Remember, most games in the old days were 1-3 hours long on the NES, 4-7 hours long on the SNES, and maybe 10 hours long, if you were really lucky, on the N64. Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid can be beaten in under 8 hours.Virtual Boy brings down the average, too :^)

Yeah, you're missing out on some pretty interesting episodes. I picked up the manga back in its first volume because the chapters we so light and easy to read in ~5 minutes. It's hard to believe how far it's come, even catapulting Umaru into meme-dom.
And TSF is indeed best girl. She actually has a lot of character to her. I like her development arc to her brother paralleling with Umaru's development with Taihei. Umaru isn't a complete cunt in the manga, so TSF easily rubs off on her and makes her realize that she's been selfish, and Umaru reforms herself.

The anime definitely does not do Umaru justice. Even I cringed at how annoying she was portrayed. All the other girls are just fine, though. It, at the very least, spaces out the 20 or so different sub-plots going on throughout the series. You'll rarely ever have to deal with Komaru more than 2 chapters in a row, whereas in the anime, they slap 30 chapters worth of Komaru into 2 episodes, leaving people with a bad taste in their mouths. It's much more varied in the content it shows.
In the anime, Umaru is the main character. In the manga, Umaru and Taihei get roughly equal screentime.
