It took a standard formula that everyone generally enjoyed, added final fantasy charm and production value, and maintains one of the most frequent content release schedules for an mmo. Its pretty simple.

I don't get the customization argument, majority of the time, in PVE games, even with custom choices, it always ends up an illusion because one path is clearly better than the others like in rift. The only time it really works is in games that a constantly changing meta because it's pvp focused like guild wars.
