> What's the hot show teens are tuning into? Watching a stranger play a video game on the internet.
>This begs the question -- what is so appealing about watching someone else play a video game?
>My wife's son says I just don't "get it." As a lifelong gamer who is obsessed with the industry, I'm baffled why someone would choose to watch a game when they could just play it!
>Twitch is on the forefront with more than 100 million unique viewers every month, with each person watching an average of 106 minutes daily.
>Yet, despite the popularity of these gaming videos, the majority of streamers and game video creators are not that good, so why continue to watch someone who sucks?
>Because, my son says, it is so funny to see people react to how terrible they are, like the viral video of Leeroy Jenkins, who caused his entire raiding party to be wiped out in the game of World of Warcraft.
>"That is why I watch you play Dad!" he says with his newfound teenage sarcasm.

I don't get it. Why is watching others play vidya so popular?
>>

>hurr durr, why do people watch cooking shows instead of just cooking

That's how retarded you sound like right now
>>

For the millionth time it's because kids who don't have any friends watch a let's player and pretend he's their friend

Yes.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
>>
I watch people play vidya irl to see what they'll do compared to what I did. I like watching certain gooks play games because they're amusing and I care more about their comedy than the actual games.

lol. that's gotta be a projection because I would have never landed on this conclusion and don't see how anybody who isn't a loser would.

>As a lifelong gamer who is obsessed with the industry, I'm baffled why someone would choose to watch a game when they could just play it!
It's quite clear that so many people don't actually "get it".
You watch people play the games you already HAVE PLAYED and loved, and the closest you can get to reliving this first-time experience is watching someone else's blind LP.

Why would someone watch LPs of games they HAVEN'T PLAYED themselves, now it's my turn to don't "get it".

its cool to see there reactions and listen to their conversations. like having a virtual friend
>>
>>344274803

When I was in high school, I played on the football team, chased girls, and hanged out with friends.

Now the little fuckers are watching others play video games.

What a horrible turn of events

>>
>>344274803
All of those can be applied to watching e-sports. Wow!
>>
>>344274548
Don't worry anon, most people just browse through shit and it's skewed by the minority who have it playing in the background all day whilst they grind slayer on runescape or fucking whatever.
>>
maybe because it takes less effort than playing a game and you get to actively judge someone else instead of watching yourself be a shitter. It's like the next step in casualization.
>>
>>344274882

Have you ever played sports? You need to assemble a team, find a venue, and get everyone to make it when they're free. It's easiest for basketball and hardest for football. Meanwhile, you can sit at home in your underwear and play.
>>
I don't think I've ever watched a stream on twitch without playing another game on my main screen. It's just there for white noise.
>>
>>344274426
Once it's fully marketized and branded people will fall away from it. Young people hate ads more than they love not playing games.

Every news report on gaming:

Hey parents, what's the hip new thing your kids are into? It's VIDEO GAMES - a new form of digital visual entertainment attracting countless young people every year and it's a BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY.

"Video games have grown up." - idiot from a gaming blog

But some people say video games are teaching violence to kids.

"Video games are violent." - some fat bitch in thick rimmed glasses..

With all these issues plaguing video games will gamers grow up or will it soon be GAME OVER for the industry?

From Washington, this is Gertrude Picklefarmer.
>>
Kids don't socialise outside as much as they used to, everyone can sit at home and communicate with others. So more kids become shut-ins with very little friends, but look, that guy plays video games like I do and he's cool and has lots of friends, brb pewdiepie taking out the trash.
>>
>>344276314
It's like these dumbasses can't add 2 and 2 together. Depending on the game, the kid could go straight from watching his favorite YouTuber play it, to playing himself a different way or with his friends. It's not that different from backyard football.
>>344276896
>being so much of a loser YTrs are imaginary friends and not entertainment.

People have been watching other people play sports and fight for thousands of years. It's not that big of a mystery.

I can learn recipes and new things from a cooking show since its not likely I have all the ingredients at my disposal while with a game I have all the tools I need right there and can learn for myself
>>
>>344277817
A lot of people who watch cooking shows are not watching it so they can learn how to cook.
>>
E-drama, hype, and feeling of belonging. Every competitive e-sports scene I've observed is more into the scene personalities than the actual game. Just like people who watch sports. All they talk make dickride their scene celebrities by making memes and smilies from snapshots. And talk about who's saying this or that to who. Basically, it's an on-going, real-life e-soap opera.

I dare you to find one e-sport scene where people are really into watching some highly skilled unknowns. It's about hype and gossip, and watching people fail/win. Secondarily, it's about fame and money. The actual game comes last. Check Street Fighter V for reference.
>>
>>344274426
Same reason why people prefer to shitpost on a gaming board instead of playing video games
>>
>Kids watch let's plays because they don't have friends
That's a hell of a lot of projection. you telling me the 48 million eleven year olds that subscribe to Pewdiepie don't have real friends? I think more people would be alarmed if that were the case.
>>

It's bizarre. Speaking as someone who has been enjoying streams for the past 7 or 8 years, the shift and way that young people do it these days just confuses and baffles me.

They watch unfunny memers recycle catchphrases on a 30 second delay with a chat that has no interaction, while donations from children flood in and the streamer talks about how wonderful all this money is. It's the complete opposite of why I watch streams, as a way to have a look at a game or have a laugh while dispensing advice along the way in real time. I guess they just want to feel like they're a part of something, and the more viewers, the greater the "community" feels.
>>
Watching some pros in a multiplayer game can be very entertaining. So the same reason people watch sports.

Watching single player games I don't really get. Unless it is just to check out a game, but that takes like 5 minutes.
>>
>>344274489
Does this count as a food analogy.
It's certainly as shit as one.
>>
I've been watching the Cowchop dudes. It's pretty good to see them not give a fuck anymore and just do whatever they feel like.
>>
>why do people watch sports instead of playing sports

twitch is cancer but the motivation behind it is not some sort of impenetrable veil like retards act it's like
>>
>>344274426
If you had friends you would understand. Keep on shitposting you anti social retard
>>
>>344274426
For me I only watch few minutes of theses videos to get an idea of the game before getting it. Though I don't think normal people would ever watch a complete let's play.

Do people just watch vidya get played by others because they're shit at it themselves?
