Worth?

I want /v/'s opinion on if I should buy one of these. I have the hardware to run it. I have a decently large area to play it in.

I don't think the game library currently justifies the purchase. They also haven't figured out room scale locomotion in a convincing way, which leads to a lot of immersion breaking workarounds like shooting to where you want to teleport.

On the other hand, if you're a social fuckin' dude and always have people over, it's definitely worth it. Seeing people freak out in VR for the first time never, ever gets old.
>>
>>344255330
I have a few friends who would really enjoy playing it. Pretty sure i'd have to hide it from my mom though cause she doesn't like me spending money on vidya shit. The most concerning part for me is the lack of worthwhile content.
>>
>>344255479

shit nigga let your mom play that shit. remember what a big deal the Wii was when it first came out, and everyone was doing wii bowling all the time? VR is the wii times a thousand.
>>
I'm hesitant due to the price but otherwise would buy one immediately for audio shield alone.
>>
>>344255479
>>344255570

You should let you're mom play this.
I invited my mom over to my house where I demo'd it to her (she's 63 now) and she actually enjoyed the hell out of it.

The price tag though made her wince a bit.
>>
>>344255570
You're right she might get a kick out of it. I let her try my google cardboard once and she was like "meh". Probably cause cardboard is boring af anyways.

>>

not really, its the nogames headset
plus have you seen its fanbase? its almost entirely leddit
pic related is its currentl flavour of the month game its fucking terrible
if you must get vr just get an oculus, its cheaper and looks better and it has more actual games and its motion controllers look better if you are into that

I don't deny that there's no 'game' per se. I use it for War Thunder and Project cars.
>>

yeah Battle Dome looks like the most cancerous shit i've ever seen.

But the oculus scares me. It's like some kind of Facebook face-sucker. No controllers (yet). Plus it uses Oculus Home which is some weird shit. Is it compatible with SteamVR or whatever the Vive uses?

Well, that depends. Are you okay with most of your experiences being early tech demos? Are you okay with most games being relatively shallow? Are you okay with tweaking and fiddling with software to get 3rd party stuff to work (e.g. Metroid Prime in VR on Dolphin)?

If the answers to these questions are yes, then go for it.

There's plenty of upcoming games (killing floor, serious sam, raw data, star trek, eagle flight) but there's not much software that doesn't rely on the tech being novel.

If the concept of VR is awesome to you, and you've watched videos of gameplay and stuff, I'd say you're gonna be okay, so long as you're not breaking the bank for it.
>>
>>344255168
>I want /v/'s opinion on if I should buy one of these. I have the hardware to run it. I have a decently large area to play it in.

you may have the space, hardware and money to buy one but whats the point when there are hardly any games for it.

unless you dont mind just buying tech demos what will never be nothing more than just tech demos.

>>
>>344257684
I think the price will drop. I am not expecting it to hit $300, but $500 is definitely possible. PSVR for one is actually $500 if you get the bundle with the camera and the controllers, $50 extra for that mandatory camera alone.
>>
>>344255168

No way I can wholeheartedly recommend it to buy mostly for these reasons
>>344255330

but Everyone should get the chance to at least try it. If there's a friend or demo event by all means go for it. Haven't tried Rift but I just can't imagine not having roomscale.
>>
>>344255168
I want one but just don't have the money. When the fuck is this shit gonna be affordable?
>>
psvr = $500, no sex games, no future innovation, shitty controllers, bad performance/graphics. pros are?

oculus = $600 + unreleased(and uncomfortable) controllers, need tons of usb plugins, facebook spies on you, cancerous exclusives.

vive = $800, easy to use, has at least some innovation.

overall vive is the best offering if you want to play games and show people vr games since it has some fun ones and will get more. oculus is an inferior platform on pc and psvr isn't even proven to work well.

this is hardware aside mind you, because that doesn't matter that much.
>>
Honestly wait till the next versions of the headsets. Great as the 3d is there are still some real drawbacks to be fixed. Very low resolution, limited peripheral vision, glare with strong light contrasts (like a street lamp at night).
>>

