Yes, but the game doesn't tell you that. If anything it encourages you to kill since the nonlethal methods of execution can only be found by exploring or overhearing conversations.

If you use the heart it will often tell you that by killing this person or that person you will be saving multiple lives in the long run. Almost all your marks are absolutely terrible people and the world would be a better place without them and some of the non-lethal options are arguably worse than just killing the person.
The game actively encourages you to kill right up until the end when it gets you the "bad" ending.

I started playing a couple years back and lost interest at the flooded district but I started a new game just recently and have been having a fucking blast. Just play it the way you want to play and if you are shooting for the good ending make sure it says Chaos: Low at the end of the level. If it goes to high you can do the next couple levels non-lethally and it will go down.
I've been playing according to how I think Corvo would react in each situation, mostly. Like it's ok to kill guards from certain factions but not from others, and if I'm in a jam I can kill and run away. Loads of fun. Make sure you read everything you can too, the lore and worldbuilding is great.

Yeah, the PC version lets you turn off any individual HUD elements you want. Not sure if the other versions do though.
