3. In five decades, multiple parties representing the ideologies and people of fundamentalism, technocracy, labor, and democracy are at the edge of violent conflict. In the depths of the dwarven halls of Khaz Modan, the Royal Crown suffers as its king, Magni Bronzebeard, is consumed by obsession--the greying dwarf tinkers at the edge of insanity soon after discovering varying artifacts in the old Blackrock caverns. The once popular Explorer's League has been downcast in blame for the affliction of their king, and now new powers emerge at every corner...

I keep seeing this meme. I have only played WC3 and though it wasn't anything special, it wasn't really bad in my opinion either. Why do Warcraft fans keep saying that the franchise went downhill after this game?

the game didn't start going downhill until BC when we started killing off major lore figures for no reason. vanilla WoW was great story-wise because, well, there was no story. you were just an adventurer in a world with basic problems involving faction conflicts and dragons. it was a fantasy world brought to life and it was amazing...but then BC happened and from there it just snowballed into "let's just kill every major lore figure until there are hardly any left"
