It's fine for older games, and newer games are supporting it more quickly. Unless you NEED to play the most recent AAA titles you'll have little issue on linux.
It's doable, but it takes more effort than on Windows and you often end up with worse performance.

With Valve pushing SteamPlay, there are a lot of games available these days. The triple-A games are in short supply, but there is still a decent selection. You should just dual-boot if you want to play all the latest and greatest

OpenGL games are great. DirectX not so much.
WINE makes most Windows-exclusive games just werk on Linux.
