Fates is the only game that sold well and that's because Awakening and Smash made it popular. #FE bombed, Xenoblade X sold mediocre, Fatal Frame bombed.
The problem with JRPGs is that the audience for them is very small now. Back in the day if you wanted to play something a big epic story you had to play a CRPG but those weren't very user friendly, their presentations were frankly lacking, and they were on computers. JRPGs gave players all the story-rich experience of CRPGs with simple to understand mechanics and absolutely amazing presentation (for the time). But today everything is story-rich, everything is epic, everything has great presentation, and everything is casualized. The only thing JRPGs have are their anime look and very distinct Japanese (awkward as hell unless the translators basically rewrite the whole game) writing. People who play JRPGs now are usually people who like those two things. Of course not all JRPGs are the same but most companies have to bank on those unique characteristics and pander to a relatively small number of people.
