Hey /v/, in need of some advice. Been trying to get into mgr revengeance, but I'm god awful at it. Can't party to save my life and cannot understand combos. I'm also shit at fighting games. Does anyone else have a similar problem?

You have a combo list in the help menu. Take note of those.
You parry by hitting the control stick in a direction and pressing attack at the same time.
Pretend it's a jump attack in Dark Souls but with Square instead of R2.
You have a huge parry window so just keep practicing that.
All you can do is keep playing and get good at that point.

MGR is kinda an awful entry into the genre
it gets a lot of fundamental plainly wrong (camera, lock on even fucking movement is fundamentally broken) and it (tries to) teach you skills that have no application in other games (blade mode QTE cutting, constant baiting of enemies instead of actually controlling the battlefield)
play DMC3/4, Bayonetta 1/2 even Ninja Gaiden over it

don't worry about that move list. seriously, it's not worth it
when you get an opportunity to wail on a dude, just press the attack buttons however you want
buy offensive defensive and learn the timings for that and your parry and you should be good

Camera is fine. Lock on is pointless on anything that isn't a boss.
And having unique game mechanics like cutting enemies is bad now?

of course it's easier -- it's designed to pander to MGS and non-action games fans audience and succeeds at it so hard it is by far the most populay platinum game
However you won't be any better for completing this game, there is a very shallow pool of skills that the game *might* teach if you want to git better and but those will be skills that are only applicable to that game and don't raise your general awareness of the common mechanics of the genre
it's a fun sideshow sure but a bad example to start your journey on
