Hub based mission selectors.
>>
If they still call it an mmo, in the current year, then yeah. huge red flag already. auto-avoid.

It's just painfully obvious that they want to make something that sells well. If they even cared at all or were serious about ANYTHINg, they'd at least refrain from calling it a fucking "MMO."

Literally nobody plays "mmo." Just make an mmo and market it as something else, don't ever mention that it is an mmo.

Also don't be an asian dev.

linear progression (pic related) so it doesn't matter how pretty any of the maps are if they're just something you tackle one by one and never visit again, and being too reliant on quests for leveling up which makes it hard to group up with anyone else that's not on the same part of the quest line.

this game really looks fantastic but they managed to screw everything else up.

They've came a long way since release. If you haven't played it yet, wait until fall when One Tamriel will be released. By that time it's basically Oblivion Online where you can fuck off to whatever part of the map you want at any time since everyone will be scaled, say fuck the mainquest and become the world's greatest teacup thief.

Black Desert was okay to level up in, and the crafting can be a decent timekill, but there's literally no endgame. In most MMOs the endgame is that you make a shitload of money to buy armor/crafting mats to get the best gear to do the hardest raids.

In Black Desert you can go "I have a lot of money."

That's it. It has no purpose.
>>
>no holy trinity

The second devs write off the holy trinity in flavor of some stupid hybrid system, it's an insta-drop.

1. Consensual PVP.

My ideal MMO is set in an open world with no level restrictions on zones.

>single faction
>no levels or experience, instead, certificates and qualifications based on things you have done and training programs you have completed that allow you to do different things during world events
>game follows server-wide progression of events based on a story line in which players assume different roles in real time battles based on their class and training qualifications
>once event is over, it's over forever
>expansions and updates build upon the world story
>maps and topography change based upon world events
>new players learn history of the game
>all zones open to all players, equipment makes a much smaller difference in power as it does in current MMOs
>between world events, follow smaller storylines that tie into word events if you've done them
>no tab targetting
>no instances or dungeons
>no teleporting around the world. Walk. Get a vehicle.
>>
>>344482681
what do you think of TERA?
it's a long download so I'd like to hear some peoples opinions to see if I would try it
>>
>>344482891
Imagine a story that makes no sense that you get pushed through for leveling
A pretty decent look environment
Crosshair combat
With an "endgame" that is solid "pray to RNG the enchanting dust makes your gear to +11 this time"
>>
>>344482831
Grinding for equipment. There should be a better system, for example where you get gear by killing the shit out of other players.
>>
>>344479708
I wanted to try this game out but I can't even get it to launch.
>>
>>344482891
The PVP was fun. The way healers work is you shit out little balls of HP that players run over (in addition to traditional healing spells) which I thought was interesting. The graphics were great when it was new, okay now. Cash Shop is convenient, but not absolutely necessary, but most of the updates are costume bullshit that have nothing to do with the game (schoolgirl outfits, animal onesies, that kind of bullshit). Overall there just wasn't enough to distinguish it from everything else, so I quit. A couple of my friends still get on every century or so.
>>
>>344479708
i think that mmorpg those days don't have any place anymore like they did in the past. people don't want causal non creative gameplay anymore.
they want their brain being stimulated and challenges like in dark souls series any many many other games

bye bye mmorpg? unless they improve combat i just don't see them that.. attractive.

Waste of time, worst than phone games.
>>

Because the Dark Zone went so well. All you do when you make PVP the only option for ideal endgame is making the inevitable slew of BR hax programs focus on the PVP instead of harmlessly raping the econ in PVE.

If you are going to bait, at least spell shit correctly and use proper grammar.
>>
>>344482884

To appeal to a wider audience and round out the game, have domestic zones where players can create their own homes and have social story lines and interpersonal conflicts
>>
>>344482891
Combat isn't too bad but endgame requires praying to rngesus for enchanting success and putting up with deleted/recycled content with the odd new dungeon or two and the occasional new race/gender locked class

>>344483094
That's still possible. It's just that the very very best weapons are gained at a single-player raid/trial.

