DS4 is the best controller I've ever used. I like the handgrips more than any other controller, GCN comes close. The light is convenient in my dark game room, the memepad is convenient in FFXIV and random other things, all the buttons feel great, the triggers are GOAT, the sticks are nice and responsive and the battery is great. I charge it for like 10 minutes and it lasts for at least 8+ hours. The charge time is really fast.. it's awesome.

In terms of comfort, I'd say Wiimote & Nunchuck, even though it's not really useful for most games.
xbox one is most comfy. best feel, best build quality, easiest to use on pc.

DS3 is mediocre, has good deadzones, but it shit for everything else and only baby hands pretend it's good. For shooters on PS3 I actually use a xbox 360 adapter because I cannot play a shooter at all with a DS3 on ps3.

WiiU gamepad. I've beaten the shit outta it playing splatoon for the past year. Quality shit. However, my launch DS4 had the analog stick cover tearing so I got rid of it, worried it'd eventually get the sticky should button issue, and got a newer model. Still feels fragile though.

Wii U Pro, in all honesty. Every Dualshock I've used just feels wrong somehow, like they're made for people with tiny hands, and while the Xbox controllers are great (360 is king) the Pro is just better on a lot of levels. It's lighter, has a better d-pad, and that 80-hour battery life is a little too good to give up. The only gripes I have with it are that the surface picks up fingerprints and smudges like a magnet, and the triggers are digital instead of analog, which really only matters for very few games anyway. I got an adapter for mine earlier this week, been playing Crypt of the Necrodancer and Mark of the Ninja on it, shit's great.
Steam controller looks like garbage and the Gamecube controller is some sort of Fisher-Price abortion. Fuck that controller.

But if you insist on moving your hand, try sliding your hand so that your upper right palm rests on the right trigger and you can move the left stick and right stick with just one hand, giving you a full hand for the dpad.
I prefer the Dualshock 4. Comfy sticks, good D pad, and great buttons.

Steam Controller is pretty damn comfy, but the bumpers are awkward to reach.
Xbone is obviously very similar to the 360, but I don't like the bumpers or the sharp edges on the sticks.
Gamecube Controller. The face buttons are just too good. It makes it obvious which button should be the main action button, which somehow is a thing game developers in 2016 struggle to make consistent. It also allows for faster switching between buttons and/or holding of multiple buttons at the same time. On controllers with diamond layouts, holding any 2 opposite buttons is going to be difficult without hitting the other buttons, unless they space the buttons out fairly far in which case it becomes difficult to hold adjacent buttons. For the gamecube layout this really only happens between the B button and the X and Y buttons.
There could certainly be improvements if they were to recreate the design today. A more standard set of digital and analog triggers, instead of the wierd, tiny Z button. A better, larger C-stick and D-pad. But in all honesty those face buttons > anything else for me. I guess they've gone back to the diamond shape because it looks sleeker and more symmetrical when you're trying to show controller porn in E3 videos, but what the gamecube had was a damned smart evolution.

What the fuck? No. The only genre you use the right stick more (and even then at pretty comparable levels) is shooters, first and third. All other genres use face buttons more. Platformers as you said, but also action, adventure, fighting and racing if you don't have expensive genre-specific controllers, RPGs, puzzle, etc.
I use X360 right now for emulation which is fine, but the sticks keep getting sticky which is fucking annoying, never had that happen with Nintendo controllers.
I honestly think the steam controller is the best, but it's sort of an unfair comparison.
I was really torn on the face button placement at first, but it's actually superbly easy to get used to. It's a really, really big controller, and the shape of the arms on it is kind of awkward, although not uncomfortable.
I just fucking adore it because it has an endless amount of customization software-side and that makes my autism run wild. It's to the point that, despite having about 5 grand put into my battlestation and about 500 of that put into a custom keyboard and g502, I never use them in single-player games unless it's first-person.
