It's amazing.

I'm at the part where the evil castle flew up in the sky and i suspect it's the last thing in the game.

>>
>>344405878
I'm playing IV right now and I must say it's just a childish, simplistic JRPG with an extremely cliché story and gameplay with no strategy whatsoever.

Of course, it's impossible for a NES JRPG to be nothing else, and for it is, it's a very good game, but if you RIGHT NOW recommend it when there are several games which have surpassed it in every regard (all their sequels for a start) you are nothing but a sheep.

You are like those who parrot FF IV or V are better than VI or VII, no they are not, objectively, stop being contrarians hipsters, they were great games in their time, and the genre wouldn't had evolved without them but now they are nothing but history.
>>
>>344405878
My favourite is actually VI.
I just like the atmosphere so much. I also find the OST way better than V's, together with IV. They're all great games and OSTs though.
>>
>>344409445
FFV has objectively better pacing, dungeons, bosses and gameplay than VI or VII

Dragon Quest 1 mobile has annoying decisions too. One being the screen ratio is FUCKED. And the other is that hidden objects on the floor sparkle. Which might be good for something like DQ2 which loves bullshit like that but DQ1 is all about finding them on your own. With NPC telling you how to find it without any outside help. Also there seem to be a nasty bug where Dragon Lord only does it's super breath attack when you are under a certain level. Don't know about DQ2 but that game is filled with annoying bullshit already so adding another wouldn't shock me.

There MIGHT be some sort of bug with the final boss having its breath attack damage numbers sent through the roof, but it also might be A) damage adjusted because all cousins can now reach level 50 or B) another case of level affecting behavior/numbers (another anon said that the damage was relatively normal for him, but he was also level 50/50/50 unlike me)

While nice I do disagree about NES of DQ4. It actually is really enjoyable. By that time they "fixed" a lot of the annoying things that plagued NES JRPG. The only thing that might make people annoyed is that the AI which can't be turned off with cheats. Plus the lack of a in game map I guess.

But I'm not that big of a fan of the DS/iOS version of DQ4 so maybe I'm more excepting.
>>
Dragon Quest 9 was extremely fucking tight, man

Easily one of my favorite JRPG's. Literally the only thing wrong with it is the fact it's a bit corny, but the customization for characters and the fact that armor shows on your characters and the classes have some pretty fucking sweet moves, like Multifist, make it a 10 oudda fukken 10. As far as, "JRPG" is concerned this game has every fucking thing imaginable besides some kind of "pet" bullshit.

>>
>>344416712
What's funny though is terry from VI is the protag of DQM. You would think they would have kept it just because. Also fun fact, terry starts with full beastmaster, another nod to DQM.
>>
>>344416656
I don't think they did though, I remember getting Goowain in the DS remake.
>>
>>344417207
There is monster recruitment, kinda. They are more like additional party members to recruit, and seveerely neutured from the original release. The original had like 40 or so monsters that would randomly join if you had beastmasters in your party. VI DS has like 8 that you meet on the field and some you just talk to.
>>
>>344417539
Oh yeah. When I played the original the Slime Knight was the only one I ever used because he kicked serious ass so I guess I just assumed since I got him and a few others it was still in the game. Damn I need to get another copy of that, it's been ages since I played it.
>>
>>344405878
Thats not DQV.

DQIX was fun, and being able to customize your party was really cool too, but the story just felt really weak.

I mean, yeah, dramatic stuff was happening everywhere, but nothing felt truly serious at all. Kinda killed the fun for me (that and the fact that the online mode is dead).
>>
>>344407947
You've got good taste even though I disagree with you. Different strokes. For me it's

5>3>7>8>6>4>9>1>2

But I like them all for such different reasons that it feels cruel to rank them.
>>
>>344418031
I like the call it "the inconsequential feels trip". They had all that heavy stuff happening all the time and the tone was rather melancholy but overall it was really rushed and didn't make a whole lot of sense if you stopped to think about it for five seconds.

The party customization was 10/10 though. One playthrough I literally made Trunks and designed a team around him going super saiyan and oneshotting bosses.
>>
>>344418440
Yeah. For me the biggest problem really was that everything felt rushed, at least story wise.