Red Flag One

>Existing playerbase is extremely hostile to new players

Red Flag 2

>Existing Playerbase is extremely friendly to new players to the point of being creepy (Usually this occurs when MMO's are beginning to die, so older players hang around starting areas helping newbies in the hopes they'll stick it around because they'll think the community is awesome).
>>
>>344483632
The problem with player owned housing is there isn't a lack of real estate, so it doesn't feel like you're accomplishing anything through ownership.

The closest I've ever seen to fixing this is actually Minecraft private servers but that has it's own world of autistic issues.

Voice acting. They basically always force you into these cutscene like things every time you try to pick up a quest. Example being Guild Wars 2

Casting abilities makes you lose control of your character, so you're stuck in the animation until it finishes. Example being Tera.

Basically anything that makes you lose control of your character makes the game bad. Floaty control makes it feel awkward too, like in GW2 there's a slight delay when you switch from running to either side to the other that is horrible. WoW might not be amazing, but you basically had 100% control of your character, which felt really good.

If the companies feel like they have to implement voice acting they should make it so that you pick up the quests in the same way as in WoW, but when pressing the quest and after accepting it if you stay in the vicinity of the quest giver you should hear the VA.

Oh and big hitbox thingys like in Wildstar are shit too, looks too ugly.
>>
>>344484014
I disagree about ARR. I didn't start playing until a while after the first expansion, and as long as I didn't beg my guild (random people recruiting in a town) to show me where everything was/help me finish everything nobody inherently hated noobies.

Finding groups for Ifrit/Titan/etc on not-super-hard was annoying, sure.

>Korean

So much this. It's all f2p cashop gambling grindfests with shitty gameplay, potential malware, and artstyles that would make a pedo uncomfortable.

>>344482345
It's a guarantee that the game has really REALLY grindy shitastic mechanics to 'encourage' (read force), you to pay ridiculous amounts of money in the ingame cashops if you ever want to be competitive or level quickly. Limits on xp gains, chat, trading, auction house, gold caps, etc. Many of them flat out let you buy gear that is unobtainable otherwise and superior to all other gear.

Oh, and because it's f2p, if they don't HEAVILY lock down accounts that aren't paying stuff, it's absolutely filled with cheaters, and bots.

It's pretty common to kick people from dungeons if they don't have heirloom gear.

Why has no MMO managed to copy WoW's perfect controls? They seem perfectly fine in copying everything else, but when it comes to the one thing WoW does better than anything else they fail miserably.

I must have picked the wrong day then.
I asked two questions in a general chat, one being about the level when I could change jobs, the other being about crafting jobs, and the immediate response was "Go the fuck away noob, why the fuck are you playing if you can't figure it out on your own." Instead of a simple "Level 15 for job change"
>>

Are there any modern High fantasy MMOs? Preferably with some slow combat. I'm so sick of every MMO being generic hybrid action-esque shit. I just want to do some quests and relax with some nice adventuring.
>>
>>344484405
Really?
Low level dungeons can basically be two manned if heirlooms were involved when I quit, the other three just had to not die and it was over in minutes.
>>
>>344484405
Most bullshit thing I have ever read.

Never been kicked in the lower level dungeons for not having heirloom gear.

If you want to talk shit about heirlooms, talk about how those who don the heirlooms just rush the dungeon because they think they can solo it. (majority of the time they can, it just ruins the progression and 'immersion' of things)

Dungeon Fighter Online was good before they nuked the first 55 levels worth of dungeons and replaced it with garbage. Granted, you can level past them in a week, but they're still garbage.

End game is still fantastic, 10/10. It's just that they cut out the journey and replaced it with a bland car trip through the Mojave.

Please never mention them again, this triggers me so bad.

You would have to spend LITERALLY thousands of dollars on their games to be able to keep up with the top pvpers in their games
>>
Make it like Runescape. There's reasons for everyone to be at any part of the map. High levels still have a ton of reasons to visit Varrock or Lumbridge, and low levels have incentive to travel to Ardougne.

