Let's have a Yakuza thread! Why is Ishin so great?

How is it that Japan can write more masculine characters than American developers?

I'm really into the franchise lately. Beat Yakuza 1 and 2 HD collection and the PSP spin-off Kurohyou. Now I'm playing Ryo Ga Gotoku Kenzan and Kurohyou 2.

It's a real shame none of the spin-offs were localized because these games kick ass. After I beat both it's on to Yakuza 3 which I hope is good.
>>
>>344269084
Honestly, Y3 is a little weaker than most of the games, but it's not awful. Yakuza 4 and 5 are great though. The use of multiple protagonists in those games works well.

Also, try Yakuza Ishin with the English guide, it's a great game.
>>
>>344269180
Don't really need a guide but yeah. I was thinking of saving it for when I get a PS4 or something.

Is Ishin not related to Kenzan? Seems like it has different characters.
>>
How much chapters does Yakuza 2 have?
>>
>>344270176
You speak Japanese? If wait for the PS4 if I were you. There's a fully fledged remake of Yakuza 1 on the PS3/4 as well which adds new scenes and the prequel, Yakuza 0 available on those two as well.

Yeah, they're not related. Ishin is about the Shinsengumi and stuff.
>>
>>344268910
Because they don't stigmatize male behavior the same way the West does.
You see them go through things, express emotions, and preform actions with a more nuanced logic; as opposed to ME MAN, ME KILL AND EXPLODE, NOW MUST FIND SEXY WOMANS TO BECOME EUPHORIC.
Dank memes aside, it's a gross over generalization of the issue.

>>344268483
Haven't tried Ishin. Got the Platinum for Yakuza 4, but kinda dropped 5 after I completed the story because I just didn't have the time to Plat it. I'm gonna go back and do it eventually. Probably before I get Zero/the remake.
>>
>>344271591
Any tips for platinuming Yakuza 4? What should I do to be successful on higher difficulties? Also, use a guide for certain Y5 trophies, if you get certain items as Haruka, you can't get certain trophies.

I hate to say it, but I don't remember much about platnuming 4. It was a while ago.
What I do remember is mostly just because of the way I play vidya in general.
Indomitable was a cinch because I never use continues, and always play normal modes through until the end, where I either restart on hard, or newgame+ into hard.

Picking a specific character had advantages, too. I usually played as Akiyama for fights because he was the man. But anyone will work as long as you get to know how to use them well. Saejima is a beast once leveled a little and you figure out how to chain his combos.

Use a guide for Pachinko, and Mahjong/Shogi if you don't know how to play them.

Before you go for extra-hard, try to complete the ultimate skills challenges; they'll help you learn the character's strengths and weaknesses, plus get you shit.

Uh...
Go after Amon and the substories on Easy/Normal, since difficulty doesn't play a part in it, and that mission is a cheating bitch on extra-hard.

That's pretty much all I remember besides all the collecting. OH, speaking of which, Pronto has a day menu, and a night menu. Gambling is your friend, and learn when using weapons is useful or not worth it.

Good luck, man!
>>
>>344272841
Thanks anon! I've done norm mode and up to the Amon Brothers now. I'll finish that before I do the other difficulties. Do the trophies for difficulties stack?

Think I remember you from here before. I can't help, but good luck. Lots of respect.
>>

I'm in most Yakuza threads on /v/
>>
>>344273050
Call me when you plan on translating Kurohyou and I'll lend a hand.
>>
>>344273236
Me too, anon. It's weird when you think that we probably discuss the series with the same group of people on here.
>>
>>344273402
Black Panther 1 is already being translated by a different group.

https://gbatemp.net/threads/kurohy%C5%8D-ry%C5%AB-ga-gotoku-shinsh%C5%8D-yakuza-black-panther-translation-project.371411/

I'd rather you helped us.
>>
>>344273605
I would, but I haven't played Yazkua 3 and I'd rather have full context of everything.

Do you have any ripped scripts in a pastebin or something?
>>
>>344273043
I don't think so.
>>
>>344273692
Pastebin no, but we have a website set up where you basically log in and have access to the scripts line-by-line in specific window boxes on the left and on the right you've got empty boxes where you input the translation. It's set up in a quite painless way. I'm not the project lead so I couldn't give you access right now even if I wanted to, but if you ever want to help you can contact us on romhacking.
>>
>>344273920
I'll look into it later, but no promises.

I always felt like I should give translation work a try but even though my Japanese is good, translating is a whole different type of skill. If someone is going over the lines to edit them and make them sound more natural it'd be ideal.