There were some really cool moments, like that mad priest boss or that stone village.

I still need to finish the game though. Probably going to pick it up again once i fix my ds.
>>
>>344418440

Might be because Yuji Horii was working on the story for Dragon Quest X at the same time. And I hear the story for DQX is not only better, but one of the best in the series.

It also could be that Level 5 made the game. And aside from DQVIII and IX, I can't stand any of their other games.
>>
>>344419386
I imagine then horri treated IX like he treated chrono trigger, providing a basic script and some general design ideas like how to advance classes and let Level-5 handle the rest.

He probably put more into it than that. He was definitely there to playtest it. Fun fact, not only does Yuji Horii playtest he game, but so does the music writer Koichi Sugiyama.

I also suspect he had more to do with it because if he left it mostly for Level 5, it would have turned out to be shit like Ni no Kuni or Fantasy Life. Same with if Chrono Trigger was left only to Squaresoft, it would have just been FFVI with Toriyama artwork.
>>
>>344420202
I'm going to miss this glorious bastard. He was old when the first DQ game came out. Truly underrated when it comes to game music.

They also made dark cloud series which was actually pretty solid. Although they were a bit clunky too. Maybe all level-5 really needs to do is scale back some and polish what they're working on instead of expanding the scope over and over.
>>
Anyone got anything for getting into the endgame into this, never really did and I could do with something to do
>>
>>344421192
you're going to need some type of way to get the DLC quests to have a truly good time. Either action replay, save editor, something like that.

Then it's just jumping into the grottoes and hopefully you get a map for another grottoe. Part of the reason you want to play with friends is you get different rewards and can trade maps with each other.
>>
>>344421740
I might have the dlc quests, i did get the daily items you could buy each day or whatever it was, and all those outfits of previous DQ characters or whatever they were. So I probably do have them I imagine, how do I check if I do? Think my friend has an ar i could borrow if i needed to though. And alright then, I have done some grottoes forget how far I got with that though. I think I had one of the super boss ones or whatever they were that's just a boss, and i got destroyed
>>
>>344413961
Pretty sure Multifist is stronger than normal unarmed attacks and is the only decent move out of the fisticuffs skillset. Fisticuffs is still fucking garbage though, what were they thinking?
>>
I really liked the way they protrayed combat in this game compared to the rest of the series. The closeness between the hit and death animations makes that rpg tradition even more enjoyable.
>>
>>344422272
It's kinda meant to be a challenge, but it's also not really that bad. Wind sickles is an AOE attack that scales 100% with STR and is strong against EVERY SINGLE ELEMENT for no mana cost. Also for martial artist Fisticuffs is pretty good because you have no fucking mana to work with anyways and your high agi means spamming abilities is fine since you're the primary damage but won't be getting combo bonuses anyways.
>>
>>344424947
I just wish fists scaled better in the long run. I think claw weapons are lame.
>>
I recently ordered Chrono Trigger for the DS since I missed it on the SNES.
If I'm in the mood for more JRPGs after that, which one would you say is the best DQ game?
>>
>>344425082
Yeah, even with the fact that the skill tree gives only damage ups and includes that sweet +60 instead of the master skill it still falls short when you start having other characters with 4 star weapons. I'm considering giving it to a paladin though to see if that works considering the scroll ability seems like it could be completely broken on a tank.

I kind of stopped playing it in the snow region. Need to fight that dude to avoid spoilers. And I finished 7 and enjoyed that all the way through. It tries to outdo DQ 1 in every way but in doing so they didn't really solve some big issues that came with doing it.
>Party Members
They didn't really understood balancing that out well. You find the game is insane is pacing because they just didn't know how to correctly balancing a team out with multiple enemies until DQ3 Also one of your teammate is pretty damn useless. Since they tried to give you a Red Mage like character who doesn't really get anything good until much later but with much bad stats he dies all the fucking time and have horrible MP pool to use said spells.
>Giant world
The whole of DQ2 is really big but almost too big. Giving you a boat and force you to go everywhere with no idea what areas you are too low to go to. DQ3 makes you warp all over the world before giving you the boat so you have a basic idea of the world before getting it.
>Hidden items
While DQ1 had them there wasn't all that much (mostly just the Tolken and Flute). And NPC told you exactly where to go to search. DQ2 is vague as fuck on where to go to find them. And there are tons of hidden objects to find all over the world. So you will find yourself going into your menu and searching every square area to find something.
>Rhone
Just Rhone. Both the Cave to Rhone and Rhone. It's just a bad fucking place that is just unfair all around.
>>
I've been having an itch to play an MMO and other than FFXIV all that comes to mind is DQX which isn't even available outside of Nipland. Why?
>>
>>344426913
No it wasn't. It also allowed you access to abilities and stat bonuses your class wouldn't have been able to access otherwise. If all you did was farm skillpoints for the class you wanted you were playing terribly. Doing shit like getting warcry or pratfall on paladins or agility buffs for your sage was way more important.

