If there's a default or widely accepted name I go with that. If they don't have a proper name, I name them by their class or some other descriptive term. E.g. "Hero", "Warrior", "Boy", etc.

Really depends on the setting.
Generic european fantasy? Jace, William, Brandon, or Eric for men; Catelyn, Ashelyn, Ophelia, or Robin for women.
Sci-fi? Neil, Tristan, Isaac, or Jean for men; Sarah, Michelle, Ellen, or Tara for women.
Modern day, fantasy, sci-fi, or historic Japan? Shinji, Kiyoshi, Daichi, or Takumi for men; Sakura, Aoi, Akane, or Yoko for women.
I've got a whole list of this shit on my computer because I'm an autist who got tired of spending ages trying to think up appropriate character names for every RPG I played.

It's a story totally removed from me. I don't self-insert in films or books either. Just because I can control some of what's going on doesn't mean I should pretend it's about me.
How do people who do this play as female characters? As animals? As some disembodied ruler controlling armies?
What happens when the main character makes a bad choice because the plot says so? Do you go "well, I wouldn't do that, but let's just move on" or do you make up excuses like "... I guess I had a change of mind and decided to go another way - it's still me in the game though!"?
I'm not saying it's wrong to do any of this, I'm genuinely curious. Do whatever makes you enjoy games.
