Now play Deus Ex and Bioshock while the memory of playing SS2 is still in your head Hacker
>>
I'm yet to meet someone on /v/ who played ss2 fan missions
>>
>>344372493
I already played Deus Ex years ago. I played Bioshock when it came out initially, and now I'm kinda disappointed by it. Bioshock wasn't "inspired by" or the "successor to," Bioshock is a straight fucking copy of SS2. Same pacing, same mechanics, nearly the same themes, so on and so forth. Of course that shit got insane metacritic scores, they were going off of a template.
>>
>>344372393
I played through SS2 for the first time just this past week and loved it. I could never get into Deus Ex on the other hand, although I did love HR.

Why was everything past floor 5 such shit? The only part I remember enjoying was when Shodan takes away your cybernetic modules for defying her, although that was probably just because it felt like it was the only decision you can make in the entire game.

>enemies with disproportionate amounts of health and damage in comparison to everything earlier
>turret and egg spam reach new peaks, both of which will usually one hit kill you or inconvenience you greatly
>everything about The Many, the final fight and especially floor 7
>monologue makes the allegory to communism go from subtle to painfully blatant with Russian guy and Captain Diego
>they start making you backtrack a bunch, especially if you fuck up with the hell eggs
>progression basically halts at the end of floor 5, meaning the rest of the game is just using what you got in the exact same way for a few hours
>that shitty ending not the NAH one

You played a game that, even with obvious flaws, was still extremely good.

It's understandable for you to be in a state of shock, since so few of them are made anymore.

Unfortunately, now that you have been redpilled on what good games actually are, it will be quite difficult to enjoy most of what you play in the future. You will keep returning to a handful of titles you recoginize to be quality, while lamenting that nothing is ever worth playing anymore. Gradually becoming a bitter, ranting, bile-machine of a gamer, looking to vent his spleen out with others who've had simular awakenings.

IOW congrats. Lurk moar is no longer for you - you're finally part of /v/.

There should be a list of games that everyone has to play before posting on /v/, including SS, SS2, and Deus Ex.
What else?
>>
>>344378354
But the original SS has really bad controls.

At least SS2 for sure.
>>
>>344372903
You know the same guys made SS2 and BioShock, right? The "Shock" in the name isn't a coincidence. It was even advertised as a spiritual successor.

Also
>nearly the same themes
Not hardly.
SS2 was about the dichotomy of individualism and collectivism. The writer even said SHODAN was the lesser of the two evils presented, but the proper response was to rebel against both extremes.

BioShock was a respectful criticism of Objectivism by applying Levine's undertanding of Rand's economic/moral policies in an underwater society.

Both are great, but they're not the same thing.

This is the funniest underage meme.

IW wasn't even a bad game. It was critically panned at worst, though frequently enough celebrated to be called a "good game" going by reviews. Even for most fans, it was just an unfortunate deviation from the original that favored simplicity and made some poor design decisions (such as universal ammunition.)

It was still leagues ahead of anything else coming out at the time. You need to stop believing every opinion you read on the internet.
>>
>>344380265
This meme needs to die.

Was Invisible War bad? Absolutely not.
Was it a worthy sequel to the first? Same answer.

The story and atmosphere were great. The gameplay, albeit much much more simplified and inferior to the first, but it is still a good game.

I know about the inverse situation with Project Snowblind, but can you tell me more about this? You mean to say that at some point *after* pre-production, it was decided that this would be a Deus Ex title?

Do you even have a single fact to back that up?
>>
>>344380265

I'm always confused as to how much he actually had to do with that one.

He's never credited for it, not even as producer much less director. But when he talks to people about it personally, he makes it sound like everything wrong with it was all on him.

I can't tell if he's accepting the blame because he actually made bad decisions for it, or because he felt like he should've stopped Harvey from going over the falls.
>>
>>344381516
Whatever.

Wake me up when Sheldon Pacotti is writing the games again.
>>
>>344381392

I just beat the game (first time) with a primary focus on Standard Weapons and Hacking. Not the most exciting build in the world but hacking literally everything was so fucking fun. Running up to turrets and hacking them was the best part.
>>
>>344383089
About 1/3 of the game enemies are robots 2/3 is organics.
Portable batteries are rare in general, but almost every deck have recharging station or two, carry two laser pistols and have high maint stat for dat ammo pool.
You can also recharge them with psi spell.
If you don't want to stick to energy only gimmick too tight have standard 3 for shotguns.
>>
>>344383089
Energy weapons are pretty pointless in general since AP ammo exists. It takes too much investment to be able to use the pulse rifle instead of just maxing small guns and taking 1 point in heavy weapons for the grenade launcher.

