Sims 4 has the best art style and core gameplay mechanics, but it's pretty shallow right now because of a lack of expansions. Sims 3 has tons of content with all the expansions, but you'll need mods to keep the game stable and to stop your saves from corrupting. Sims 2 is probably the best all round, but it is starting to show its age. Don't play Sims 1, it hasn't aged well and it'll just ruin your nostalgia.

i asked this a week or two and ended up just stealing 4, i've only played it once so far though. however the creation and building neighborhoods aspects seemed actually pretty good which is all i care about. the actual gameplay on a micro level in all the games bores me, and i don't like the weird emotion buffs in 4 which give you more temporary contextual actions, its just more micro nonsense. from more a overall, macro level, its alright.

Sims 3 is the objective best because of the staggering amount of content there is once you add all the expansions. However the biggest problem with S3 is that it runs like ass even on nice systems.
4 has a nice art style but if you've played the others its hard to look past what seem like deliberate steps backwards (No Neighborhoods to explore, no toddlers, etc)

They did a good job of optimising it, if you are willing to sacrifice visuals you can probably get good performance out of it.

It's my belief that any one Sims game isn't worth playing until all of the expansions are out.
So for now, play Sims 2 or 3, and wait for Sims 4 to finish its run before getting it.

dunno, my PC isnt great but it isnt terrible.
it has loading screens for everything, which is annoying but probably means it runs fine. you can't go into a neighbors house without a loading screen

The problem with Sims 4 is the fact that its not open world like Sims 3. It just doesn't feel the same when everything is instanced.
Sims 4 also have by far the worst modding community i've ever seen in a video game. Every single mod costs real money, while Sims 3 have thousands of free mods.

It's a shame they sacrificed the open world for that pseudo-open world, but it didn't really work very well in Sims 3 either, community lots were always empty and had like 2-3 sims at most. It also still causes performance issues even on top end modern PCs. I wish they had just worked on implementing it better for 4 though.

The problem is that it's not really (Not that Sims should even need a gaming PC in the first place), it's not uncommon to see people with top end i7s and GTX 980s complaining about stuttering/frame drop. Sims 3 is really an incredibly poorly optimised game. There's a certain level of hardware where you reach peak performance, and no matter how much better your PC is it won't run any better. It's playable enough to be enjoyed, but it's not what I'd call "completely playable". (I have an i5-6500 and a 970 and I run into stuttering far more than I should be for a 7 year old game)
Like I said, it would have been much better if they had just worked on a good implementation of open world for 4, but the open world in 3 wasn't really that good in practise even if it was a great idea.

Sims 3 load times are atrocious, but you only need to load the save and then there's no more loading screens while you're playing. You can alt+tab while the save loads too.
TS4 has the best asses and now the game looks fucking great. EAxis changed the lightning or something.

sims 3 is the most complete package. but be prepared to spend a few days reading. the game runs like shit for how massive it is and you need about 500 fixes ranging from script mods like nraas that clean shit up, to dling entire re-worked worlds to root out routing problems.
probably took me a week to get my whole game sorted and stable with minimal lag. its worth it though. i just can't go back to a non open world.

turn vsync on. the menu is running to fast. it happened to me in s3 and games like stalker. vync fixes it.