>>
>>344258324
sorry man. alcohol brings out the leddit in me
>>
>>344258338
you mean resolution not graphics. psvr has the same display resolution but some games will be rendering below 1080p. and on vive/oculus you can at least downsample which removes the aliasing which makes games look orders of magnitude better. i've only tried the dk1 but downsampling on that was just fantastic.

a lot of people complain about the screen door effect and it is an issue but it's not something that should stop you from getting into vr. i mean if you really want to wait several years for a new headset to come out that's being severely picky, like skipping the 1080p tv 'fad' because 4k would eventually come out. like what.
>>
>>344258542
>psvr has the same display resolution
it's lower.
>>
>>344258187
>psvr = $500, no sex games, no future innovation, shitty controllers, bad performance/graphics. pros are?
Being the cheapest is definitely a pro. And from people who tried them, they were apparently the most comfortable to wear of the three.
I am expecting a PSVR2 when PS5 comes out anyway, but that is still a few years away. Yes, it is true you don't get porn, but Sony apparently.is making sure that there will be a variety of games on it as it is. If you want to game with it then PSVR is probably the most sensible option for now, and you would only pick either of the PC options for the pornography.

2nd Gen would be when all bets are off. But for now PSVR, especially for existing PS4 owners, seem to be the most affordable choice for what you are paying.
>>
>>344258950
2nd gen will still be something you can complain about especially the console version. and being cheap plus having expensive games(tech demos, really) isn't really a pro.

plus vr is best when you have good controllers and vive is the only one that offers that. and no matter what, pc vr will always have the most games even outside of porn.
>>

Are you American? You could try booking for a demo with any of the headsets these days, depending on where you live. Always nice to try before making a decision.
>>
>>344259380
Yes. I live in NC. The only VR experience I can find in my area is Best Buy sets up a PSVR demo on the weekends. I want to try a Vive so damn bad though. If I could just try one out that'd help me make my decision so much easier.

lolfuckingwhat nigger? i tried this shit at CES and the occulus kicks the vives ass at controllers

the wii nunchuck is symmetrical, ambidextrous, if you hold 2 nunchucks its like the vive, 2 of the same thing in 2 different hands, rift actually has left and right grips

the shape objectively gives you hand cramps and oculus controllers have less buttons and worse tracking than vive's.

That's out of date and no longer applies since they stopped blocking accessibility. Facebook is cancer and Rift is late to room scale as well as touch controllers but the hardware is solid. The interface for their platform is also better and so are some of the "exclusives".

Moe basic compared to what? Air?
We have no idea when Touch is coming out, and even if it is coming out we don't know if it would be delayed, or if it would be any good.

If you want to wait, then wait until 2nd gen. If you don't want to wait until 2nd gen, then right now Vive is the only full experience in town, with PSVR coming next. Rift's Touch is a promise, but a promise isn't a product. They would have to ship it first.

Not true. Japanese porn game makers are already there to integrate VR to existing titles and to design their next titles with VR front and center.

Then again, most dudebros don't consider those or sim games as 'games'.

I own both Vive and Oculus, Oculus is much better hardware in both optics and general fit and finish. Oculus seems to have better lenses as far as I can tell since they should be similar resolution. Oculus tracking also seem steadier if far more limited. That may be impacted by my setup though. Vive sensors seem very sensitive to reflectivity.

Room scale is very cool, it's absolutely the thing to wow your friends with. But basically nothing worthwhile uses it. All the good VR stuff (Elite, P:Cars, real games via a VR injector like Vorpx) is seated.

I'd recommend people just wait. But if you really want one now I'd say Oculus. Particularly if you're looking to use it for stuff like Skyrim in VR or whatever. Vive is still great hardware though. The differences I see are mostly stuff that comes from side by side comparison. Given that both are open again I don't thing either is a terrible choice.

