Seiken Densetsu 3 is my favorite one. Hawk/Lise/Kevin was who I always chose.

I played that game co-op with my friend. It was basically SoM with better combat and LoM's artstyle. It was pretty great, but it still had some problems that SoM had. For example, the magic was overpowered and a hassle to use when it could have been mapped to a shortcut using L and R.

Not too much of it. I remember brutally heart-wrenching sad music, really nice gameplay and a frustrating stupid AI. It was a lot of fun and I should probably get back to it.
The only game I ever regret buying. I had some spare cash in the ps store and I decided "lets try an rpg" I had heard of a game with mana on the title. I confused it somehow with secret of mana. I tried getting into the game but I just couldn't its way too boring.

It's probably the most different of all the Mana games, not that that means much when they're all pretty different anyway. I always remember the incredibly stupid AI companions who were still really helpful somehow. I think there may have been one companion who you could buy and sell from, which was insanely useful. I wish more games did that, honestly.

3 would be nearly perfect but the game doesn't really explain it's system well enough (and by that I mean doesn't explain it at all). So you either look up Dark/Light stuff for each character and the best stat to put in and destroy everything in your path or go in blind and most likely need to grind like mad to make up your shitty stats.

Mana doesn't play like any FF game. They are more like Zelda in action with levels. And Secret is considered the best while Final Fantasy Adventure (they used it for marketing) has a nice remake on Vita.

If you really like topdown Zelda games, play the original Seiken Densetsu/Final Fantasy Adventure. It's a GameBoy game, so it's obviously going to be basic, but part of the charm lies in its simplicity.
In my opinion though, the best place to start is probably with Seiken Densetsu 3. It may not be the best game, but I think it gives a broad view of how most games play. Secret of Mana is also decent, but I think SD3 does everything better.
Afterwards, or instead of, you might want to try Legend of Mana. It's different in many regards, but combat and world are very similar. I don't think the gameplay is what draws people to liking LoM, and you'll see a lot of fans praising its comfiness and unorthodox storytelling and progress, but I think those are valid points too.
For both of these games you might want to look up some guides regarding the systems present, because they're poorly explained and can sometimes mess with the enjoyment of the game.
