They do it because Smash players are literally autistic, the GCN controller adapters have absolutely no use other than Smash because nobody with half a brain is going to want to use that abomination for actual video games. First thing I did when the Wii came out was get a Classic Controller so I could have a non-retarded control scheme.

That's how I always held it, yeah. You want to use the control stick for most games, so you hold it like that and basically ignore the left side of the controller.

for what I barely remember you was never (or almost never) forced to use all buttoins, stick and that cursor "+" (or how do you call it In english). Whenever you wanted to use the stick you may just hold middle sticked part in one hand and buttons (or that "+" if leftie) in other. I was kid back then, I had small hands, tho, so mayby it wasn't as hard as I remeber.

Basically every game either used the stick or it used the Dpad. I think I recall a couple games using them both for different types of gameplay though.

I'm thinking about taking out my old N64 but the controller's analouge stick was grinded into dust and now I'm thinking about buying a controller
The mini pad, alpha 64 and super pad plus look decent
