To be honest, for beginners I'd recommend reading textbooks mixed something easy. If VN, something about school life. People usually recommend Flyable Heart. It's debatable how good of a choice it is, but if you choose it, you'll at least be able to find others that read it and will be able to discuss it.

It took me a long time to start playing Subahibi. Maybe it's the idea that after you learn Japanese you could play it anytime, so you don't feel the pressure anymore.
