You're not wrong, even if they call it other things in different games. There's always just a "magic" projectile with no element attached to it. Magic bolt is a common one.

If a game only has Fire/Earth/Wind/Water, where would non-elemental magic come into play?

This needs to be a thing more often. Maybe a secret end-game thing, but I see no good reason for a full HP heal when Cure 3 or its equivalent does the same thing, because it's so damn rare that a unit ever hits 9999 HP naturally.

Dragon's Dogma got holy magic right - does insane damage to undead and feasible damage to everything else, and heals the user upon damaging enemies. Yet dark magic and the Necromancy spell still suck ass.

At least Paladins make excellent tanks in most games. Necromancers are just kinda there.

Dark magic was obviously made for combos.
when shooting normal attacks they dawdle for a bit so that you can make them hit at the same time as a beginner level basic magic.

Necromany is used as a quick defensive spell that gives you time to charge a bigger spell.

I'll let that one pass.
>>344448471
Can be defined as an "element".
>>344448521
Space-related, doesn't count.
>>344448572
All of those are "element" specific.
>>344448638
Does it include energy too, or simply telekinetics?
>>344448695
Thats a pass.
>>344448710
Also a pass.

Iffy, but I guess.
>>344448874
Depends on the context, but in certain settings/terminologies, yes.
>>344448925
How do they work?
>>
>>344447218
Death doesn't do any math, it simply states that if you don't resist it you die, so i always imagine it heals undead because the actual effect doesn't matter to them and its probably the same type of spell used to resurrect them anyway.

>>
>>344449771
Keep in mind we are not talking about the platonic elements here.

What I was after was every word for magic that deals purely in magical energy/mana direction/manipulation. No intermediaries or 3rd parties, just pure magical energy directed into a physically damaging form.
>>
>>344450073

So then there is no such thing as non elemental magic?

Because it would just be aligned with the "magic" element
>>
>>344450073
how about channeling ?
>>
>>344450424
>magic
>arcane
>esoteric
>energy
>pure
>mana
>entropic
>aether

All of these have one thing in common. They reference magical energies without assigning them to a specific purpose or function.

Thats what I'm after.

>>344450543
Channelling is a means of transmitting the energy, not a way to define the energy itself.
>>
>>344448336
Ether
Anima
>>
>>344450073
The criteria is a little difficult since games call their shit whatever they want.
For instance I was just playing 7th dragon and the unaspected type of magic with no strengths or resistances is called 'space' and also encompasses power buffs, shields and teleportation.
>>
>>344446635
It's called arcane magic. Pure magic.
>>
>>344451513
Its a difficult question, i know, especially because certain games bundle the pure "magic missile" into schools of magic encompassing other aspects as well.

Its the same with Oblivion's "entropic" spells. They are simply pure damaging magic within that game, but you could argue that "entropic" falls under certain categories like corrosion, decomposition, time, etc.

>>344452013
This is true.
>>
>>344452013
Correct

Why would you add Fireball when you could add Imolate instead? And it combusts low HP enemies for a lot of damage?

>>344446221
Godly if the missile spam gets real.
>>
>>344451091

But those all do have a specific purpose or function.

Magic is self explanatory

Arcane and esoteric are the same thing, and is basically just things that most people don't know about.

Energy and entropy are two sides to the same coin

Mana is just magic

Aether is just void magic with more magic

There's no such thing as magic without specific purpose or function without being so vague as to not even be considered a singular "element"
>>
>>344451091
>>Thats what I'm after.

>>
No time stop no buy

Also I always wondered how pure arcane spells would work in terms of how the damage someone? Like, earth spells crush you, fire burn obviously and so on, but I can't imagine how pure magic would work. Just phisycal damage I guess
>>
>>344452863
You are mostly correct.
Energy and entropy are not two sides of the same coin though.

As the anon stated in >>344452183 though, these things can be difficult to define and seperate.

>>344453027
To name the nameless. To catch the uncatchable. To manage the fury and unruly essence of reality.

>>344453030
Thaumaturgy is a practice of directing energies and thoughts, not a definition of the energy itself.
>>
>>344453916

Arcane magic gives you a headache and makes your tummy hurt
>>
>>344454001

How are energy and entropy not two sides of the same coin?

Energy magic would be either damaging enemies or buffing allies with excess energy, whereas entropy magic is usually siphoning off the excess energy of others to use in spellcasting.

One gives energy, one takes energy away
>>
>>344454048
So powerful until you die? Sounds extremely painful.

You fool! You're dabbling in forces beyond our control! You will cause the world nothing but misery!

I'll put an end to this, Wizard!
>>
>>344453916
Pure magical energy directed at someone will damage in them in a number of ways depending on the intensity.

Weak magic will simply weaken and tear the bonds between molecules. Strong magic can distort your very presence in reality.

>>344454209
Like you said, energy can do a number of things, but entropy is destruction in its purest form. It dissolves energy into near-nothingness and it dissolves matter.

>>344454429
I would not venture down this path had I not the means to reach my goal. Rest assured.
>>
>>344448336
Holy
>>
>>344454737

Entropy has absolutely nothing to do with physical matter, it is purely about energy, and energy can never be lost or destroyed. Entropy magic could kill a person by stealing their available energy, but it couldn't actually destroy someone's form.

You honestly sound like a novice mage.

If all the atoms in your body were suddenly devoid of energy, would they still cling together?
>>
>>344455005
matter equals energy bitch
>>
>>344454209
Energy is energy.
Entropy is the fact that conversion of energy isn't easy to do both ways, so it tends to go in one specific way.
Entropy is a part of energy, not a "coin side" of it.
>>
>>344455297

You can't take energy from an atom without destroying it. destroying an atom creates enromous amounts of energy. That kind of spell would basically turn your victim into a nuke, which is more of a fire spell if you ask me. It also shows how entropy is the flip side of energy
>>
>>344455539

In the context of real life physics, yes. I know that entropy is basically energy inefficency, but in a magic context it is basically vampire magic.

I understand you confusion but it is like I said. Entropy is the very concept of destruction, matter and energy, when taken to its extreme.

We are diverging from the topic though. What other words for "pure" damaging magic can you name?

>>344456124
I am not familiar with these. Please elaborate.
