Yeah. I just spent 4 hours outside, with water bottles and shit. I was really excited and I actually had a blast when I didn't find a common pokemon for the millionth time.
But when I got home after being tired, sweaty, and not much reward for my efforts I started to think about if what I did was a waste of time. Sure I went outside but REALLY how much did I actually spend not looking at my phone and trying to get in touch with nature?
In the end you catch the same pokemon, so there's no real connection to what you run into, you grind to level up and evolve, and sometimes it just feels cheep when you walk around aimlessly just to have the rare nearby pokemon vanish from the nearby list.
I want to try again but I'm afraid I'm wasting my time. Which is a shame because it was something that made me go outside and distract me from working out and it has a lot of potential.

I cannot echo OP's sentiment enough. I was a diehard pokemon fan my entire life, dropped the series when they went to 3DS though. The first day i was ecstatic and overwhelmed with nostalgic bliss. Today I got around to the gyms I'd claimed, and am met with the combat system. i realize just how little there is and the only thing ahead of me is more pointless pokemon catching...without any actualy pokemon combat or even player vs player combat of any kind.....

I'd really like to have a proper battle system, but they won't do it. It'll take away from their handheld market too much. That and the time it would take to battle a pokémon before catching it would take too long. I believe the idea for the app was a quick mini game, which you grind to hell and back to level, rather than grinding battles with randoms.
That being said the gym battles could be a bit more in depth. Different moves to chose, or hell just the standard battle system from the handheld versions. Maybe even a list of moves that your pokémons ai could use after you drop it off at the gym

Ingress pulls its portals from the community. Take a photo, upload the GPS coordinates, write a description, and they'll approve it within a few months.
They'll take almost anything.
I got five fucking signs from the same park right next to my house. Signs. Not even statues(which I also submitted).
Then you submit a church, then you get the statues around the church because every place got a statue of Jesus or Mary somewhere.
And PokeGo took the portals from Ingress and made gyms and PokeStops.
So if there are portals in a rural, not heavily populated area, it's probably because there's a lone Ingress player or two submitting them.

You don't need to stop, you just need to not be going more than 20 or so MPH so the game won't speedlock you, which in this case mostly means that if you fail to capture a Pokemon on the first try it'll run away.
And all that really is, is a safeguard to discourage people from driving and playing the game at the same time.

I haven't followed this game's release at all but I remember hearing about it back whenever it was announced. I thought it was cool at first but soon figured that pokemon would be distributed randomly with no rhyme or reason. Which makes sense but they totally missed out on a great opportunity even if it means people would end up getting hurt.

As far as I remember from the beta, like I said, the net cost was the same, so it didn't really matter if you picked powering a single pidgey to evolve, or evolving a single pidgey then farming pidgeys to power up its evolved form.
So odds are, down the line, maybe even in weeks, they'll balance it out so neither is really more efficient than the other.
It really depends on how you want to play exactly. Are you gonna be aggressively commandeering a multitude of gyms? Because you'll lose access to the Pokemon you've stationed there until they're defeated by someone else.