It makes everything more interesting, it makes your leveling path unique, and you aren't pressured into doing dailies to grind exp. If you get tired of leveling up combat, you can level up woodcutting, or thievery.

Runescape was literally perfect. Literally.
>>
>>344484467
Why is Gimp so much worse than photoshop? Gimp would be amazing if they just copied photoshop's UI.

The answer is money. Blizzard has thrown tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars at their interface. They continuously collect metadata about how the UI is used and refine it. All major companies that have had lasting impacts in software markets do this. Microsoft does it. AutoDesk does it. Adobe does it. Blizzard does it.

You can copy the interface appearance, but it's difficult to copy the seamless way things flow, and how there's minor audio and visual cues for mousing over stuff, using abilities, or noting proc effects. They can't copy how everything has a tactile sensation due to all the feedback, even though you aren't literally touching it.

I'd complain except that early game sucked dick for so many reasons:
ghent, not having your full kit when so much depended on it, ghent inverted waterfall, ghent, tower of death for awakening, ghent, spending a full day on spider caves, ghent.

This is one of the things I liked about Guild Wars 1. The main character was important, but you were an accessory helping out the 'named' characters for the most part.

Explaining it's your first time through an endgame raid is different from wanting to know levels for things like jobchange. The game generates a quest that tells you when it's time for that, there is no reason you need to know it except you don't feel like looking it up.

Having another person who understands the meta for a boss helps the community.

See the difference?

There's a difference between being with other people and being forced to interact with them. I like playing with other people around and being able to interact with them if I choose to. Just because I like seeing people in my city or when I'm out questing doesn't mean I want to party with them or join a guild. One is more "intimate" than the other. I was always in a guild when I played WoW and I was usually pretty social, but I'm still autistic enough to see where this guy is coming from.

But about a week into launch they announced a new server "exclusively for South American users, as per forum discussions."

Those forum discussions were the usual huehuehue BR bullshit.

GW1 didn't have mounts even when you couldn't teleport everywhere. movement speed is part of the build mechanics. it's one of the few examples where they actually followed the original game's philosophy. i'm glad mountfags got btfo, stay in wow

>>
>>344488783
I don't understand the hate mounts get at all. I do agree that flying mounts ruin the depth and immersion of it all but at least Blizzard finally got up and said "fine we will make it so you can't have flying until mid-expansion and give you a long tedious unlock for flying mounts"
>>
There are some good sandbox'ish mmos coming, hopefully. As it stands now there isn't a lot out there. It's a meme but a living world is more important than good gameplay (not saying the gameplay should be bad), and community trumps everything else. There isn't anything immersive about lobby based dungeon crawling.
ESO is garbage.
BDO is even more garbage, anyone saying it's a sandbox is not a smart person.
Retail WoW has been dateraping it's playerbase for quite some time.
FF is where weebs and gaylords who can't handle being ganked go, the good news is they can rub one out between attacks.
If you are not playing:
>vanilla WoW somewhere
>UO private shards
>swgemu
>uthgarde
>return of reckoning
>project gorgon
>darkfall new dawn
>gloria victis or life is feudal
>EVE
then you don't even really want to play an mmo.

Well, when I say proper mabinogi 2 I kinda wanted to imply we'd have something like better graphics (or at least something similar to Peria Chronicles) better servers and so on, just basically Mabinogi but actually updated in everything.

Good to know at least I wasn't the only one to have that feeling, I'm pretty sure most other Mabinogi players had a large enough backlash to it that it got canceled.

Vindictus is exceptional because it actually has good combat (seriously) and gives the player the tools to craft supreme waifu material.

Apart from those things, Vindictus still suffers from typical F2P shill mechanics like daily raids, or the atrocious weapon smithing system.

If you just want a amalgamation of minigames without interacting with people then you could play wario

I have a question, and a follow up one. Post-WoW has there ever been an MMO where the gameplay isn't restricted to hotbars and cooldowns? And if not, why not? An MMO with a more open combat system would be amazing.

I know there have been MMOFPSes like Destiny and shit, but has there ever been any MMO with a free and open combat system which doesn't boil down to memorizing who to tab to and what your cooldowns are?
