If it happens, a new timeline with new characters would be preferable. There's no point in sticking around with the current story. Metal Gear needs to just start over while retaining its basic premise. More prequels or sequels is a terrible idea, and remakes are an even worse idea.
Or the series should just fucking end, but I don't think that will happen.
The same thing the Next Castlevania, Zone of the Enders, Silent Hill, Contra and Suikoden will be about.

Konami already announced that mgs6 development was underway with the destruction of Kojima Studios LA.
I hope it bridges the MGS universe and the Zone of the Enders universe.I've never played Zone of the Enders but I think it would be pretty cool.

I just can't see them doing anything meaningful with the franchise anymore. All major threads have been closed so well that I can't see how even a prelude could work. I mean, at least MGS3 told us a lot of interesting stuff about relevant characters, but is there really anyone left that we need to know more about?
The Boss is more or less the only one I can think about, but I really can't see anything meaningful that they could tell us about her anymore.

Kojima, in an interview at the time of MGS4, stated that he believed MGS5 would be a new continuity with new characters. I think the core premise of Metal Gear (a lone agent in enemy territory with a story with conspiratorial spice) is pretty flexible and could be taken in a lot of different directions.
