I like it. I tend to replay it once every year or two.
I like all the Final Fantasies between 4 and 12 (excluding 11 because never played on shitty dial-up). 13-2 was nice but I'm really burnt out on Final Fantasy.
I don't really get how people can say they hate any FF between 4-10 for that matter. They're all pretty different. 7 and 12 were my favorites for the mix of magic + technology + epic scale of the adventure. It's a pity I find the Midgar to Kalm section of 7 a bit shit.

Welp, it was THE standard bearer until near the end of the PS2 era, after which it hasn't particularly aged well. TBQATH I think a lot of that is just how much better our televisions and sound systems are now, growing up when I played it (was ~8ish) the imperfections of the game were more easily hidden by the imperfections of a standard CRTs.
It's also funny to think how far we've come graphically because this thing was shit hot fire graphically when it came out

I'm just worried they will "hardboil" grimdark them, AKA "make more realistic". Part of the original style's appeal is the fact that everything's a tad stylized, as if made by midget people, so that they fit well with the chibi overworld character models. Also nothing's exactly just brown and grey, but still manage to look dirty and worn down.

I played it 13 years after release and I was still incredibly gripped by it. It's world is incredibly well realized and has a very rich aesthetic unseen in gaming before then. The music is masterful and despite using midis, has aged incredibly well. The remake is looking really good, as Midgar is the most aesthetically rich part of the game and they've done a stellar job with recreating it for modern hardware.

I used to think FF7 had the best OST of all FF games. FF8 has surpassed it for me. FF9's OST as a whole is marginally inferior to both, but Dark Messenger is the best song in video game history. The world map theme in 9 is also incredible.
Between the 3 PS1 FF games you have some of the greatest music ever composed in video game history. The PS1 utterly BTFO of the N64 in that department.

Re read my statement. It's my "personal" favorite. The story between jecht and tidus I connect more with. And it's the only final fantasy that made me tear up. It's probably got the best combat, hunting for celestial weapons even knowing it is annoying for some, was still entertaining and I put a shit ton of hours into it on the ps2. Replayed it on psvita and now on steam. Just modern enough with keeping traditional turn based combat.

I played it for the first time earlier this year and it was much better than I expected. I really liked the story and characters and the general tone/vibe of the game.
What I didn't like about it was the simplistic combat coupled with the at times tedious materia system, but they weren't bad enough for me to dislike the game.
There are definately better JRPGs out there, but I can see why people who played it at launch praise it so much in the same way that people like me who played OoT at launch praise that game.

And the character design was stupid no matter how you look at it. Zidane looks like a cross between Michael Jackson and the Michelin Man. I was actually kind of disappointed they didn't do this in the movie much. Instead they just treated magic like a regular beam of energy. No lightning, no ice, no fire (although I think the short haired sephiroth light shot an explosive beam, which I guess counts as Flare.)

my first game into the final fantasy series....I got it 6 months ago and i putted 50 hours into the game. Totally worth it the combat system is really good, i really loved summoning shiva and that space dragon those attacks were awesome as fuck. Materia levelling up was also cool, especially seeing (if i remember correctly) when u level up they change animation.
The party system is cool aswell, being able to switch between what party members you want. Soundtrack is the best ive ever heard in a videogame, i sometimes log into ff7 just to fly around listening to the skywind theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dnl6NoEVdo
Traveling the world on a big map was also cool and made it feel less empty compared to a standard open world game today.
I really loved how most things is interactable, even finding tifa piano was pretty cool or in the first town where you find a auto turret which later shows up to be tifa's limitbreak.
The cities were awesome and were different from each other enough for me to remember each one.
Minigames were awesome as fuck, although the snow maze shit can go to hell.
Characters were okay i really liked the story, it actually felt like progression, you never spent alot of time in the same area instead you kept moving around the whole world. It really feels like a immersive game and i loved every second out of it..... Like running around getting mobs attack me never bothered me.. except in the northern caves where you have that penguin that insta kills u.

The issue here I think is that Ghost in the Shell 'simulated' realism but still was clearly anime. And still kept anime cliches and designs, not putting realism above design.
Advent Children and The Matrix don't know how to balance design and realism. And if ever given a choice, would put realism above everything else. Which causes some rather faceplam worthy complications.
But AC is hardly the first example of that in the Final Fantasy series. You can go as far back as FFIV to see a game trying desperately hard to be anime, but also trying way too hard to be dramatic and 'real'. And not knowing how to balance them.
