I've seen this game get a lot of praise on /v/. I've never played an indie game and typically have no interest in them. I haven't played a 2D platformer really since the SNES days, when I loved Mario, Donkey Kong etc. Is this game worth my time?

No it doesn't. The requirements for entering Hell and fighting Ballos are

At no point is the Machine Gun excluded. You could even go with the Snake if you want. Unless for some reason you think you need the Spur or some shit. Because that's wrong too. Hence the Polar Star, Fireball and Blade runs for minimum runs.
Do it op, here's some things to know
You should take the machine gun on your first play through, you can use it to fly around by shooting downwards
Dont abandon curly
Replay the game many times to get the different final levels and endings
(The red ogre last level is my favorite, but hell is nice too just for the satisfaction of beating it)
Get it for 3ds and play the extra level, best music in the game imo

Spur is recommended for most players, speedrunners use Snake because of its ability to pass through walls.
First timers are unlikely to bring machine gun to hell, and only madmen would try the polar star.
I'm not sure but I think you can skip the Fireball actually, much like the bubble.

Pretty much no other video I could find had Machine Gun. Mostly Spurs, with a Snake here and there.
As for Fireball, you can't skip it. Santa gives it to you in Grasstown and Chako, whose fire place you need to get through forces you to go to Santa.
For first timers I would expect more people to use Machine Gun just because it's a safe option. The hover isn't too useful though in Hell. Mostly as a crutch for poor Booster positioning.

It sucks on past cave and hell because it needs 2.3x EXP to level up. Having the spur gives you a high power weapon that doesn't need EXP, allowing you to use the Capsules to level up your missle launcher

Yeah, the 3D version sucked. I tried it, and it looked liked a low-lighted PS1 game. Theres loading times for every room, you can't change your controls, no sound test, theres a glitch that let's you completely break the game, and the rumored prinny mode was nonexistent.
I feel the Nemesis is an underrated weapon.

Jumping and movement is going to feel awkward at first, especially on a keyboard. However, it turns out to be a really good game. Decent story, highly encourages you to wander around, and a good reason to replay it for the different guns,saving Curly, and getting your ass through Hell.

Machine Gun is actually a fairly good choice for a first-time player. It acts as a psudo-jetpack, gives a lot of damage early on, and is fairly reliable. Plus, once you get used to the game with a second playthrough, you'll be better hitting small targets with a weapon like Spur.Snake is still the best.

Is it just me or is the Rocket Launcher a terrible option? The only bosses you'd want to have it in are past Last Cave where you should have the Spur anyway, plus you get more HP and EXP without it.

No, the rocket launcher and the super rocket launcher are excellent options for dealing with bosses. You don't generally want to use them for enemies though.
It's not the ideal strategy for every boss but it really counts if you use it right.

It's a neat Undertale clone, but the true ending's requirements are vague at best so look up how to get it.

I liked the game, but I think it's pretty overrated here. I suppose after one or two times the game is incredibly easy outside of the secret final level (which is mostly hard due to RNG).
People calling it "Metroidvania" is a little irritating; the game is basically broken up into level chunks and you rarely have to criss-cross between them.
I still want to get Kero Blaster because there seems to be a lot of praise for the game.

Just finished my 5th playthrough of the game. I wish this game were more relevent, it's easily one of the best platformers out there and has some of the best guns in vidya. I'd kill for a way to have both the Snake and Spur in the same run.

One of the best games ever made, in my opinion. I'd go as far as to say that anybody who likes videogames should play it at least once. Few vidya can match the glorious feeling that is beating Hell for the first time.