I didn't say it is a bad thing, I only make it clear that it is a LIE that Touch was ever a deciding factor for anything. Whatever that uses Touch would try to make it work for Vive wands too. how to you point your index finger out to press buttons with a vive wand that cant tell what your finger is doing?
touch is literally the difference between having your hands in a game and having a pair of floating wands in the game, i know which one is more immersive

i cant think of any dev that would willingly use the wands knowing full well they serve as a constant anti-immersion reminder that you are still playing a game holding wands and not actually using your hands in the virtual world

Maybe? I have SLI 980 Ti's so it hasn't really been a concern for me. That said, you actually run in 1280x1024 due to the resolution of the headsets so I suspect the extra overhead really isn't bad. Basically like running in 1440p.

Adrift made me queasy when moving laterally while spinning the viewpoint. New Vegas and Skyrim have been absolutely no issue however. I'm actually a little frustrated how down devs are on standard character movement considering how well the headtracking+mouse movement works in those games.

japan barely knows htc and vive exist, they literally have festivals dedicated to oculus hentai already
>>
I really want a Vive but there is currently no way to buy one in Hueland without paying 2x the original price. And to be honest, if I could get one for at least a week I would have enough fun before regretting the purchase.

>I own a GT 220 and let me tell you about why VR is bad

You can get a GPU that can handle VR games for like 200 bucks.

Got a lot of money to waste away for a gimmick and not be financially affected? Get it. It's what i would do if i had the money because i want to play some games with modded in VR
>>
>>344265673
I wouldn't go min spec for VR. But a 1070 will crush all current VR stuff no sweat.
>>
>>344265673
The current resolutions are a joke, and even if you were dumb enough to upgrade right now despite there not being a single reason to, you're still going to have to go it for the next step up in headsets.

If you think you can live with 1080p cancer, wait 5 years and pick one up from a bargain bin for a dollar.

>You think it's worth buying VorpX now?
If you already have a headset? Yes.
>>
Mine has been sitting in a box for a over month because I'd rather play overwatch than strap that sweaty thing to my face
>>
>>344255168
Are you a VR enthusiast? If yes, then buy it.

If you only want it for games, then no. Not yet at least.
>>
>>344265773
For twice the price, yes. And a 1080 crushes a 1070, what point are you trying to make, higher price = higher performance?
>>
>>344265876
No. That buying a card for the current minimum VR spec isn't a great idea.
>>
>>344265857
>tfw I'm in the same situation, but don't even have time for Overwatch due to too much IRL

Just tell her it's a masturbatory aid and ask her ifbshe wants to use it.

>>344265958
Meh, my RX 480 works fine atm. I'll buy an actual flagship card when I own a 1440p 144Hz monitor, so not right now since they're stupidly expensive.

I've had mine for two weeks now, there aren't a lot of games with actual content. Elite Dangerous has very good VR implementation but the game itself is a shitty grind simulator. There are some racing games if you're into that. Minecraft is pretty fun. Plus dozens of shovelware titles that are massively overpriced. I've had some fun playing audioshield.

I wouldn't buy it for the games right now and it doesn't look like there are actual games coming out until next year.

But the porn and porn games are absolutely amazing. I use my vive for multiple hours every day just for that. Had some of my best orgasms in VR.

One strongly recommended VR game it seems is Battlezone. But it is a PSVR timed exclusive.

Cuckulus doesn't do room scale, how can you play all the Vive games without that feature?

but it does tho

Before you buy:
http://vr.mkeblx.net/oculus-sim/
Click CV1

That's what the Vive/Oculus looks like.

Not this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjE6qXd6Itw

Every game you play, every application you run, it will look like you're viewing through a screen door with motion blur, with weird lens glare from the imperfect lens itself.

Everything that requires reading, you will have to get close to read. It will not look like the above video with crisp perfect text. It will look like a blurry mess.

This is the hard truth I learned after buying and returning my Vive. That, and you will never have enough room in your playspace to truly feel immersed. Not without sinking another $1000 into a treadmill.
>>
>>344267975
I actually had the Vive on for two hours, it's nothing like that at all.
>>
>>344267906
looks more like stand in one spot scale

>screen door
Yup. About right.

>with motion blur,
No. Turn on low persistance, Consumer models don't have motion blur problems.

>with weird lens glare
I've only noticed this on Vive. Oculus has much better lenses.

Also that's capped at 62 fps. Vive and Oculus both target 90.
