It depends on where you live and how much you leave the house really.
I work in a 20 story building, where my company owns about 9 of the floors. I found out there are about 15 or so players. I convinced them to all go yellow, and we found out there is a large faction of red players around, and there just happens to be a gym on top of the fountain in the courtyard.
During the lunch hour, it got pretty crazy yesterday.

I tend to encourage people to join yellow, since it's kind of the underdog faction right now. Most people are joining Red or Blue based on which game they played as kids, so Yellow has a lot less people right now.

Found a CP 139 Slowpoke. Second strongest is CP 78 Eevee and CP 67 Psyduck after that. Just took one stroll through the city and found a bunch of pretty decent stuff. Interestingly enough the game isn't officially released yet in my country, but there are occupied gyms everywhere.

Use the "power up" feature to increase its CP.
Increase your trainer level to raise the CP cap.
It's pretty easy. Choose common Pokemon at first to do it because you need a LOT of candies and shit.

It's definitely casual bullshit. That said it's fun as fuck to walk around looking for pokemon. Think of it more as an excuse to walk around the neighbourhood looking for pokemon than anything else.
