>>

Mobile games aren't like that.
Especially one with as much social pull as "GUYS LOOK I CAUGHT A CHARMANDER".

Miitomo, however, that was a fucking wash.
>>
>>344329563
>Sega retires from making consoles
>All their IPs go to shit
I'm sure the same would happen for Nintendo.
>>
Keep in mind that none of this means PokemonGo is successful. It just means idiot shareholders are trying to get in on the chance it is.
It's only number one downloaded because it just came out. They haven't actually made any money or anything.
We'll need to wait another couple months to see if people are still playing and actively buying the microtransactions or if everyone realized it's shit and drops it.

Miitomo also shot to #1 downloaded and boosted Nintendo shares however it never even cracked top 100 grossing and was effectively a flop for Nintendo because it didn't actually make any money.
>>
>>344329643
yes they are
in a month, only a few will be playing this garbage
>>
>>344328704
Good, now do F-Zero
>>
>>344329695
All their IPs gather dust because they only ever make Sonic. :(
>>
>>344329643
The social games that have legs all have addictive gameplay elements and, surprisingly, more actual game interactivity than this.

The core part of this game is movement, and after the glitz wears off most people are going to abandon it. Largely because there's nothing to do and no real reward for doing what there is.
>>
>>344329710
I'm not really a /biz/ guy, but how do shares work? Wouldn't Nintendo profit from this immediately, or is it something that would only benefit them if it continually is played and stuff is purchased in it?
>>
>>344329710
>it didn't actually make any money.
Nintendo was talking about profits from Miitomo almost fucking immediately, you idiot.

It wasn't a smash hit but it was clearly good enough for Nintendo to start investing into multiple games.
>>
>>344328704
>/v/

We didn't do shit. /v/ alone can't make Nintendo's stock soar. This is literally every normie downloading Ingress with a pokemon mod and cash shop onto their mobiles.
>>
>>344329367

But they're not actually devoting their own teams to it, are they? They've outsourced it to other companies, so it isn't even distracting from their main projects.

That is probably a part of why Pokemon Go is so spotty. I'd figure if Nintendo made it themselves it might have been more polished, but it probably would have taken longer to come out too.
>>
I didn't download it.
>>
>>344329530
This.
>>
>>344330096
And people will still say Sony is shit despite Nintendo transitioning to mobile.
Fuck this board.
>>
>>344329334
It's not like the Wii U has anything worth buying it for. There's only a few games on it that aren't just financially safe sequels.
>>
The game is going to shed normies who just wanted a quick nostalgia fix really fast, and then its going to shed everybody when sun and moon come out because there's nothing going on in this game.
>>
>>344329939
A very basic description is that people give your company money to buy a small part of it. At the end of the year they get a % of the profit the company makes.
In the short term Nintendo makes money from this, but the shareholders are obviously hoping mobile games do well so they can rake in profits for themselves.
>>
>>344328704
>Wii u plummeting
>everyone and their dog of 90s kids getting pokemon go
Guess mobile gaming is Nintendo's future.
>>
>>344330206
Sony makes mobile games as well you tool.
>>
>>344330132
>But they're not actually devoting their own teams to it, are they?
They have a dude at their stockholder conferences talking about Nintendo developing in-house games and potential mobile controllers, anon. Nintendo's all in-house.

Pokemon wasn't inhouse because Pokemon Company is only partially Nintendo.
>>
>>344329367
Except their not. Why is this board filled with retards?
>>
>>344329367
And they're most definitely are developing more games for the NX than for mobile too. The fact that they aren't developing much for the Wii U anymore means jack shit when you know they have a new console being released in less than a year.
>>
>Nintendo learns they can put Pokemon into something that isn't just mainline games and shit puzzle games and it does well

WOW!!!

A shame they didn't realise this about 12 years ago.

Where is the 3D pokemon game? I thought Nintendo wanted to SELL their console?

Who /doesnthaveasmartphone/ here?
>>
>>344329538

that's not how it works for mobile games.

mobile games are meant to past the time for transistions, such as walking to a place, or waiting to be served dinner, or rdiing the bus/train/carpooling.

Mobile games aren't meant to have depth, thats why they're cheap and are pumped out so damn quickly.
>>
Yeah, and the same exact shit happened when Miitomo came out. You guys still playing Miitomo? When's the last time you guys cracked open Miitomo? When's the last time we had a thread about it?

