Go play SR2 right now. SR3 isn't really as bad as a lot of people say but 2 is a better game in pretty much every single way.
The story can drag at parts but it's the best in the series and has a perfect mix of seriousness and craziness that SR4 wishes it could've done and SR3 just lacks entirely. And while it s a bit dated it does have a bit more content than the newer games.
The first game isn't bad but the only reason i'd play it is if you want to know the whole backstory for SR2, other than that it's just not as good.

The story in particular hit a delicate balance between screwball action comedy and legitimate pathos that hasn't been successfully replicated since by any sandbox developer, especially, Volition itself. SR3, meanwhile, is very clearly a game rushed to market from top to bottom. From the lack of variety in weapons, clothing, minigames and a patchwork story, I'm sure that it was pieced together in a frenzy so it could meet that lucrative holiday deadline.

I got 2 and 3 from that recent-ish Deep Silver humble bundle. I started with 3 simply because it was the one I'd heard about the most, no other real reason. I played it, I 100% it cause I'm one of those autists, and I enjoyed it.
After that I started with 2 to clear up more of the backstory since I did get lost in a couple plotpoints. The controls put me off at the start but as with anything I got accustomed enough to beat it.
After that I bought the franchise pack in the summer sale to get 4 and GooH. Not too long ago I finished 4, but the latter I haven't played yet.
It's easy to see why all after 3 is generally shit on. The shift in tone they made was ridiculous, going from a cheesy gangster story to a full blown CUH-RAZY narrative. I can understand that's probably something many people hated because of how blatant and sudden it was.
But here's the thing, I still enjoyed them all, each for what they are. Admittedly 2 in terms of content and overall care put into is a superior game, and I don't think anyone would say the opposite. But given how I spent three freedombucks to get 3 and 2 and got 100+ hours, then I'm pretty happy either way.
It's one thing to mourn for the murder of a franchise but you people always overreact about this particular one. You seem to forget despite SR2 being an excelent game it wasn't as successful as the other open world games at the time, namely GTAIV and to a certain extent San Andreas which was already dated at the time. Sadly those sell based on name alone, while also being great games on top of it. If Volition was to put the Saints Row name back in the map, they figured the best way to do it was distance it from GTA as much as possible by killing like 9/10ths of the seriousness it had. And I honestly can't blame them.

Why did volition or whoever took over development for 3 and 4 not see that the success of the games were from the story being taken some what seriously still while offering a nice sandbox, and having cars customization and the open world accessible and founded in reality.
I will never understand why they thought 4 was a good idea, maybe they thought that by copying gta at first and having that huge initial success and the not so stellar reviews from 3 that they would again try and copy a new franchise, say a super hero game and again it didn't work out for them.
