It's a fun social experience. Yesterday my girlfriend and a friend of ours went downtown to play. We walked around on a beautiful day as our friend explained the game to us. Bumped into 2 couples playing together and chatted for a bit with complete strangers. Absolute blast. Pf course if I was a fucking loser I would have quietly been stopping to swipe my phone a few times while creeping on other people playing. So basically if you are a normal person this games great, but if you are a turbonerd, you're gonna be too autistic for it.

It'll gradually become less of a thing once people start filling up their Pokedex and realize there's not much else to do. It's also probably getting fueled by Gen 1 nostalgia.
The most amusing thing about it is definitely the social aspect (hur normals get outta muh hobbie). It's fun to see people being so public with their nerd shit, to the point where you'll sometimes bump into strangers looking for Pokemon in the same area.
I realize that's probably a detriment for lots of people around here that shudder at the thought of interacting with people face to face, but I really dig the way this game encourages people to physically travel and explore.
