I've yet to see ANYTHING good about this game.
I've been a die hard FF fan since I was a little kid. Even the Lightning saga didn't deter me from blind worship of this series. (I actually enjoyed the XIII games.) But ever since this was announced as XV, I have had little to no hype. I wasn't interested when they first showed it as Versus XIII. I played the Episode Duscae demo and, while it was intriguing, it was extremely unpolished, clunky, and had very poorly designed combat. I understand it wad a demo and not the final product, but it doesn't look like it's going to get much better. I've been holding out for info about FFXVI since they branded this as XV. Bring on something that isn't over 10 fucking years old.

Most “theories” and “fan speculations” are downright embarrassing, since most people who are (currently) attracted to the game are Anime otaku fans, so most of it bounds to anime tropes with a bit of “ edgy Game of Thrones-y xD”. I agree, the game deserves much better, so I would advise you to come back after a week when the game is out so you could actually have a great discussion with all of /v/. It's called Final Fantasy because the first game was a last ditch effort while they were going bankrupt. It ended up being a huge hit and spawning a shitton of "sequels" and spinoffs.
Each game has a completely separate story, characters, and even slightly different(and sometimes wildly different) mechanics.
The reason they're all called Final Fantasy is because of name recognition and also they share certain themes and recurring lore(i.e. there's a character named "Cid" in every game who's generally some sort of mechanic/engineer)
The "golden age" generally refers to the PSone titles: 7 through 9. The tenth one also used to be held in pretty high regard but revisionist anti-linearity fags are starting to meme that it's shit these days. Also there's retro-hipsters who claim that the early SNES(or god forbid NES) games are actually the best.
Basically the fanbase is fractured as fuck and fans of one game are constantly attacking fans of another, etc. etc.

Thanks for the read anon. I kinda figured it was all a giant clusterfuck of different games under the same name. I think I saw a movie set in the FF world once as a kid, but I genuinely don't remember if there was a coherent plot, just that it had pretty visuals.
So my understanding is that JRPGs are not choose-your-own adventure like western rpgs. You roleplay as a specific character and follow the script, even if there's an open world and you can pick your weapons and shit.

Actually the 2015 one is a WIP unfinished version shown at a Makings of behind the scenes panel with SEs CGI animators, its actually older than the previous one which is actually from 2013 and is the finalised CGI FMV as it will be in the final game. The other two are just ingame versions of that area.

While this is sort of true(especially from an outsider perspective), there is a certain, hard-to-explain "FF-ness" to most of the titles. Even the maligned XIII was pretty close to the look and feel of a Final Fantasy, though it didn't deliver in terms of story and gameplay.
Part of the reason XV is constantly shit on is because it started off as a spinoff called Versus XIII. The original concept for that game was darker and more edgy/anime-esque than what you see in the current promotional material. Around the time VsXIII was supposed to enter production, fallout from XIII and the failed launch of the MMO XIV placed the game in development hell. That's also why you see all the >TEN YEARS throughout this thread.
VsXIII was supposed to have been cancelled, but due to strong fan support they decided to retool the game into XV. The result is something which is neither "classic" FF nor the re-imagining Versus XIII was supposed to be. I personally was never looking forward to Versus(not my cup of tea), but the new direction with XV isn't exactly stellar, either. I honestly wish they HAD just cancelled it and moved on to something better. Nevertheless, it does seem like they're putting an honest effort into this game.