IW is lame as hell.

The first DX dropped you off on an island overrun by terrorists and told you to git gud. The stakes were laid out right in front of you. The game's world was relatable, built on conspiracy theories that everyone's familiar with. The political struggle in the game was a perfect representation of the very real "Jihad vs. McWorld" - traditionalism and isolationism versus globalism.

IW starts out with like three guys coming into your building. After dispatching them and stepping out into the wide world of future Seattle, you are immediately confronted with the fact that there isn't anything worth caring about. It's boring and pointless.

SS1 scares people because of old PC controls. SS1 is just as good, if not better than SS2. They're both amazing games and playing one but not the other is a disgrace.
>>
>>344389192
They won't make it at the rate its going. It might not even make to 1mil.
>>
>>344389372
They're almost at their target, and the last week always have a ton of new backers.
>>
>>344372903
They even have the exact same twist of "Surprise! Your mission control is actually the main villain in disguise!"
>>
>>344389192
Wait what, is someone asking for money to make an updated system shock 2?
>>
>>344389192
It's going to be a mix off both either way, works for me.
>>
>>344389192
They discussed a goal which would add a classic mode without those additions in a recent update.
It's better than nothing.
>>
>>344390239
To be fair, Shodan never once tries to hide that she's going to murder you once you get rid of the annelids for her. You could argue that Shodan controls the player with upgrade modules in the same way that Atlas controls the player with mental conditioning, but I wouldn't draw any parallels beyond that.

Night Dive just got the taste for it making EX and HD versions of old games and with SS3 coming seems like a cool thing since they did a nice recreation which is the playable alpha pre the kickstarter.

Are people really so brain damaged that they can't get their heads around SS1's controls, especially since mouselook mod is a thing? Everything is laid out right there for you in the HUD, and most actions have a hotkey. It's no wonder they don't make manuals any more since apparently no one can read them.

Just think about it.

The Many were a failed experiment and SHODAN wants something of a servant race that would worship her.

What's not the best idea here? Do it the old fashioned way. And if the Citadel stuff (aka: Cyborg Mutants) and The Many (organic biotech) didn't work, then why not combine the two and do it with a different way?

Though on the other hand she's hypocritical because she's using a human body to do so. Something she detests.

I did! One took place on a spooky space ship, the other two featured ground missions and a Thief homage. They were pretty fun, level design and enemy placement was better than I expected from a fan project.

The only downside was the audio logs, but I suppose that's a given. The makers had the right to have fun with their project.

I'm pretty sure on harder difficulties they have access to much faster animations so hitting them in melee and trying to back off without getting hit back is harder to pull off.

>Daily reminder that SS2 RPG systems are horrendous trash.

That's a matter of taste. At least the system is more sophisticated than Dead Space's and I haven't seen people complain about that one. Besides, the game makes sure you can afford the critical skills, so how you want to tool yourself up is up to you.

You are wrong, I only ever played the game on Impossible and it's pretty obvious. Anyway, you don't ever have to hit high-tier melee enemies like rumblers because the game shits anti-personnel bullets by that point, though I'm sure a melee build can pull that off nontheless.
>At least the system is more sophisticated
Sophistication does not mean quality, complexity isn't a goal by itself. I didn't play Dead Space (I've been meaning to, it looks fun), but as long as it doesn't have combat skills that pretend to be good but are actually horrible, I assume it's okay.
>the game makes sure you can afford the critical skills

Oh, and I want to add something, because it's really not clear: I really like SS2. I loved it after the first playthrough. In retrospect, I realize it has all these problems - a lot of those - but my first impression was overwhelmingly positive. The game has great atmosphere, music, logs, characters and the gameplay feels tense at least in the early game. I don't hate it, I just recognize the flaws in the gameplay.
>>
>>344407807
>Sophistication does not mean quality, complexity isn't a goal by itself.