IX is literally my favorite Dragon Quest title. X looks to be just that but buffed up. But alas. Creating my own team was the main pull, but the game never got stale.

Best thing is when your mage gets some HP from the Warrior/MA and the boosts from the sage class. I have a mage that bounces to a sage and another sage that bounces back to her priest class.

Don't get me started on my Warrioator and Palidiator.

What is it with monkeys in Japanese games? They're all huge dicks who deliberately fuck you over and laugh about it
>>
>>344426424
Have you guys even played 3?
Hell 4 and 5 didn't have party chat either before being remade.
>>
Half-tempted to buy this Sofubi Monster Malroth since the line is so fucking rare. What do you think the chances are of XI causing a new line of releases?
>>
>>344427737
People forget about class rebirthing too. It was actually a very deep, if grindy combat system. Your stats can go well into the thousands without stat seeds if you have the patience for it.

It is indeed. I just love the character customisation and how you can change freely your class when you get the skill without having to go back to the All-trade Abbey, and then there is Ganguro fairy and Patty.
>>
>>344428498
It's because monkeys are native to japan. It's based on real life. Imagine if your home was infested by evil squirrels.
>>
>>344427737
All class changing in 9 did was make classes redundant as hell because everyone can do almost everything anyways. What's the point of focusing on Martial Artist to master claws for example when I can just farm skill points from another class and put it into claws? It was stupid as hell.
>>
>>344429224
The ability to actually level the class skills of the class you wanted without having to sacrifice the weapons skills was part of the point. The system was focused around building your ultimate late/postgame party, something it did amazingly well.
>>
>>344429561
I mean having a universal skill point system is just bad game design and it makes no sense. Why would a mage who has done nothing but cast spells and decides to class change into a Warrior suddenly a Master Swordsman by dumping all his leftover skill points into Swords? You see what I mean? I guess you could argue it was the best class change system in the series up this point of the series and was a sort of a step in the right direction, but it wasn't really well executed is all. It's still no Final Fantasy Tactics job system.
>>
>>344429086
I wanna do lewd things to that fairy.
>>
IX's class system is the best in the series, the problem is that the main quest is too short and easy to actually make use of it, and the postgame is just a terrible unfun slog.
Such a waste.
>>
>>344430074
Because after dumping that into swords or something you can just change them back to being a mage, with the same level and same stats. But with a sword or any other skill you got while in the Warrior class.
>>
>>344430074
Well yeah but I can't think of a single better multiclassing system than FFT.

Also I do agree on universal skill points, although I'd bet those were left in because someone accidentally spent all their skill points on weapons in the class they wanted to use later on and got unhappy during playtesting.

Only DQ game I consider being below average.
>>
>>344426707
Yeah the sidequests were shit.
Kill X monsters using Y move or kill Z monster and wait for a random drop.
Repeat it 300 times.
Most of the content of DQIX is padding.
>>
>>344431116
I liked the ones that required you to have some kinda funky build, like the armamentalist one that required someone with mage points to be able to damage metal slimes.
>>
>>344431116
Most of the sidequests are at least somewhat fun, only a few are truly terrible, like the one where you have to kill flurries with a knife while they're sleeping.

I actually liked DQ9. The most time I've spent in a single save file on a DQ game.
Spent a lazy summer grinding out grottos and abusing the RNG. The online shop was a fun thing to check everyday.
