VLR set up too much stuff that ZTD was obligated to follow up on, and it didn't even get to all of it. 999 and VLR worked great because they were mostly self-contained, so it didn't help that ZTD had 5 familiar returning characters, the entire basis for why these characters are there, and about 10 dangling plot threads that we assumed would be tied up. Having the mysteries not be mysteries is no fun.

The animation QUALITY and detached third-person cutscene perspectivelol Delta cameraskept me from getting immersed in the actual story.
Trying to split the difference between "series finale" and "casual entry to the series" means we got plot points from 999/VLR brought up without actually resolving them beyondDelta's "timeline shift none of that even matters now, haha motives".
Meanwhile the third of the game spent with the new characters Eric and Mira fails to give them anything in the way of a meaningful character arc. Seriously, their purpose in the story is to get in the fucking way and cause bloody chaos right up until "Oh we can jump along with you to the good end because ~quantum effects~, thanks friends"

Not to forget Yu-No: The Girl who Chants Love at the Edge of the World. That game's the first ever VN to include a built-in interactive Flowchart that you can travel around in. The game is for the old 1996 PC98 but there's the Windows 2011 port of it that includes bonuses.

This is the one. This is the mistake. That should never have been a thing. Never. This is the fucking finale to a story heavy game, of course you should be expected to play the previous ones before it.
And as such, we can tie everything together in the plot perfectly fine, because we know that you've already seen the plot of the previous titles. We can take it further and make it a truly epic finish.

The segment's are fine, but honestly moving away from a text presentation severely limited the ability to convey the plot with any form of subtlety whatsoever. Hence the memes. Fragments were a pretty good idea, though, and factor slightly into the story later.

So what did 1904 Phi go on to do?
I feel most people who followed the series are disappointed at ZTD due to how they handled Espers and the more fictional aspect of the game.
In 999 it was handled in a unique way, with the explaining of the Morphogenetic Field through myths, tales, and rumors that the various characters have heard of (Pic Related).
No one has the power to access the Morphogenetic Field on the fly, but people do have the inhibited trait to access it that can be awoken through certain means (that's why Ace did the Nonary Game and then Akane as well).
It is also implied that the Morphogenetic Field is the realm outside of the game, and you are the means that the info is transferred through, which adds more depth to the mechanics of Junpei talking to Akane and remembering what he did without just saying "That's how it is".
VLR also followed this to a degree, with Schrodinger's Cat and the Prisoner's Dilemma, but when they introduced the concept of "jumping" to separate timelines as a new power Espers have, that's when the games went more into the realm of "magic" than odd science fiction.
ZTD fully embraced the idea of "jumping" through the concept of SHIFTing, which was generally accepted by everyone in the game in the end to be just a power everyone has and can abuse through putting their lives in danger. Now everyone's a magical wizard that can send their consciousnesses to whatever timeline they desire.
I liked VLR a lot, don't get me wrong, it used the idea of jumping your consciousness sparsely, as if it was only something you should and could do once in a blue moon, but ZTD ran that into the ground.

Just finished every ending in 999 and holy shit, you guys weren't kidding this series is already shaping up to be cool as shit, going on to VLR now, I saw the true ending already, however I guess seeing all the other endings is kind of the point of the game.

I didn't really mind VLR's more "magical" approach by adding the ability to jump between timelines because the game took itself less seriously and was less gruesome than 999. It's also given limitations and used liberally like you said, which helped me suspend my disbelief.

Nigga, aint nobody's calling the game perfect. Probably most people here think its the worst in the series. It's just that intentionally omitting bits of dialogue (like the name) or camera angles are just as legit as ignoring reflections, never touching your own face, or not mentioning Superman jumping abilities