It's not, but having more options to choose from is a good thing. That's what SS2 achieves as you can have a fully functional melee, PSI playthroughs and standard weapons (with the grenade launcher tossed in). Energy has the benefit of a laser rapier as well as making the laser pisol somewhat more useful for camera/droid busting, even if the tree falls off in the late game. Exotic suffers from unexplained weapon use (who knew you had to HOLD LMB to not blow yourself up with the Viral Proliferator?) or bloated requirements but yields the best melee weapon.

>So what you're saying is "the system is extremely loose so it's not a big deal if you waste a ton of nanomodules in a completely useless tree". Yeah, that does sound right.

In what way is the system loose? You won't get locked out of progress because you're given enough modules to pick up the necessary skills. Research only needs level 1 and I think it can be circumvented with the implant. Hacking is more expensive but if you were a careful player you'll have an ICE-pick or two ready. The standard pistol is reliable and effective, provided you have enough specialised ammo which you should have, thanks to the savings made from your other skills. The grenade launcher also requires a minuscule investment boasting versatility and extremely high damage once modified, the latter thanks to a bug.

The more I think of it, the more I wonder how inept one would have to be to screw up their build. The game takes a lot of cues from the survival horror without resorting to the gimmick that is unkillable enemies. It is unique to finally have a game from that genre where your resources can be considered finite (especially for a new player) and you have to manage them carefully.

Finally, Dead Space is a great series, at least the first two games are. Verdict is mixed up as far as DS3 goes, though most of the time /v/ has been overreacting.
>>
>>344407514
No, I don't want to contribute to those shitty stretch goals.
>>
>>344409207
If the options are non-obviously fake - I have to disagree. Standard weapons are hideously OP even if we decide to exclude shit-on-everything-in-a-can that is Assault Rifle (two-shotting rumblers and military robots? You better fucking believe it!) because pistol with some training, mods and specialized ammo is still hilariously strong and shotgun ammo is everywhere, especially if you take your time and reload every hybrid's shotgun for the last shell (I did that!). Oh yeah, and the more Standard you have, the better your wrench is - not like you're going to need it past first couple of floors.

Heavy weapons - GL is very good because of the bug. Stasis projector is commonly agreed to be shit, I actually liked it in exactly one place in the body of the Many. Fusion blaster or whatever it's called is a disappointment.

Energy - laser pistol is like my favorite gun in the game because I'm autistic enough to backtrack to the recharge stations and it's possible to repair it with starting Repair skill. Rapier is supposedly good, rifle supposedly shits on robots... but you can already do that with armour-piercing bullets???

Exotic - again, cool melee weapon, SHIT everything else... except for those implants, do you need Exotic for them? Oh, right, you only need research. Well. The guns suck, Worm Launcher requires like 6 Maintenance (what the fuck) and by the time you get it you have cheaper option to kill organic enemies. What the fuck were they EVEN thinking.

Btw your resources are not finite at all (unless you mean cyber-modules, really) - activate a medical bed in an area and you can farm hybrids for nanites and shit. I've done it for some reason for a bit. I've also ended the game with like 700 bullets of only standard ammo, 300 or so shells. Never bought any ammo either.
>>
>>344407514
I would if it wasn't for some of the stretch goals.

2 is literal dogshit in every conceivable way, I picked it up and beat it in 6 hours, the last hour of which I was just wishing it would end already. It had absolutely nothing of note to say with its paper thin philosophical bullshit, and I barely remember it which can only be a good thing. 1 had an alright twist and was competent, and 3 at least tried to change up the environment even if the story and gameplay was by far the worst of the 3. 2 was a clone without any of the elements that made the first game good.
>>
>>344411298
SS1 was not meant to be an RPG, slapping on an RPG progression system isn't necessarily going to improve things when SS1 was already designed for players to progress by finding equipment. If I went through the trouble of unlocking the magpulse on the medical deck, but then the game tells me I can't use it because I don't have Energy Weapons 3 yet, I don't see how that would be an improvement.

As much as I like SS2, I think the RPG parts are weak.
>>
>>344390239
No, BS has a guy who was basically just mentioned suddenly being the BBEG, SS2 has SHODAN reveal herself after gaining your trust, being thouroughly discussed in the audiologs and after an actual buildup, not just before the point where she is going to kill you.