Oh wait, it didn't have any content and was dead in a week. I give Pokemon Go about a month before it drops off the face of the Earth, just like every other flavor of the month application people put out.

>>
>>344329939
Unless Nintendo has the stuff to back their share price, it doesn't really work in their favor.
Nintendo isn't a pump and dump scam company, so share price alone doesn't matter as much to the company itself, and overvalued price is just asking for trouble once everyone realises that the company is shit.

If the price is high based on feelings alone and not actual facts, then when those feelings go away it's going to eventually go back where it belongs in the long run. And Nintendo is a "long run" type of company so that isn't good.

And they have all their other studios work on shovelware.
>>
>>344329538

It really doesn't seem like it will matter. The amount of people actively playing might decrease, but these games operate on rabid users anyways. There will be people out there paying for all the goodies in order to get ahead, and they'll be taking gyms for years. No doubt the game will get updates because it's probably making Niantic a nice chunk of cash.

It's already apparently topping the store in earnings, so it's going to turn a profit. Nintendo will definitely put some more money and attention into the mobile market after this, though I doubt it's going to ruin them or become their focus. Nintendo is all about their brand, and they almost certainly know that the bedrock of their brand is their console business. It wouldn't make sense to just go fully mobile and casual, it would water down their brands if the only thing behind them were casual mobile games. They need game industry hype. If Splatoon had started as some shit mobile game, it would have no strong branding. But it's a hit acclaimed video game with a huge fanbase fueling it, so a casual mobile game would probably get some success.
>>
>>344330401
I work in mobile game development. Unless there's a big content influx to this game, it's not going to keep a whole lot of people for extended periods of time. There's less to this game than in just about every mobile game that's ever gotten a stable long term following, and a big part of what you are supposed to do isn't going to help you kill time unless your location lines up with something good.

At best, it's a game that will be checked briefly before someone loads up a different game.

Mobile games are not long term success. They are quick cash that burns out quickly (No one cares about Miitomo anymore). This is exactly what shareholders want though, so we'll continue to see cheap, low quality nongames like this to pad out their actual gaming ventures.

Steam is only growing.
Gog is growing.
PC games continue getting made.
>>

This has nothing to do with why people stopped using mp3 players.

People who were willing to carry 3ds' and vitas around with them are willing to carry a gamepad if it fits in your pocket.
>>

So many wrong assumptions here that I'm not even sure where to begin

Nintendo can't sustain both parties by a mobile-only method. They're going to have to choose to either keep fighting themselves with both or go mobile-only and possibly home console.
>>
On one hand, I really like Nintendo and would like to see a better flow of games from them. On the other hand, mobile is cancer and Nintendo actually releases better games when they are doing shittier than usual. Overall, I'm indifferent.
>>
>>344333983
Gabe actually tried to team up with Microsoft initially, they said "Fuck you" and released Windows 8 with their own app store, which is when Valve went into full damage control mode and started pushing Linux gaming. Given that Steam Machines didn't take off as much as they wanted them too, I'm guessing he would be fine with a peace offering with Microsoft.

Welcome to mobile gaming
>>
>>344328704

Good. They can't make good console games worth a fuck, and haven't been able to, for years now.

The only reason the Wii U even sold any more was because they hired back that fucking stupid cunt Sakurai so he could make Smash and plague it with DLC, while blue balling everyone for months and months until said DLC was fully complete. They squeezed out as much money as they could with Smash in the sleaziest, scummiest way possible and it worked.

The new Zelda looks like more of the fucking same, but with little new insignificant quirks here and there. They're fucking done. They have to make a full jump for mobile. They can't survive on normies buy their consoles for one game for much longer.
>>
>>344334965

>Have to drive to a Pokemon center to heal your Pokemon

Nintendo is going to make random businesses a lot of revenue if they end up being a designated pokemon centers.

It's not okay when Nintendo does it
>>

What's the difference between bringing an attachment and brining a whole handle console?

I also wouldn't be supposed if Nintendo just made a case that has a slide out gamepad.
>>
>>344329051

>>

Different phone models of varying ages and pricing offer wildly different experiences in terms of compatibility and performance. Unless you lowball to shit, they become unplayable for many people.