It's pretty sad how much content was cut.
>>
>>344274197
We do have an editor, we just require extra translators as currently we have only 1 and he's still tied up in his previous project that should be done soon so he can move on to this fully.
>>
>>344274197
Any advice for learning Japanese?
>>
>>344274446
Alright, I'll look into it later.

>>344274769

Can anyone tell me if it's worth playing Kenzan with an English guide? I know it'll probably never be translated, I just don't know if it'll be too bothersome to be constantly referring to a guide while playing.
>>
>>344275846
>I know it'll probably never be translated
About that....

http://yakuzapatch.tumblr.com/
>>
>>344275909
Damn, that's amazing. I'm glad somebody's working on it... but I doubt I'd be able to hack my Ps3 to install the patch, whenever it does get finished.
>>
>>344275320
I downloaded Genki 1/2. Is it a good idea to read both of those through first?
>>
>>344276056
Start by learning kanas first. It shouldn't take you more than a week to memorize them.
>>
>>344276103
Alright, I'll do that.

I have to ask though, how long did it take you to get good with Japanese anyway?
>>
>>344276175
I'm not the nip guy. :^)
>>
I'm playing 5 and it's my first yakuza game and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. Hella fun though
>>
>>344276317
>and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right.
You ain't.

You really should've started with 1 or at the very least 4.
4 is where the focus changes from Kiryu to an ensemble cast and 4 also features lengthy video recaps of 1-3.
>>
>>344276317
>having fun
You're doing something right.
>>
>>344276317
If you're having fun, then you're doing it right. Seeing as it's your first Yakuza game, do substories and check out the random attractions in each city as well. Substories are a fun way to level up and they're one of the funniest parts of Yakuza. You should check out the older games too.

Since we never got Kenzan, the jump from Y2 to Y3 blows people's minds. Seamless city, better graphics(which don't look as great now but back then they were good), 50+ new heat actions, and the new minigames was a huge upgrade

>>344270836
16, though you have 2 or 3 where you don't really do much, like the one where you propose the peace treaty and things go wrong
>>
>>344277795
Ishin was kind of the same case. That came before 0 and was a massive leap forward in many ways, at least on the PS4 version. It's amazing when you compare Kiwami and 1 together too.

>tfw that even though i'm glad we're getting 0, i still really want Kiwami and it's probably not happening
>>
>>344278256
If you can get a PS3 cheap, you can play every current game, although some aren't in English. 3-5 and Dead Souls are though.
>>
>>344278354
Well 5 probably went well enough, so if 0 does, we could get Kiwami. They at least have a basic translation already available for it.
>>
>>344278354
The problem with Kiwami is that by the time they're done translating it they could've translated 6 instead. Well that and because the cost of translating may not be worth it even though the game is maybe 60% reused assets
>>
>>344278359
Still I'd kill for a 60fps@4k version of Yakuzas.
>>
> Oh you don't want our shitty zombie game with garbage gunplay mechanics in a brawler?
> Well i guess that means you'd never buy this cool samurai game with great gameplay and an interesting setting then...

SEGAAAAA!!!!
>>
>>344278615
It's sad that we'll miss out on Kiwami, 6 or both, unless 0 goes really well.

>>344278626
I wonder how the series would fare on PC.
>>
>>344278808
Ishin probably could have gone well if it was released during one of the early PS4 game droughts.
>>
>>344278992

Definitely. Also i can't remember the last Samurai themed game that wasn't a fucking Musou (not that i don't love Musous).

Way of the Samurai 4 i guess and that was 5 years ago at this point.
>>

was called that?
the one you needed to finish pretty much without saving? yea that , way of the samurai , well 2 was the last one i remember

On 7/26 they will show new gameplay and give release date so hopefully they fixed all the problems the Y6 demo had
>>
>>344275421
I was surprised to hear someone is working on Kurohyou. And let me warn you again but I don't really know anything about translating as is so my translation are going to need editing.

>>344275686
Sure, once I get to my computer I'll add you. Still, no promises I just want to take a look at the script first.

>>344276056
Genki isn't so good. First you need to learn the Kanas, I recommend using Memrise for this part. For starting grammar Namasensei has some very useful videos for beginning and the rest is Tae Kim.

As for Kanji, there's a lot of approaches so I suggest asking /djt/.

>>344277795
Playing Kenzan now and I'm honestly pretty amazed at the graphics.
>>
>>344282962
Like I said before, editing is not a problem since we'd need to edit it anyway to do proper line breaks and so on. But before any of that can be done, the text has to be bloody translated.

Also if Kenzan amazes you, wait until you get to Yakuza 5 which has new renderer (Kenzan, 3, 4 and Dead Souls use the same one).
Y5's renderer is also used in 0, Kiwami and Ishin.
