of people love 6), and if you want games with similar combat to grimrock - Dungeon Master, Lands of Lore and Eye of the Beholder
>>
>>344535838

On the front row I had a magic-knight bug man and barbarian lizardman. In the back row I had a human farmer female that used magic and a headhunter minotaur that specialized in throwing. By far the biggest asset to the team was the Minotaur until I managed to feed the farmer enough to dwarf the rest in levels.
>>
Was there any real benefit to using guns? The fixed damage wasn't very good for most of the game, and the cannon basically required stripping my gunner if I didnt want him to be overencumbered
>>
>>344537184
also I guess people don't exactly go dagger rogue in late/endgame since the critical skill maxed allows you to backstab with any weapon, right?
>>
>>344537436
Firearms are shit, even if you go alchemist with the no jamming perk. Missile and throwing weapons are way better based solely on the fact you can retrieve your ammo after shooting and that they will NEVER malfunction
>>
>>344532632
I thought the first one was better. 2's split up level design made the game weaker as the game world was split into many smaller areas with little interplay rather than the big complex floors of the first game, and balancing the whole game for being able to access several different areas at any one time meant the early game was difficult and the late game was far too easy.
Also, the final boss and true final boss of 2 were both complete garbage compared to the final boss of 1.
>>
>>344537464
It depends on the stat focus of your rogue. If you go dex, most of the good weapons you find based on that stat will be classed as daggers anyway, so that's what you're gonna be using. The "any weapon" deal would be for str focused characters wielding light weapons
>>
>>344537436
I heard they were shit, so I just made my chemist a thrower, the str is nice for carrying purposes anyway
>>
>>344533041
The puzzles are mostly good but both games have several that go full retard in either how esoteric they are or how misleading they are.
The pyramid entrance in 2 is a good example of the latter.

I'll agree with this I guess. I didn't like the cube very much, but the real final boss of 2 is poorly made enough that you're far better off just trying to faceroll it instead of actually trying to fight it.

There's 4 more shiny gems than you need to make the 4 elemental essences. Enough spares to make a fifth one. Huge spoilers ahead

When you place the 4 essences and open up the castle Nex gates, go through it, kill the final boss, but instead of going through to the ending, backtrack and get out. The gem it drops plus the other 3 you can find in the pyramid, desert and other secret areas will craft a fifth essence
You do this in a temple you can enter by standing in the center of the castle courtyard, where you place the 4 essences, and having any character cast a spell using the central rune in the grid
>>
I heard it was great so I tried it but its just way too slow paced for me. I find searching walls and such for tiny hidden buttons to be terribly tedious and the odd "you can only move on squares" movement felt very unnatural. I thought it was going to be more like the Might and Magic series but it seems like its almost a completely different genre.

Why are most enemies in most games immune to poison?

And why is earth magic never about physical damage? Poison is nature magic. Earth magic should be about big rocks, earthquakes and gravity.
>>
Grimrock 2 was really fucking good. My only qualm with it is not actually a complaint at all, but just that sometimes the puzzles were really god damned hard. Mostly the open-world puzzles. There's a TON of loot that you could easily miss.

I liked the "gambling" you had to do on which weapon forcefields to unlock.

Felt really good finally beating the "true" boss.

I think my biggest complaint is that there just isn't any incentive to play again, since I've seen it all.

Misplay? With the air elemental? I was in the spike maze, moved to a safe square to fight it, and realized only then that it was unkillable. There's no other enemy in the game that works that way, and there's no way of knowing that's how it works before you've fought it once. It's just bad design, and the fact that you're defending it makes me question everything you have to say.

I loved the first, still greatly enjoyed the second, and I'm absolutely looking forward to the sequel. But that doesn't magically fix the problems that are there.

>>
LoG is underrated as fuck. Pretty happy we have a thread on these games.
>>
>>344546221
A solo run as a ratman alchemist in LOG2 is pretty good.

You can turn him into a fucking beast. All those permanent stat boosting potions along with that mutation trait. He'll become a demigod.

I did this with an alchemist who chugged Bear Potions and chucked bombs to get by.

Minotaurs were best at pretty much everything, especially as rangers.

Alchemy needs to be nerfed in LoG3 but I kind of don't want them to do it. Infinite stat potions was pretty great.

How did you get infinite? I assume you're being hyperbolic and just talking about the farmer ability to grow them. Even with that +1 to a stat doesn't really do much, and you have 4 characters. I don't think it needs to be nerfed.