Your peripheral example, for example. How do you make sure your audience owns it? How do you make sure they have it on them whenever they might feel the urge to play? How does it connect? How nice does it play with more and less popular phone models? How well does it fit all of these models of varying sizes?
>>
>>344334348
Or, they can just release a standalone tablet a-la the Wii U gamepad, give it an android-based proprietary OS so Pokemon Go and the rest of their mobile suite are launch titles, give it specs good enough to play Zelda BotW, and then top it off with an optional phone service to use all that infrastructure they've been building over the past year.

Having the NX be a traditional tablet that can play fucking Zelda at the $300~$500 price range would blow the current tablet market the fuck out, and would be infinitely more appealing than buying a home console.

No, the biggest hindrance is the userbase.
When you manage to get millions of downloads on a unfinished game that isn't even a game then you know that something is wrong. They don't need to make games if they go mobile, just put the pokemon title and you're all set. I mean, just look at all the fucking Frozen games in the shop with fucking millions of downloads.

As an aspiring game developer working with Unreal Engine 4 who wants to work on mobile games, this is AMAZING news. Modern iOS and Android devices are much more powerful than both the DS and Vita. Also, smartphones and tablets have a MUCH larger market base than either of those dedicated handheld platforms. 6.1 BILLION smartphone users are expected by 2020; that is a gold mine and for game developers to not want to take advantage of that is just nonsensical.

https://techcrunch.com/2015/06/02/6-1b-smartphone-users-globally-by-2020-overtaking-basic-fixed-phone-subscriptions/

Of course /v/ wants gaming to go back to the days of being exclusive and niche because they have an irrational dislike of "normies" so much, but I believe that gaming should become as ubiquitous as movies, music and books.
>>
>PC replaces consoles
>Mobile replaces handhelds
I'm ok with this.
>>
Mobile is objectively better than consoles or handhelds. Mobile is a free open platform, at least on Android. Anyone can develop a game for it. Everyone owns a mobile already. No more buying shitty expensive hardware with no games like Vita. No more carrying around a bulky dork flag like the 3DS. You just get great games, often for free. No more $40-50 games.

Mobile is the cure to the handheld cancer.

Game Freak and Niantic have to act fast now and capitalize on this immense popularity upswing that will last a few weeks at most. GO as it is right now is way too barebone to last beyond being a shortlived fad.

But I honestly don't think Niantic can do that. They obviously underestimated the sheer popularity behind Gen 1 and most likely thought that the game would have a player base not much larger than ingress. Niantic simply doesn't have the experience to reign catch in.

??????

The only way you get direct cash from owning shares is if the company pays dividends. Dividends are not derived from profits like this dumbfuck thinks. Nintendo does pay a dividend but it's disgustingly small compared to Airlines/Refineries/Banks.

The main purpose of buying public shares from an investor's standpoint is to hope to buy something that is perceived to be priced low and then sell at a time in which the price goes up from what you originally paid for and then realize a profit. People are buying Nintendo shares in the same way that people bought Tesla shares thinking that what they are doing will make the company more profitable in the FUTURE. In other words people are gambling that whatever the fuck Nintendo is doing now will eventually make them a more valuable company.

Because
1. They didn't make this, it was outsourced.
2. Nintendo likes working with their own hardware
3. Nintendo likes RECEIVING royalties from other devs, and doesn't want to pay it (this is what 100% makes them stay as hardware devs rather than jump to MS and Nintendo, the small boost in sales they'd get on other platforms does not equal the amount they get from royalties / don't lose in royalties by being on their own)
4. Nintendo completely owns the dedicated handled gaming market right now

The "normie" dislike is due to said appeals equaling to most games:
>being very easy and less-complex/challenging
>catering to every group, including loud non-players
>mobile-wise being Candy Crush/Tomb Runner-tier pay2wins
>stagnating in the same genres (ex: gritty military shooters)
>avoiding anything "troublesome" and outside plainer contexts

Otherwise, in a brighter future, I'd like to believe the same outlook you have and smartphones being utilized to run actual neat games, and bring on the attention of new developers who didn't previously care about vidya.

It's just that enough capitalistic choices done and continued today have jaded those hopes for many.