It's infinite because you replicate crystal flowers and other herbs infinitely. It's not fast, never said it was fast. But not only can they dupe potions, they make better mages than any of the mage classes.

A team of three alchemists can all feed their stat potions into a single guy, preferably a farmer, to make a super powered man. Might try that sometime. An eating contest run.

I'm not that into DM style games but Grimrock 2 was fantastic. Even despite the combat system there was enough interesting map design, puzzles, secrets and exploration to make it a fun adventure.
It's a damn shame it was such a flop.

What are the devs up to now? Grimrock 3?

It's that theoretically the alchemist has infinite potential that can dwarf almost every class other than farmer and barbarian. Perhaps the best solution is to buff magic classes and rangers. A wizards +2 willpower doesn't mean much when an alchemist will have access to stat boosts every hour or two with no limit.

Also who here is going to skip adding a ranger to their party in Grimrock 3? I've been disappointed by them for two games now.
>>
>>344548851
>it was such a flop.
It was? The game is easily in my favorite games of whatever year it came out.
Personally I like that combat style and I'm not bothered by the magic casting system although it is hell to have more than one spellcaster in combat, so I'm biaised, but the game is just really solid- great level design, puzzles, atmosphere, and really solid graphic style. The game is also really smooth, it runs perfectly (for me anyway) and that's more than lots of game can say now.
>>
>>344532632
I think it's an amazing game

It's really sad that the developers never delivered on their modding tools promise, the community died way too soon because they never released them

They aren't, humans are the worst race since all they get is a bonus to exp gained and one extra skillpoint (which is sort of useful if you want to play with a farmer)

The stats and traits the other races get are much better, and on top of that ratlings, lizards and insectoids get bonus stats from eating specific foods
>>
>>344548851

I heard it sold more than the original.

However, it doesn't help that the game had ZERO marketing or hype behind it. I wasn't the release date revealed like 3 weeks before it launched?

Either way, it was a great game. My personal GOTY 2014, at least.

Just use a mapped controller system, like XPadder or the Steam controller. With the latter, you can map each attack (including magic combinations) to a region of one of the touch pads (or both, do whatever you want with it really). It works great for so many other games, too. It's worth the $30 or $40.

>>

Their twitter and developer blog hasn't been active for a year, typing their company name in Google fails to bring up their website, and their website and forum have had downtime recently without an update, just the server going down, their game failed to win that mobile competition they were hyped about, and a january post by the developer said "the team isnt working on a project", however "he is working on an engine". This separation of team and the actual forum admin, and that they aren't working on a project after the iPhone port, means they probably suffered from the bad Grimrock 2 sales.

This is just me reading clues though, hopefully they announce something this year, but they've been silent for months, and officially silent for over a year.

We don't know how much it sold on GoG.

Also I think it's normal for developers to go silent after they've done a game, they don't want to spoil whatever they're doing.

Games only get hinted at and talked by devs when they're well into development. Rockstar is not talking about GTA VI, what setting it will be and such, for example.

Has there ever been a mod that turns LoG into a turn-based game? That's my only and my biggest gripe with it. I spent way too much time looking at the bottom left, drawing spells, while I'm maneuvering around an enemy. It's a pity, actually, because both games are really beautiful, as a player you kind of miss a surprisingly huge amount of that though.

They loath that game with a passion and think it's the Call of Duty equivalent of RPGs. They wanted their BG3 with shitty rolling for stats during character creation, kiting enemies around your group, buffing a shitton of buffs before each fight, and the utterly generic and bland D&D setting and mechanics.

They didn't get that, so they've been throwing a hissy fit for the last year and a half.

Unless they went absolutely nuts it would have been impossible to go bankrupt LoG 2 having decent sales for a niche game + the massive buffer from the original.

I'm playing EO4 as my first one and have decided around level 20ish that I want to change my sniper out for a nightseeker because the sniper binds don't seem to apply very reliably at all.

What is the proper way to quickly catch a character up in XP or am I screwed or retarded or both?
Also does level difference between the character and enemy affect stat ailment application (both chance and duration)?

By the way, if you guys want a clunky, but still surprisingly interesting, alternative to Grimrock 2, there's a game on Steam called Fall of the Dungeon Guardians which I thought was just a cheap knockoff (and it is in some ways), but has pseudo-turn-based (Realtime w/ Pause) combat and actual MMO-style hotbars for each party's skills as well as MMO stye tank/DPS/healer classes, with Grimrock-style puzzles and shit that are actually not bad.
